Fao Hiroshima
The Art of Japanese life. Starts off with the bombing of Hiroshima.and then gets better.its three episodes 1st being on bbc4 last night.the whole programme was for me pretty amazing so I won't spoil it.The story of Edo now Tokyo and the photographer residing in a little conclave? buildings of early last century sandwiched between the skyscrapers of modern Tokyo.was pretty impressive as were the thirty or so bars.when watching you just wanted to be there..but of course YOU are.

Re: Fao Hiroshima
Thanks very much. I will attempt to check it out. It can`t really get any worse than the bombing of Hiroshima!!!!!! Most Japanese people I converse with always state how `close` they feel to the British people, with our long histories, island mentality, etc. Like any country it has its dark underbelly but in general, a fantastic place to be. If only it had the Lake District, Yorkshire tea and pie shops!!!!

Don't know much about Japanese cultures and history but what I saw of the programme and it's fact finding was enlightening, like a lot of people in the west I would have a blinkered view on japan.the cruelty that went on etc.the programme shows the other side of the coin.

We went to Japan a couple of years ago, best place we've ever been. Like an advanced civilisation. Shame it's on t'other side of the world, or we'd be back more often! And yes, those BBC4 programmes were very interesting.

In many ways the architects of their own downfall. Strong but overly-confident military, easily controlled populace and a weak Emperor. Many Japanese do still believe they are victims though and it is no wonder as they still have strongly nationalistic school textbooks regards their history. Nanking never happened for some.
John Doe on the street, or Masayuki Suzuki, is a thoroughly polite, highly conservative chap and wouldn`t say boo to a goose until authority tells him to.

Re: Fao Hiroshima
Not much about the destruction and oppression of Asia by Japan and the relationship of Zen Buddhism to that, plus the way it was filmed it's made out that Japan was either an innocent party in WW2 or that we were equally culpable for what happened.
Incidentally, my dad brought back a flattened milk bottle from Hiroshima 3 months after the bomb. No wonder my hair fell out and my mental health isn't the best. Those servicemen campaigned for some compensation because they were never told about radiation, I mean can you imagine bringing that object back to Burnley with the milk encapsulated inside?

Incidentally we thought we'd won the war, but it was a battle. We dropped the bomb, they used subtle perfidy, because you can always screw the considerate man in his act of consideration via words.
With their anti-sex plan, the West would die out completely in 30 years. Buddha, Krishna, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, free-love and contraception (but not in their communities.)
Preaching against the material world, but where the yogis demand YOUR goods (Be Here now.) Preaching against sex as 'desire and grasping'-as-critique (Buddhism and Hinduism) the promotion of homosexuality via My Sweet Lord and George Harrison, LGBGT and Feminism, the sexual confusion-as-political mandate of guru-yoga-spiritual master-teacher- culture, the falling birth rate of the whites and the open door policy to Asians to come and **** because our boys aren't (we need youth.)
How the West was won and the destruction of the white man via Zen.
Oh yeah Samye Ling up in Scotalnd where they aim (no joke) TO TAME WESTERN MAN, to 'disciplin' his mind and 'When you are ready, a teacher will appear' (no patronization and condescension there then.)

Don't leave your DNA anywhere because in fifty years time you'll awake to find you're a flesh doughnut cushion in a robot sushi bar.

Re: Fao Hiroshima
If you are anywhere near Hiroshima, let`s meet up! Claretandblue1989 was over here in January, we met up and had a great day. A quality chap to boot!!! You`re coming at a great time too! It`s hanami (cherry blossom viewing) time and one of the rare occasions the Japanese en masse let their hair down. It`s fun but also very beautiful!PWBFC wrote:Off to Japan in three weeks. Re: Fao Hiroshima
Haven't explored much of Japan (would like to one day) but have been to Tokyo. We went during the summer (very hot and humid!) for 10 days and it was just brilliant. Just such a vast city that you could easily spend weeks there and still have loads to do - bit like NYC in that respect. We found that it wasn't as expensive as people made out - just got to know where to look when it comes to dining out etc. People were very friendly and went out of their way to help us find places when we were lost etc. Great experience!

Re: Fao Hiroshima
It is a wonderful country to explore and you will be made to feel incredibly welcome. EXPENSIVE though but so is the UK as a tourist. Both have such histories but the UK is ahead regards nature (in my opinion). Ah...the Lake District!

Hiroshima
I will be in town for a couple of days this week. If you are around let me know
