Matches you should have attended but missed

Post by tiger76 » Sun Jun 17, 2018 6:52 pm

As it says on the tin any tales of woe about how you missed games be it through illness, transport issues or any other reasons.

To broaden this thread it doesn't have to just be Clarets matches.

I remember my uncle was supposed to take me to Anfield in the late 1980's,Liverpool-Sheffield Wednesday fixture but he never turned up as promised, cue a very :( 12 year old.

The saving grace is that i wasn't converted to the dark side, unlike many others back then.

Northampton away in the '92 promotion season. Only an hour up the road, the season building to a climax and I "had to" go to a wedding. Can't even remember who's now but remember being in a foul mood about it. I hate going to wedding s at the best of times but this...!!! Missed an epic win and I'm still irritated.

How about a semi final and final, both at Wembley, 1966. Had tickets for both - went to neither.

Should have gone to WHL for the Milk Cup game that we won 4-1. Drivers wife was taken to hospital that afternoon!

Burnley 5 - 2 Stockport (Barnes x5)

I got dragged off the bus on the way to the ground, as I was already grounded! A really bad week that was!

I didn't go to this game because I was so annoyed at the sacking of Brian Miller on that day. I listened to it in amazement on the radio though!

Scunthorpe away FA Cup 1989. Arrived late at the ground, 12 strong in a Ford Transit. Police surrounded us, saw the amount of empty and full cans of ale and escorted us out of town.

York away 1992 which was postponed due to the tragic death of Ben Lee.

Man U v Arsenal around 1990, the game where there was a huge brawl on the pitch. Turned up an hour before kick off to find all cash turnstiles closed as it was full, tickets only. Ended up at Bury v Reading.

They came in their thousands........but I wasn’t one of them! Couldn’t walk with knee trouble. Sorted out by Mike Pettigrew the then Blackburn physio. He used to tell me it was Alan Shearer in the daytime and me in the evening.

I always regret missing games but this one I can recall I don't regret quite so much.

The 1998 FA Cup tie against Darlington at Middlesbrough. Was planning to go but was knocked back with flu and there was no chance of me going. I missed the last ten minute debacle.

I hate the 'shows how far we've come' phrase but the team that night was: Frank Petter Kval, Chris Brass, Chris Scott, Matt Heywood, Brian Reid, Steve Morgan, Glen Little, Mark Ford, Rune Vindheim, Phil Eastwood, Andy Payton. Subs: Craig Mawson, Michael Devenney, Brad Maylett, Colin Carr-Lawton, Kevin Henderson.

Remember listening to this on the radio. Sure payton was sent off and have memories of thinking I know whats coming here. And they bagged three late on.

As if Payton and Little played in that side. Padiham wouldve beat us never mind Darlo.

Payts sent off at 2-0. I listened on the radio and you could sense what was coming - goals timed at 81,87.90.

The Orient game - I just couldn't stomach it - worked at an exhibition in Scarborough instead. My colleagues predicted Scarborough would be a more successful club than Burnley - how wrong could they be..

I missed the last 3 matches at Ewood because of the ridiculous pantomime from the local police state on previous visits. Part of me regrets not going because I missed the wins but a major part of me will never allow myself to be put in a position where I can be treated like a potential criminal for attending a local football match.

I also missed the Orient game, having regularly attended all other home matches, including attendances below 2,000 at Turf Moor. I had to go to a massive family event but sneaked out to my car to listen to the radio commentary of the last 10 minutes. I staggered back into the event and said something like "Burnley won. We're staying up" and the other family members just carried on talking about other things, unaware of the importance of what had just happened.

Was it Luton where Spicer went in goal and we scored 3 goals. Gutted, missed that, can't even remember why but I'd planned to go and it fell right in the middle of a period when I was living in London and hadn't seen us score in any match I'd been too since Stan's reign.

Oh and the friendly against Shamrock Rovers. I bought the tickets online but missed the game because it took Dooley's car hire at Dublin Airport an hour and 45 minutes to sort us out with a car! By the time we got in the car I realised we'd arrive at the ground with less than 30 minutes of the second half to go and there was little chance of us getting in the ground at that time.

Plymouth playoff semi final away, I of “little faith” didn’t try hard enough to move a meeting, I had in my diary for the Wednesday.
Regretted it ever since.
Spent the evening in my kitchen in Harrogate trying to listen to radio Lancashire, the reception got worse and worse. By the end was only picking up every third word. In the pre Internet, mobile world, took at least another 15 minutes to get the result.
Must have woke up all our road, when I did !
Happy days :D

Bournemouth v Burnley 0-0 1997 I think. Colne Clarets ran an overnight trip, with possibly sky/bbc covering the coach trip as part of a football edition.

I begged my mother to let me go, wrote post it notes everywhere in house saying “please”; cupboards, inside her book, work bag you name it. I recorded a tape begging to go which I played outside her door early every morning on a cassette player.

She would not let her 12 year old go on his own...not spoke to her since.

Brazil v Ghana 2006. Watched it on tv at the campsite in Munich and after the game found out we had tickets for it so should have been in Dortmund.

Safe to say the beer got hammered that night so I could forget about it as I was gutted.

The Watford FA Cup Quarter Final. At the time, we rarely troubled the FA draw beyond the 4th round, so I booked my stag weekend in Newcastle. Typically we then get to the Quarter Final and it is away at one of the closest grounds to where I live. After what happened, I think I made the right call being at the opposite end of the country.

Also I was going to go to the 2009 League Cup semi v Spurs with J50. After the hammering we took at WHL and the problems with getting time off work, I decided there was no way we could overhaul a 3 goal deficit, so I could make do with watching us crash out on TV. How close we came.....

Payton tackled the goalie, the fat git thought about it then took a dive, ref couldn't of seen it cause of the fog the sent him off . Ludicrous decision, have a feeling it was Bobby mimms.

I missed the game when we signed Ian Wright, turned up and the ground was full, decided to get a season ticket after that game.

Ewood away when we finally beat the b'turds. Watched the game in a pub down town and after nearly getting drowned in cheap lager when Ings popped the winner in, it just felt like years of pain had been lifted in an instant, it was an amazing feeling. Just wish I could've been inside Ewood to ram it down their f'kin snivelling throats.

I think it was a home game against Barnsley when “Gifted” came on whilst we were losing.......scored a hat trick and we went on to win.....Jimmymaccer Junior went that night with his mum ‘cos I was away with work......couldn’t believe it as he texted me saying Gifted was on, then texts as he scored......

And I missed it!

Not should, but would’ve if I could. Every game of the last 8 seasons, apart from the 3 games I made it to.

CT, I wish I’d missed that game at Middlesbrough.

No real tale of woe - but i missed Stoke at home in the 09/10 PL season due to it being postponed. I have started missing Ireland matches out of choice now and do not regret a thing.
