New Speed Camera vans
Anyone else spotted the new-style speeding camera vans? They are much taller than the previous ones and have a "port" above the front of the cab where the cameras are mouned. They are also painted a deeper shade of yellow then previously with larger sections of the bodywork in blue. They are tall enough to park among a line of cars and "see over the top". I have a sneaky suspicion that they might be able to clock you both ways -- when approaching or going away from them.

I was FBed this yesterday.
Take a good look at this for those that don’t know it’s what the new speed camera vans look like. There was one on Burnley Road Rstall this week. Apparently they have a camera in the front too and detect seat belts and mobile phones too!

I got caught from one on Padiham road overtaking as it goes to two lanes just after George the fourth with the car wash on your left.
My own mistake so not blaming anyone, but I think where it opens up the limit should change to 40 and then go back to 30 as it goes back into a single lane.

It’s a strange bit of road. Not enough to make it a fast section but not short enough to make it single only with designated parking.MarkGreen wrote:I got caught from one on Padiham road overtaking as it goes to two lanes just after George the fourth with the car wash on your left.

Re: New Speed Camera vans
Agreed, I guess there are also a few left turns on the road so having 2 lanes allows people to pass without having to cue. Just gutting to receive the letter when I stick to 30 all the way up Padiham road and just put my foot down at that point to get passed.ClaretEngineer wrote:It’s a strange bit of road. To be fair, Cricket. Doing 105 down the Ridge is a bit excessive. I usually stick to 80.

If so, you won’t have to worry about speeding for the 28 days, or more, after your court case. What was the speed limit?

105 in a 30? Wow, you don’t f*ck about. 3.5 times the limit is well into the realms of reckless driving and a lot depends on the beak. If you have been ‘got’ it’s unlikely to end well for you. Do you like porridge? If not, it might be worth getting a taste for it in case the beak is a ball breaker. The irony, is that you won’t be getting a speed awareness course!

Re: New Speed Camera vans
If you were holding your phone while doing 105 you deserve all that’s coming to you, and that will be either reckless or dangerous driving. If it’s a camera facing you, it will show you using the phone and a camera from the back probably will. If so, you are so f*cked it isn’t true. If I was you, I’d be sh!tting myself for the next 2 weeks and if you do get away with it, regard it as a life changing escape and a great learning experience.cricketfieldclarets wrote:In a rush to watch the game. Lancashire Road Safety Partnership is made up of various councils and emergency services, who identify sections of road that have high(er) rate of recorded collisions, and to identify drivers either speeding, using their mobile phone, drink/drug driving, or not wearing a seatbelt, which are the main contributors to collisions.
I personally don’t have a problem with this, and if you are doing 105mph in a 30mph, then quite frankly, you deserve to lose your licence as an absolute minimum.

If you’re caught at 105mph in a 30mph, and also on your phone, you’re looking at losing your licence as a bare minimum, with a huge fine. There may also be a custodial sentence too, if not suspended.Burnley1989 wrote:105mph, on the phone and on beak? You’re looking at 9 points there

No, that's catching people breaking the law. How much difference does that 5 miles an hour make? Stop being a bell end and they'll stop using cameras.Stayingup wrote:However you wish to couch it it's a money making scheme. Correct.
Yes it is; driving at 3.5 times the speed limit most certainly is your fault.
If they were there every day, they would become a fixed camera site and people like you would slow down when approaching.
A big blue and yellow van is a warning; if you can’t see it, again, it’s your fault.
If you need your car for work, don’t exceed twice the speed limit or 100mph. If you do, you’ll get banned.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate camera vans too. Having been caught numerous times and banned twice, trust me I hate them as much as anyone. However. If I ever thought about exceeding the limit by 3.5 times, I also have to accept that, if caught, I would have to pay the bill. If you can’t afford to pay such a bill, dont be such a c*nt. What you did was outrageous and if you can’t see that, you probably need time off the road to reappraise your attitude to driving and I would say that to anyone in your position.

He wasn't doing 105 mph. He's winding you up.
But I agree that the police do use the vans to raise money, whoever gets it in the end. Why would they frequently put cameras on the dual carriageway bit of Padiham Road, where there aren't even any footpaths let alone pedestrians? Why not put them outside schools, for example, where speeding is really dangerous? Answer - because it doesn't raise much money.

If it truly was a money making exercise they would do people for 31 or 32 in a 30, but they don't.

They're made to a negative tolerance I believe. Probably something like +3/-0. So you can probably be doing 37/38 on your speedo before the police will enforce the limit (guidelines are prosecute/enforce at 35 in a 30).piston broke wrote:I’ve found, in my car, when I pass the slow down signs that show your speed, if I’m doing 50k on my speedo it flashes up as 47 on the sign. They will prosecute at 31 in a 30mph zone. There is no leeway. I was on a speed awareness course recently and one guy was there having been prosecuted for going 31 in a 30 zone. Be warned.

One of the old myths(?) was that you could appeal if it was within 10% and the machine had to be sent away for testing. They lost more whilst it was away than you paid for the test so they never did anyone within the 10%.CaptJohn wrote:They will prosecute at 31 in a 30mph zone. There is no leeway. Re: New Speed Camera vans
I've got a piece of paper in front of me (not mine!) from Manchester City Council showing a £60 penalty for driving in a bus lane. The picture shows a two-lane road with a bus lane which is about to end for a road junction; and it shows two vehicles, one a car going straight ahead, the other a van turning left. The van pulled into the bus lane twenty yards too soon, but didn't hold up any buses or other traffic.
Manchester Council have decreed that this offence is worth £60 to Manchester Council. Is this because they think driving for twenty yards in a bus lane is a serious offence, or is it because they are money-grabbing so-and-sos? Answer - they're in it for the money, and screw the public for every penny they can. What sort of attitude is that for a city council?
