Yes, shes very good at saying their names as the ball comes to them.
That's about her limit though.

Agree with starting 11, she knows all their names perfectly, but that's about it. Sorry it just doesn't work for me.

I might be in the minority, but I don't like the commentary. But yes, Keown certainly doesn't help.

She was clearly struggling to speak when the ball was in play. Thats why should could only say their names.
She was a lot more insightful and natural sounding when play was stopped.

She was okay but she talks too much. And that's nothing to do with sexism as it's a valid criticism of Clive Tyldesley too. I think it was Barry Davies who said the art of commentary is knowing when to shut up.

Phil Neville suffers from that. Plus he's clearly had some training which says "speak really quickly and sound really animated and excited" since his first appearance a few years ago.Sausage wrote:She was okay but she talks too much. She’s wasn’t so much commentating as reading the players names out not unlike the shipping forecast .As a pitchside ok but women’s voices just really really struggle with the pitch of match commentary especially if it’s an exciting game .Clare Balding used to be an excellent trackside/pitchside operator until she became” Overqueen Empress of all lesbians and the bbc and all
that reside within” and her ego erupted

Re: woman commentator on bbc
I'm afraid I had to turn the sound off the telly it was doing my head in so much. The high pitched tone and not knowing when to shut up make for an awful combination. It's not just the female commentators that suffer from the need to speak constantly instead of letting the game speak for itself but when you add in the tone of voice of the lady this afternoon it was too much for me.
I object to the PCness of it all but I don't think it is a problem with all female commentators but they need to have the right voice for the job just like any good male commentator. Gabby Yorath and Claire Balding have nice voices that are easy on the ear. Jonathan Pearce has an annoying voice, as has the lady from today's match.

I reckon after her first couple of shaky appearances her agent requested getting her on the same game as Patrice Evra because this co-ck is one of the worst pundits I have ever seen - and now he is wearing a bow tie with everything just to reinforce what a clown he is

Interesting hearing about some peoples tolerances on here and what their requirements from a commentator are.

For balance Gabby Logan is very good and there on merit alone not because she is female and to meet some quota.

Gabby is excellent simply because her manner is effortless and she isnt trying to impress like most of this lot who are new on the scene. But of course she doesnt commentate. I watched last night with that woman commentating. omg, her tone hardly changes whether its a goal kick, corner or goal.Blackrod wrote:For balance Gabby Logan is very good and there on merit alone not because she is female and to meet some quota.
fortunately some of the games you can go red button and get radio 5 live. its spoiling what should be a brilliant sporting experience.
Re: woman commentator on bbc
"its spoiling what should be a brilliant sporting experience"
I find that with commentary full-stop. It'd be great if there was a red button option to switch the commentary off and only have the sound of the crowd.

Re: woman commentator on bbc
I like Alex Scott and it makes sense to have a woman on the pundit panel, when probably at least 10 per cent of watchers are women.
Girls who really like footy watch the mans game, whereas the women's game is a good vehicle to get more girls playing sport, tackling obesity etc.
Alex Scott has transcended the two and that's great.
But I bet the ITV blokes are crapping themselves if they land on the same panel as that lawyer though, the one who got the England ladies' manager sacked for making a bad joke about ebola. Though I suppose the likes of Gary Neville and Roy Keane won't give a toss.
Not sure the girls commentating on footy works yet - whereas Ebony on TMS cricket is excellent.
It's all a kind of progress, and easier when you have someone like Alex Scott who looks like a good laugh (as well as being fit).
So, on balance, I say girls in!
And Vive la Difference!

Re: woman commentator on bbc
We have gone from no female pundits to a lot on no time at all. Why ? It's is agenda driven and to make sure they are seen to be doing the right thing. Should there be male pundits commentating on the female World Cup? Not necessarily. Is anyone going to be upset if they don't ? No. If we continue like this it will soon be sexist to have male and female teams.
