A59 Closure
Anyone know the latest on the A59 closure? Caused a few issues trying to get to the north east recently. Mixed messages online.
Need to get to Northallerton (at rush hour) tomorrow. Any ideas on best route. Trying to avoid Ilkley as it added over an hour more than it shouldve on both trips last week. So is M62 best option?
(Maps and Sat Nav actually show the normal route as OK )

Yes, I spent the majority of my time in the North East, unfortunately you’re stuck with the two options mentioned! It’s driving me mad! Heard it was a land slide but you can’t get anywhere near to seecricketfieldclarets wrote:Anyone know the latest on the A59 closure? Caused a few issues trying to get to the north east recently. Its bad enough if its slow traffic on that road. But its a nightmare now.
Will probably go with the 62.

Re: A59 Closure
It's still closed mate.
Try going through Keighley, head towards Bingley on the old road (Riddlesden) not the bypass and turn up through East Morton, past Dick Hudsons and through to Otley that way.
At Pool in Wharfedale go over the river and take first Left onto the B6161 follow it through Leathley and Beckwithshaw. If you don't turn off the B6161 it will take you back onto the A59 at Killinghall.

Re: A59 Closure
The scenic route is Grassington, or Bolton Abbey,—Pateley Bridge—Ripon— Northallerton.
A lot shorter but not the best of roads

Re: A59 Closure
CC there is always the scenic route through Grassington, Pateley Bridge, Ripon and onto the A61, possibly quicker than Ilkley route!

Plenty of routes, rush hour best to pick a quiet way. Skipton Leyburn or Settle Hawes?

Re: A59 Closure
was over visiting family 2 weeks ago had a trip out to york,
like you say that diversion is a nightmare took 3 hours twice as long as it should went 62 back off a bury longer but miles quicker took me an hour and half that way
If I would have known it was closed would have done the 62 to york as well good luck anyhow 62 can be a nightmare on its day

Re: A59 Closure
Went up today drove all way up to where landslide is. There was a guy standing there I told him I was going reservoir and he let me take a left towards west end I think it is. Follow road and brings you out near pateley bridge just follow signs. Hardly anyone on road as its 'access only' but if your in a rush.

You obviously live that way on, you want to get a grip with your local area. You sound like a mucker of mine who can't go anywhere without a sat nav.

Wonderful bit of road, will be sad when it goes to the other side. But I accept it can't keep being closed!

Re: A59 Closure
We came across the problem on Wednesday when going to York to see ARW at the
Barbican. Luckily we are retired and went with a view of having a full day out in
York before the show.
The diversion, whilst interesting in some respects, was essentially a nightmare
even though we had loads of time. However for the journey home we decided to
head for the A1(M) to the M62, M66 and home to Burnley.
All went well until we hit signs that informed us that junctions 18 to 20 on the M62
were closed. This meant we had to exit the motorway at the Rochdale junction and
head over Owd Betts and onwards from there.
Not good on the travel front.
ARW were very good though.

M6 has been 50mph avg speed check for years. Its now down to 40 in parts.
M60 the same.
Lucky to move at peak times on either of those or the 62.
All three as bad as the 25.
M1s the only one thats not too bad (or m6 from carlisle onwards).
Dont get me started on pot holes.

don't have to do it anymore. If you have time restraints and schedules to adhere to
it must be very frustrating.
Another thing I have noticed on my leisurely travels, is the number of road signs
that are either partially or wholly obscured, usually by trees and foliage.
Even today, my trip into Padiham was marred by roadworks with temporary traffic
lights and a single lane road outside Whitegate garage.

Yep. I have to drive a lot but fortunately I am in control of where I go and when to a certain extent. So going before 6 or after 9 usually works a trick. Coming back is usually the bigger nightmare as coming from anywhere after 3 is chaos.Funkydrummer wrote:It must be a nightmare driving around the country for a living, I'm glad I

ditto, I'm having to leave over an hour early at the moment to ensure I leave enough time to get to the N.E in a morning, coming home If I leave after 3 it can take 4 hours so in all roughly 7.5 hours driving every day and to be honest it is usually a drive I quite enjoy, beats the M6 any day.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Yep. From YorkPress.
Incident details

A59 Blubberhouses
A59Road works
A59 both ways closed due to roadworks between Hall Lane / Church Hill (Blubberhouses) and North Moor Road (West End). Following confirmation that movement has occurred in the road, work has begun to fix a crack and dip in the road and to secure the area in case of landslip. Affecting traffic between Harrogate and Skipton. Until 20th June.

Re: A59 Closure
This is becoming regular. They should make North Moor Rd highway standard all the way through from Blubberhouses village to Kex Gill Farm.
It would be value even if only used in emergency.

Quite ridiculous that this road hasn't been upgraded over the years. It's one of the main routes into North Yorkshire. Can you imagine people in the South East having to put up with this shite? It just wouldn't happen because it would be a dual carriageway in this day and age.

Re: A59 Closure
When I travel down to the Turf I usually travel on the A59, however, it was closed a few times during last season and I used the alternative route out of Ripon to Pateley Bridge and then through to Grassington, SKipton and onwards.
It takes marginally longer but is still a decent road and I never got held up at all.
My preference is still the A59, however, when you are travelling down every couple of weeks it is sometimes good to try other routes such as over the tops through Alston and Hartishead and Penrith and down the M6.
Good luck to all you guys who have to use it for work!
