Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
For all the good, there's some bad. I'm sure the older fans will have some good ones but can any beat the loss to Lincoln at home with a full strength team?
Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
Losing in the FRT 6-1 to PNE, Burnley had a free kick in there own half. Pierce took a short free kick to a player who wasn't looking and it went out for a throw in. Dont think I stayed much longer than that.

Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
My most embarrassing moment at TM was when a Trebor mint went down 'the wrong way'. I found myself gasping for breath and honestly thought I was going to die. I was on the Longside and decided to try standing on my hands to get the thing out of me. I didn't get all the way upright but it must have worked as I suddenly felt fine again. People around me looked at me as if I had gone all looney.

Getting beat by 9 man Rochdale with our reserve Goalie in Rochdales nets ( was onloan) will take some beating I guess.

No one really feels embarrassed do they?
I'm a bit grumpy if we lose, particularly if it's underserved. But I've laughed at most of the above.

Results apart as every team can list them I think the FA Cup semi final against Newcastle when we couldn't sell all our tickets and had to send some back. I was stood with the Clarets in Leppings Lane feeling positively outnumbered by Geordies. To add insult to injury we got beat by a one man team who we spent most of the afternoon outplaying.

Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
Beaten 'off the pitch' that day, houseboy. We played Liverpool at home in the FA Cup in 1963, drawing 1-1 before eventually losing the replay 2-1. The home tie was something that has stayed with me ever since. The volume of noise generated that day was indescribable only to be surpassed 11 years later in the semi at Hillsboro and the Kop' end of the ground had no roof. Just incredible noise and support willing on a team that was at best distinctly average.houseboy wrote:Results apart as every team can list them I think the FA Cup semi final against Newcastle when we couldn't sell all our tickets and had to send some back. Watching our ‘supporters’ dismantle the roof of the Darwen End in 1983. I was 14 at the time and then I’ve never been as embarrassed or ashamed watching the Clarets.

The Geordie fans that day were indeed incredible but they should never have got to Wembley where they were easilly beaten by Liverpool whose fans said we would have given them a better game. I always remember (probably 20 years ago) a tannoy announcement that so and so had to go home as his wife had locked herself out of the house and she needed his keys.
Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
I was only young so I am not sure of the score but I remember watching us get well beaten at home to Brentford in Div 2 in the late 90's (I think they were top of the league) and Carl Asaba ran past Mark Winstanley who did a strange forward roll attempt tackle on the wing and they proceeded to score.
Perhaps my kid brain made it more than it was but it felt embarrassing!

Chesterfield away in the Waddle season when they chanted "couldn't score in a brothel" was pretty grim.Think it took us 7/8 games to net a league goal that term, after all the fanfare of the Waddle arrival. thankfully the season had a happy ending with the last day win over Plymouth and the ensuing pitch invasion.

Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
In a similar vein to the Wednesday defeat, I recall a home defeat by Watford (7-4). Also the 6-5 defeat away at Grimsby comes to mind.
I do remember that 5-0 away defeat at Wycombe (my first ever away match), I think we 'only' lost 4-1 the next season and I remember thinking that if we kept 'improving' like that then in another 2 or 3 seasons we might beat them.

Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
They certainly shouldn't have played us in the semi. Nottingham Forest played three games against them in the 6th round, none of which were at their home ground. A pitch invasion in the first game at St. James" where a number of the Forest players were physically threatened and then two games at a neutral Goodison Park. Wouldn't happen now. The final, as you say, was a total non-event, perhaps one of the most one-sided of all time.houseboy wrote:The Geordie fans that day were indeed incredible but they should never have got to Wembley where they were easilly beaten by Liverpool whose fans said we would have given them a better game. Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
Do you remember Malcolm Macdonald's famous quote before that final? 'Wembley will be my stage, watch me go'. I watched that final (in the days when people actually still watched the FA Cup final) and laughed my socks off at the sight of a lumbering Newcastle trying to cope with a Liverpool side who had yet to hit the peak of their domination of not only England but Europe.Silkyskills1 wrote:They certainly shouldn't have played us in the semi. Parachutist on the roof of the Cricket Field Stand, kick off delayed for an hour, and then a tannoy announcement advising the parachutist was off the roof and the game would start soon, but the parachutist was still on the roof!

Undoubtedly going to the wrong ground for a match. There was a early season match against Stockport way back when. It was scheduled to be in Stocky and my dad and I duly turned up at Edgeley Park only to find out that due to ongoing work they had rearranged to play at the Turf
We felt like a right pair of plonkers and duly had a pint and went home.

******* Chesterfield. The away terrace was packed as usual, and I remember stepping out of the ground at the end of the game to see hundreds of Burnley fans fighting with the Chesterfield lot. We were rank bad under Waddle. It’s an absolute miracle we weren’t relegated.
There’s some good candidates, but I think the hiring of Laws is up there. We pretty much told the football world that little ol’ Burnley being in the PL was too much.

For me it was just prior to the Orient game when we went grovelling to the Football League asking them to consider delaying implementation of automatic relegation from the bottom division to the Conference . It summed up just how pathetic a club we'd become. For me no on-the-field performance or result comes close. I was ashamed of my club that day.

Not Pickering's debut, though. Wasn't that against York City, 6-0 win? He looked a good player that day.South West Claret. wrote:Two that spring to mind is David Jones debut away at Leyton Orient and Nick Pickering at home to someone I can't remember.
Or did you mean every other game Pickering played for Burnley? Because there, you'd make a good point.
For our younger readers, should we perhaps stress that this isn't the David Jones we got from Wigan via Blackburn. This is a very very tall centre forward who could still be outjumped by small full backs. One of the Tony Hancock "forward who never scored" school. At least, I hope that's who you mean!!!
(Actually, come to think of it, the goal Jones scored for Doncaster against Burnley after he had left, must be high on the embarrassing scale.)
