Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
Recall being outside the ground before Jones's debut at Leyton Orient. A host of autograph hunters followed this tall, elegant fellow down the street and my naivety (perhaps more desperation) suggested to me that we might have got ourselves something decent. That was until someone informed me that said player was one Kevin Campbell, loaned out to Leyton Orient from Arsenal. The rest of the day just got worse; result wise and the first sighting of our new centre forward. Bloody hell!

That stubbed pen by I think it was Steve Taylor versus Wednesday in the cup. I'd just been sent off for Worsthorne playing a cheating KSC side in the cup (Gimmer et al). Ferkin bad day that.
Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
87 Season bonfire night firework display at back of Bee Hole end club described it as a spectacular half time show to try to get fans on. It peed it down we were dire and the fireworks were like a group of people lighting cigarette with large lighters then a sparkler. I remember thinking how bad does it get.
Re: Most Embarrassing Burnley moment.
In Ade's second spell I remember him rolling the ball wide when he had a virtually open net at home.
It was an absolute shocker.

I wasn't alive then, but the reports of Bob Lord's diatribe against the "Jews at the BBC" doesn't really sit well, especially when the holocaust would have been so much fresher in the memory

Also the 0-0 draw against Luton under Cotterill.
As both teams sheepishly made their way off the pitch I’m sure a few put their hands up as an apology.

Their forward four ran us all over the place that afternoon.edlass wrote:I was only young so I am not sure of the score but I remember watching us get well beaten at home to Brentford in Div 2 in the late 90's (I think they were top of the league) and Carl Asaba ran past Mark Winstanley who did a strange forward roll attempt tackle on the wing and they proceeded to score.
Perhaps my kid brain made it more than it was but it felt embarrassing!
4-2-4 with Marcus Bent and Nicky Forster on the wings and Carl Asaba and Robert Taylor as strikers. Brentford sold all of them very soon afterwards with Robert Taylor scoring five a couple of seasons afterwards for Gillingham.

2008/09
First home game v Ipswich, following a 4-1 humiliation on opening day v Sheffield Wednesday.
Red Devils Parachutes landing on the Cricket Field Stand roof; massively delayed kick off, awful goalkeeping and a rank bad own goal from Stephen Jordan! Oh, and a 0-3 scoreline, leaving us rooted at the foot of the table.
Things got continuously better after that

May as well have played it at Newcastle. How we couldn't sell our tickets is beyond me, especially when you remember the FA Cup was far more important then.Silkyskills1 wrote:Beaten 'off the pitch' that day, houseboy. We played Liverpool at home in the FA Cup in 1963, drawing 1-1 before eventually losing the replay 2-1. The home tie was something that has stayed with me ever since. The volume of noise generated that day was indescribable only to be surpassed 11 years later in the semi at Hillsboro and the Kop' end of the ground had no roof. Just incredible noise and support willing on a team that was at best distinctly average.

Billy O'Rourke's debut in goal away at QPR. Shown on MOTD lost 7-0 and O'Rourke wasn't at fault for any of them, in fact I believe The Burnley Express named him MoM for Clarets.

Bradford away under ternant. 2 1 up against nine men. Under no pressure at all and we decided to play around at the back with ball and think it was Steve Davis but could be wrong lost the ball and we conceded a last minute equaliser.

I'll second Gordonvale on this. It was an established part of the vernacular in those days. Someone was described as "jewish" if they were in any way tight fisted. He was alluding to the BBC not paying enough to televise games. he was NOT suggesting that the BBC was run by actual jewish people. As is the practice nowadays his comments are looked at in today's context rather that the context of the times.GordonvaleClaret wrote:Back then in them good old days when I was a lad and proper plain English was spoken, the word "jew" was common in general chatter.

Think it was 1967, near the end of the season and we let in seven at Sheff Wed. Met up with mates of mine that night, a couple of them Rovers fans and being just 15 years of age had to put up with some ' mickey-taking' which got worse when I bragged to them that Harry Thomson had saved a penalty. Sometimes it really does pay to keep your mouth shut.

10 minutes into the Wembley play off final, I turned to my daughter to tell her I was concerned about Elliott.
Felt he looked like a rabbit in the headlights and I really hoped he wasn't going to bottle the whole game.

Reading the statistic that a top flight club has only ever lost to a non league club on 3 occasions.....and Burnley account for two of them.
