Who scored our most important goals?
I always think that four goals stand out above all others because of their importance.
1. Bert Freeman v Liverpool - FA Cup Final winner
2. Trevor Meredith v Man City - title clinching goal
3. Ian Britton v Orient - goal that kept us in the Football League
4. Wade Elliott v Sheffield United - first ever promotion to the Premier League
Which goals would you add to that and why?

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
One and one only - Ian Britton. Many goals have been important but none more so than the one that stopped the club going into oblivion. Had we gone down that year there would be no Burnley FC now, the club have basically said so many times. We could not have sustained non-league football apparently.ClaretTony wrote:I always think that four goals stand out above all others because of their importance.

John Francis at York and them goals at Plymouth.
I don't think even the most optimistic Claret thought we could beat Plymouth after drawing 0-0 against 10 men in the first leg.

Keane vs Boro at home was massive in terms of us winning the league.

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
Ian's goal has to be on anyone's list.
The others you mentioned are huge too.
But who scored the all important goal to clinch our first league Division 1 title?

Billy Nesbitt scored our second goal in a 2-2 home draw on the final day of the 1920/21 season.Buxtonclaret wrote:Ian's goal has to be on anyone's list.

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
Jimmy Robson May'62, the 100th FA Cup Final goal scored at Wembley.
Re: Who scored our most important goals?
Andy Cooke vs Plymouth you mean. I was about to suggest that as one of the most important goals of the modern era. Dropping back into the lowest tier would have been a disaster.Petersa wrote:Andy Payton....l think...in Waddles last game in 98 which kept Burnley in the 3rd division?
Graham Branch vs Derby in 2004 as well. That 1 nil all but made us safe.
Andre Gray vs Palace as well. Put us 2 nil up and all but confirmed we would survive a PL season for the first time.
Pato and Thompson away at Reading. I'm still convinced we won promotion that night. I left the Madejski Stadium knowing the Final was a formality.

Robbie Blake against Man United. It just showed we deserved to be back amongst the big boys and that we shouldn't be afraid.

Not particularly important though in that we were up with our without it. It did win us the trophy though.Royboyclaret wrote:Colin Waldron at Preston in April'73.

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
It seems to have been long forgotten in folklore with it all going to Britton. Not only did he score the opener, it was his cross that Britton headed in. Neil was our best player at the time, by some considerable distance.Diesel wrote:Neil Grewcock scored against Orient as well, you know?

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
Thanks for putting me right on that one jlup1980...quite agree relegation would have put us back years....would Stan have joined? Would Barry Kilby have stepped up? I obviously don't know. Glad they didjlup1980 wrote:Andy Cooke vs Plymouth you mean. I was about to suggest that as one of the most important goals of the modern era. Re: Who scored our most important goals?
And what a goal that opener was, scored with his weaker foot. Totally agree there, Neil Grewcock was a very good player at that level. he had the ability to bustle past a full back whip in a mean cross or shot. I seem to recall him scoring a cracker away at Bradford a few weeks before the fire and then putting the cross over for Wayne Biggins to equalize from 2 down.ClaretTony wrote:It seems to have been long forgotten in folklore with it all going to Britton. I always wonder what he could have achieved had he not been seriously injured against Halifax in the Sherpa Van - was it Fleming that clattered him?
And one to add to important goals - Kevin Young at home to Chesterfield in 1982 all but sealed the Third Division title. Add to that Paul Comstive and Ashley Hoskin on the plastic at Deepdale in 1988 and we were off to Wembley for the first time in my lifetime.

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
If it`s 4 -
Neil Grewcock...my favourite player when I was a kid and gave us belief (and a platform) to win the game.
John Francis (as much for the fans as as the team..what a night!!!!!)
Andy Cooke against Plymouth as we very might have been back down.
Wade Elliott (very likely in BIG trouble financially if we hadn`t have won that game)

Scunthorpe away was a cracker of a goal. His goal vs Bristol Rovers was also an important one that season.Goobs wrote:Surprised how far we have got without anyone mentioning Little
Ian Wright scored four important goals as well. A couple of big goals on the way to promotion.

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
Many forget this and you are right, could be just as important. I think the feeling is though that, with Orient scoring themselves, it is the second goal that was the more important I suppose. But then if Grewcock hadn't scored when he did the tension may have been too much in the second half. Who knows? The only thing I know is that it was the most noisy and atmospheric game I have ever attended anywhere, at the end my ears were ringing like I'd just come out of a rock concert. Strange to believe that we were hailing as heroes a team that had let us down so badly for most of the previous 45 games that season. But that is football I suppose.Diesel wrote:Neil Grewcock scored against Orient as well, you know?

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
Not sure on the level of importance but Ian Moore's injury time winner at Bradford City in Stan's last season was crucial. We would have been right in the mire had we not won there. Cannot beat a late goal in away game with a massive away following.

Re: Who scored our most important goals?
Can kick this around for hours, but I keep coming back to these 5:
1 - Grewcock 87 v Orient , it broke the deadlock before any desperation could set in.
2 - Britton 87 v Orient - A point would not have been enough, and that would have been that.
3 - Cooke 98 v Plymouth - his second put us back in front when the dreaded basement beckoned again.
4 - Wade's Wembley winner 09 - the impossible dream.
5 - Ings at Ewood 14 - Shove that up yer comfort blanket, and it really set us free.

Can’t beleive they has been no mention of Kalvenes goal away at Blackpool. Vital goal and win to push us into the play off run.
