Lindegard- 7. One smart save down low. Kicking looked good and didn't really do anything wrong.
Lowton- 7. Always a threat when getting forward and swinging balls in, seemed to nick the ball off the opposition all over the pitch.
Mee- 7 good solid play, seems to have become more comfortable on the ball.
Tarkowski- 7 thought Cosgrove game him a tough game in the air but he showed some good skill to turn his man once or twice and take defence into attack.
Ward- 7 solid enough but looked to be struggling from the earlier collision before he was subbed.
Gudmundson- 7 showed moments of class but wasn't in the game for long periods of time, particularly the first half. Unlucky to not have scored today.
Cork-8* kept running all game, nicked the ball a lot, dictated the tempo at times and got a goal.
Westwood-7 lovely assist, neat and tidy at times but occasionally dosnt quite come off for him. Compliments Cork.
Lennon- 6.5 drifted inside far too much and seemed to be offering no width in the first half. Is this dyches system? The few times he stayed wide he caused problems.
Vokes- 7 dominated them early on but faded out of the game by extra time, showed some good hold up play. Unlucky not to have scored.
Wood- 7 looked a bit more mobile today, got a goal but his overall game play is below either Barnes or Vokes.

Barnes-8 plus one for the goal and looked to link the play together, no surprise we looked more threatening when he came on.
McNeil-6 didn't look out of place but didn't really see too much of the ball.
Taylor-7 plus one for the assist
Hendrick-6 didnt touch the ball much but fresh legs at an important time.

Played some okay football at times but also went hiding for parts of the game, I thought it was gonna be one of those games at 1-1 where it was never gonna go in for us. Fair play to Lindegard who's looked solid enough for back up.
An awful ref performance coupled with one of the worst linesman you will ever see, he didn't see anything on the pitch and the throwing he gave near the corner flag before changing his decision was utterly baffling.

Thought Aberdeen looked okay, fought hard and Mackay-Stephens looked decent.

Watched on live stream so not easy to mark. But from what I saw here goes

Lindegaard 7 One good save. Poor distribution
Lowton 6 Like most of the team looked off the pace
Mee 4 Not his usual self. Hope his mind was not elsewhere
Tarks 6 As Lowton
Ward 6 Better second half until injury
Lennon 5
Cork 8 MOM
Westwood 6
JBG 7 Showed some decent touches
Wood 5 Good goal but not much else
Vokes 5

Taylor 6 Looked better than Ward and great cross for goal
Barnes 6 Looked better with him on.
McNeil 6
Hendrick N/A but could have cost us the tie with a crazy handball

Lindegaard - 7. Really good save down to his right in first half, not much else to do

Lowton - 6 ok. Just ok. Doesn't seem to overlap or work as well with Lennon as he does with JBG
Tarkowski 7- dealt with Cosgrove Much better than last week
Mee - 7 great positional play and defensive work but decision making when in possession slow and predictable
Ward - 6 wanted to get down the left but looked very heavy legged early doors

Lennon - 6 wanted him to hug the line a bit more and commit the full back as he had him on toast when 1v1

Cork - 7 appeared to be man marked for the first hour, couldn't have a **** without the young lad wiping his arse. Became more free as they tired and made subs and great header
Westwood - 7 kept things ticking over and great ball for Woods goal. I like his aggressive play
JBG - 7 very positive when in possession and clearly our main threat. Work rate off the ball phenomenal too

Vokes - 7 very good first half hour but looked to get a whack from their defender which knocked his confidence. Didn't win as much from then on.
Wood - 6 took goal really well but didn't offer much else until he was taken off

McNeil - 7 too early to suggest throwing him in the team or regular matchday squad but looks a confident lad, useful in the air and comfortable in possession
Taylor - 8 only half an hour against a tiring side but was very positive in his runs and crosses. I like that he doesn't allow defence to set themselves and whips the early ball in for strikers to attack
Barnes - 7 a nuisance throughout and great hold up play, wish he wouldn't throw himself to the ground so much, when we don't get the free kick it instantly puts us under unnecessary pressure
Hendrick - 6 not much time to get into the game so can't really mark higher or lower.

Lennon 3

I'd like to know what he did to warrant any score above a 3?

Lindegaard 7
Lowton 5
Ward 5
Mee 5
Tarkowski 6
Cork 7
Westwood 6
Gudmundsson 6
Lennon 5
Vokes 6
Wood 5 (-2 for the worst defensive header I have ever seen, when we were totally comfortable)

Barnes 7
McNeill 6
Hendrick 5
Taylor 7

On a night when Aberdeen gave everything they had, and then gave some more, they came up against the worst EPL side they could have faced - one who would give just as much, but have quality too.

We were dead on our feet with backs to the wall at the end of normal time, but came again. There was little of our good football, but plenty of guts. The away goal by the kid after Wood’s excellent assist nearly killed us, well, it nearly killed me. We were comfortable then I couldn’t see us winning it. Credit to them for finding a way. Now I will have to find a way to Turkey.

A shout out too to the excellent Massimiliano. His last match was the World Cup Final as VAR Ref, and his no nonsense refereeing was superb, like any good Italian he expected defenders to do all they can to defend their goal. He missed one or two, in probably the biggest match of his career so far (when not in a TV booth) but I liked his approach and his strong arm signals which made perfect sense. Collina is back!

Lindegaard 7 steady and punched well when he needed to punch
Lowton 6
Ward 4 thought he was absolutely dreadful. And I'm his biggest fan.
Meet 4 equally poor
Tarkowski 6
Jbg 6 same as last week tried hard
Lennon 7 thought he was progressive and tried things. Also tracked back well including one fantastic tackle that lead to a good break. Was surprised he came off
Cork 6
Westwood 5
Wood 4 anonymous apart from his one chance where he took his goal well
vokes 5 poor but a fabulous header which deserved a goal

As always when playing so called lesser opponents we stooped to their level. Not intending to belittle our opponents but we should be more confident and clinical un games like that. Especially when we take the lead.

This is compared to the limit of what I could ever expect from them indivdually.

Lewis 9
Logan 7
Devlin 7
Hoban 9
McKenna 6 (expect higher standards from imo)
Considine 9 (never expect much)
Shinnie 9
Ferguson 10
Mackay-Steven 8
McGinn 5
Cosgrove 7

Expectations aside, on a FM scale of 6 is the starting assumption (with no prior prejudice):

Lewis 9
Logan 7
Devlin 7
Hoban 8
McKenna 8
Considine 7
Shinnie 9
Ferguson 7
Mackay-Steven 8
McGinn 6
Cosgrove 6

McKenna is our shining star, and was probably culpable for the first goal, and the last. He's 21 though, and the character that will learn in an instant. In every other test, he was first with his head to the ball. I love the lad.

I found the game tedious for large stretches. We won and played... okay, I guess. The tactics are really hard to watch at times and although Aberdeen played to a far higher standard than many of us might have expected, they still were not Man City: we could, and should, have spent more time playing football and less time practising line outs.

Thought we dominated most of the game apart from small spells. Let’s not pretend they were a pretty average team that had 11 men behind the ball in there cup final.
This tournament is a different dimension for burnley, we never normally have more than 40 percent possession and never have to play teams that sit 11 men behind the ball. Thought it was a mature performance from the clarets and apart from Ferguson scoring the goal of his career they never really looked like scoring.

Some of the ratings are really harsh.

We went hiding after we scored the first goal, didn't create all that much 1st half, they scored a great goal from an abysmal defensive header. We had control for the vast majority of the 120 minutes, we lack a spark of creativity to unlock deep sitting defensively setup teams. Need a big improvement in the Premier League.

Job Done. We are through with a huge sigh of relief. This was the draw I feared and it was even harder than I expected but job done.
Last night wasnt great overall but I liked how strongly we started each period of the match. Some players have been below par for most of pre-season and it is to be hoped their performance levels improve quickly. Our lack of creativity without Defour and Brady should be a massive concern to the Board and management and they need to get those bids accepted.

Lindegaard - 8 He deserves a huge amount of credit for the way he has come in to the team and made some very good stops at important times
Lowton - 6 Not quite at it for me
Mee 6 - Improved from away leg but distribution sadly lacking
Tarkowski - 6 I still think he is believeing his own publicity and needs to get back to basics but like Ben better than Pittodrie
Ward - 5 One of those who hasnt been at his best and it turned out to be a blessing that Taylor had to replace him
Lennon - 5 We struggled to get him in the game even when we were playing well but overall been poor and same again last night.
Cork - 8 MOM for goal. Thank goodness for Jack. Better all round perfromance and trademark goal was massive
Westwood 7 Better than he has been and of course that ball to Wood was sublime
JBG 7 - He is pretty much a 7 every week. Just missing that match winning element that takes him to 8/9's. Hopefully saving himself for when the season starts
Wood 6 - Better in our good periods but we improved immensely when he had to go off
Vokes 6 - Looks like he is going to coontinue to be a better impact sub

Barnes 7 We looked so much more likley to score when he came on. Understandably a bit rusty but did what he does. Didnt like the unecessary cupping of ear to the Aberdeen fans. They didnt deserve that and sadly lacking in class.
Taylor 7 Been hoping he would get a run out as I've felt Ward is not quite at it especially going forward. Good contribution to our progression.

Mightily relieved to actually get into Europe proper as I think we would have had the p1ss ripped out of us had we gone out but blimey we will have to improve to get farther in the comp and invest to have a decent season.

Lindegaard 7 good save 1st half, safe handling.
Lowton 6
Tarkowski 6 the better of the 2 CB
Mee 5 struggled to find a claret jersey when given all the time in the world. They certainly did their homework on him
Ward 5 abit off tonight, not his usually high standards
JBG 7 very positive
Cork 8 excellent
Westwood 6 did the basics, great pass for the goal.
Lennon 6 positive, but it came to very little
Vokes 5 bullied with old school defending by 21 year old rookie, will get up to speed with games
Wood 5 as above

Barnes 7 looked bright
McNeil 6
Taylor 7 2 lovely crosses, looked quicker and more positive in 30 mins than the other 2 full backs put together all night, although Aberdeen were probably spent.

Did enough, and with a few ref decisions or nearlys could have been 4 or 5.
We will get better than that, to say we were not up to our usual standards, we still created enough to win the game comfortably.
It's in truth still about the premier league, avoiding injuries/risks and getting every one fit come the Southampton game.

Lindegaard 7 - looked competent
Lowton 6 - poor by his standards
Mee 5 - really poor
Tarkowski 7 - did well
Ward 5 - better in second half
Lennon 4 - terrified of the touch line, poor positional play throughout
Cork 7* - another header his Dad would have liked. Continually fouled throughout
Westwood 6 - thought he did ok
JBG 6 - some good moments but was very poor for the first half
Wood 7 - good finish but got both barrels from SD after his poor defending lead to their goal
Vokes 7 - won a lot, good effort

Taylor 6 - great cross for Cork's goal
Barnes 7 - getting back to form
McNeil 6 - little impact

Shocking official - better get used to them

Time for a new left side of the defence I think. Mee is one foot out of the camp going off these two games vs Aberdeen. I thought he was dreadful last night - his distribution in particular was nothing short of shambolic. It was just a very un-Ben Mee-like performance. I hope I'm wrong but I think Gibson is clearly earmarked as his replacement.

I've been banging the drum for Charlie Taylor fora while and I think he deserves a shot at the first time, I really do. His delivery into the box is brilliant and it gives us another dimension. He's physically more imposing than Ward and is a little bit of pace. Get him in the team for a sustained run please.

A special mention for Vokes and Cork who I thought were terrific for the whole 120 minutes. Vokes was dead on his feet by the end but he gave those CB's a real test last night and deserved a goal for his endeavour.

lindegaard - 7 a couple of smart saves, some good claims and punches.

lowton - 7 seemed to be playing with some freedom as he popped up all over the pitch

tarkowski - 7 bullied their clogger up front

mee - 6 a couple of frankly awful passes but otherwise fine

ward - 5 struggled a bit with mackay steven who is no great shakes

cork - 8 constantly fouled throughout, where he found the energy to burst into the box for his goal at that stage of the game only he knows

westwood - 7 lovely ball on the spin for the first goal

gudmundsson - 6 again better on the right than the left, his well-saved snapshot on the half volley would have been a fine goal

lennon - 6 also better on the right than the left, worked hard, tracked back, put in some good tackles and should have had a penalty

wood - 5 well taken goal, terrible assist, not much else

vokes - 7 ran himself into the ground and faded a bit late on but his superb header brought a world class save from lewis

barnes - 7 made the difference up front as he links play better than wood whilst being equally mobile. some excellent shithousery when cork scored.

taylor - 7 upgrade on ward in terms of going forward on the night, beauty of a cross on to cork's swede

mcneil - 6 brilliant for him to get on the pitch in europe and he wasn't overawed by the occasion

just as in the first leg we dominated for long periods and deserved the win in the end. that their goalkeeper was their best player across the tie tells its own story and he's made 4 outstanding saves to keep them in it.

to produce two games of such intensity in the midst of pre-season is of huge credit to both teams. european games are going to have a lot to live up to now.

two great clubs, two great occasions, two great sets of fans and a wonderful spirit about the whole thing. a privilege to have been at both games.

Not a lot offensively but he does put a shift in covering, probably a 5.

Ok. Maybe I'm being harsh with a 3 but first and foremost I'd like him to think and act positive in his positioning and decision making. Too many backward balls and his body language doesn't inspire confidence.

Thought Lennon played well myself. Mind you I wasn't at the game.

Totally agree. He seems to have lost all confidence in his ability to beat a defender, with pace or a trick. Can’t remember his last dangerous cross, most of the time he lays it back to the FB. Nothing wrong with that if they then get an early ball in.

Reference Wood's defensive header. Dyche seemed to be having a right go at him on Tv pics I saw.

Lindegaard 7 - Looked pretty confident, commanding and distribution was surprisngly good too.
Lowton 7- Didn't get forward as much as usual in my opinion but think he was solid defensively.
Tarkowski 6- Good game on the whole but struggled with Cosgrove a few times.
Mee 6- Mark off for awful distribution most of the night. Stood up solidly though against an incredibly physical striker.
Ward 6- Thought he looked good but could see he was struggling towards the end.
JBG 7- Looked a threat whenever he got the ball and some very neat touches throughout.
Cork 8*- Classic Cork display. Keeps it simple and an extra mark for the goal.
Westwood 7- Great assist for the first and a few other key passes. Full of energy too/
Lennon 6- Looked most likely to make something happen in the first half and made a few really good runs but just didn't get the service. Think a Dyche pre-season has worked wonders for him though.
Vokes 7- Worked hard all game and was so unlucky not to score. Would like more of him and Barnes together.
Wood 6- Scored with what became a fairly tricky chance for him. Massive improvement on his touch from the previous leg too. Hope the injury isn't too bad.

Barnes 7- Massive lift at HT with him coming on. Our best striker on the night and in the squad.
McNeil 6- Thought he showed some good touches, positionally a little shaky for the first 10 minutes but didn't look out of place afterwards. Hope we see a lot more of him this season/
Taylor 7- Bar one slip he didn't put a foot wrong really. Two or three great balls into the box. Big season for him I think.
Hendrick 6- Not much time but fresh legs and thought he did well.

Never done the player ratings before but always read with great interest. My first game on Turf since the Leeds game last September due to a change in job. Always watch the full matches back on Clarets Player but you really just don't get the full picture that you do at the game. Went with my mum (Man United fan) uncle (Man City fan). Both thought JBG was our best player on the night and could be destined for a bigger club but I politely disagreed.

You can start the bidding at £20m. Pocket change for you chaps. ;)

Or we'll take £15m and a 20% sell-on.

Lindegaard - 7 - couple of solid saves. Might have been more dominant in the air a couple of times but that's natural given the time he's been out of action.

Lowton - 6 - ok defensively but might have done more going forwards.

Ward - 6 - started ok but clearly got a knock and struggled a bit after that.

Tarkowski - 7 - pretty assured.

Mee - 6 - solid enough defensively but his use of the ball seemed a bit distracted.

Cork - 7 - id have liked to see him make more runs like the one for our second goal, but he took that well and was generally steady enough.

Westwood - 5 - wonderful pass to Wood, but after that his passing fluctuated between being over ambitious and far too safe, without ever hitting the happy medium we needed. On nights like this he doesn't offer the sort of brave, decisive forward passes Defour offers.

Lennon- 6 - worked hard and twice did a brilliant job of spotting potential counter attacks and closing them down, and i thought he carried a threat when we got him into the game going forwards. We didn't do that enough though, and he needs the midfielders to see his runs in behind earlier.

JBG - 7 - quiet first half, but much brighter after the break. Weve still not quite worked out how to get the best out of him and Lennon at the same time.

Vokes - 6 - did ok, and unlucky wirth his header, but didnt really link the game as we needed him to.

Wood - 6 - took his goal well and appeared unlucky to be penalised just on half time when running in behind, but again his link game left a bit to be desired.

Barnes - 7 - intelligent movement caused Aberdeen problems.

Taylor - 7 - wonderful cross for our second goal and generally added an attacking threat we'd lacked till that point.

Hendrick- 6 - got about the park well.

McNeill- 6 - a real positive: showed some very promising touches and was impressively poised for one so young. Clearly one to watch.

Great atmosphere, wonderful occasion and a very good, full blooded game which we just about deserved to win. But many of our flaws against stubborn, well organised opponents were on show again - a bit slow to explot space, lacking men in the box at times, not quite composed enough to pick a killer pass. Heres hoping we address one or two of them over the next week.

McKenna?

Happy to hear that Aberdeen snubbed the recent interest from Swansea in him.

I think I saw him being given a special tour of the Gawthorpe training facility on Friday, before Sean whisked him off for an omelette dinner.

I thought it was a nice touch to give him a Burnley shirt with his name on it as a memento. Did all of the Aberdeen players get one?

John McGinn

As a fan with greater knowledge of the Scottish clubs and players, how do you rate John McGinn from Hibs?

Player Ratings

Not comfortable giving them yet. We are still looking like a pre-season work in progress team with quite a bit to do.

Very good to see the lads come through a hard fought 120mins without fading. Fitness is obviously on point.

Nice to see Taylor on the pitch serving up some tasty crosses. He worked well with Wood in the Championship doing the same.

Lindegaard did well, but I don't think he has been truly tested yet.

Barnes is a cheeky little scamp
