Most divisive Burnley 11
The thread on Hendrick made me think, we have had plenty of scapegoats down the years. Or players who divided opinion despite success.
Who would your 11 be?
Jensen - Played a key role in our promotion. And Played for more games for a far longer period than anyone imagined. Played more games than most keepers we have had. Some loved him. Some loved to hate him. Personally liked him.
Mears - Looked brilliant when he signed him. But that was before the likes of Trippier and Lowton and after years of Dean Wests etc. Was awful at free kicks but thought he was Beckham.
Bikey - Should have realised he was a loose cannon after the play off game against Reading! Had the talent and physical attributes to be a top class defender. Had the mentality to be inside for a long stretch. Once met Howe and Tindall on a pre match ground tour. To say they werent complimentary of him was an understatement.
Gnohere - He was Bikey MK1. Stan didnt manage him the best. Scored one of the most memorable goals ever. Was a real fans favourite. But also threw a few in.
Fox - Some people thought Easton was better than him. Some thought he was premier league quality. The reality is he was somewhere in between and shows that by still playing at that level.
Arfield - To say we got him for nothing when he was unwanted by Huddersfield shows how much value we got from him. Scored some vital goals in The Championship AND Premier League and put some very good, hard working performances in. But some fans expected more without appreciating where he had come from and what he had done.
Hendrick - £13m price tag doesnt help. Does a good job in midfield. But the stats dont lie. His return on goals and assists isnt good enough.
Jones - Probably the most underappreciated player I saw for us. Did the simple stuff extremely well. Rarely lost the ball. Complimented Marney very well. Could never understand why people didnt rate him. Apart from perhaps his low key style.
Boyd - Hardest working player we have ever had. Which is the main thing you want from a Burnley player. Yet he was never fully popular with most fans I spoke to. Never really got to show his skill too often but that was more down to system than talent.
Gray - 23 goals to fire us to The Championship in his first season. 9 Goals in his debut premier league season. Cost £7m sold for £18m. Yet hardly any Burnley fan likes or liked him. Strange one. Was one of best strikers to watch for me. Pure striker.
Fletcher - Had a fantastic touch, had a decent return of 9 on his only premier league season with us. Signed for just £3.5m yet many thought he was awful.
Manager - Steve Cotterill. Did a great job in very different and challenging times. Started with next to no players and first aim was to survive which he did comfortably. Closed the gap on Blackburn with a limited squad. Built a side that would later go onto get promoted. Got a bit stale towards the end but overall did a great job.

Arfield divisive? Really?
I know some didn't like him as much as other players, but not divisive, methinks.
Particularly after "that goal" against the Undead.

Graham branch had a bit of a torrid run with the crowd and then all of a sudden became a bit of a cult hero. I used to think he was getting sympathy cheers, then i realised how much i loved him playing for us

Derek Scott. We usually played better with him in and missed him when not but folk couldn’t get over the family connection and abused him.

I always thought it was just accepted that Blatherwick was fairly useless.
Tony Grant has be in there surely? A classic ‘it’s the things you don’t see that he does well’ player.

How about 10 most divisive Burnley managers? Actually, it would be a very short list. One name would make up all 10 entries.

Surely Lee Grant was far more divisive than Jensen? Half the fan base thinking he was the best keeper we'd had in years and the other half thought he was a complete liability.cricketfieldclarets wrote:The thread on Hendrick made me think, we have had plenty of scapegoats down the years. Then what about Stephen Jordan or even Ben Mee for left back? Maybe too many considered Jordan to be shite for it to be divisive but for quite a while Ben Mee split opinion at LB.
I think Tyrone was pretty much universally considered a decent RB but some questioned his mentality.

Alan Moor and Keith Treacey
Ross Wallace
Wade Elliott
All inconsistent wingers.
All the managers have divided fans throughout my time as a Claret.
But probably Jimmy Mullen gets this by the time he left. Remarkabe what he achieved but the club/Teasedale didn't have the resources to match or maintain it. Got quite hostile at times between the Mullen out brigade and his supporters. Fights, arguments job lot.

Agree on all the OPs being divisive bar Arfield and possibly Mears and Fletcher who I think were largely considered good players by the majority.
FWIW I still can't figure out if Tony Grant was crap or not.

Probably because he wore his heart on his sleeve and watch us from the longside and sported a Burnley tatto that's all that was required in them days we where bad and heading for worse to come

I can't remember Cotterill getting much stick in the 19 game winless run.
The 19th game was Preston away if I remember rightly with plenty of Clarets there. No Cotterill out chants or anything like you would expect.

The football was tough to watch and the long winless run was abysmal but we were that bad and short on numbers, Michael Duff played upfront for us..... Kept us up on nothing and built a solid foundation for the next manager.joey13 wrote:Manager - Steve Cotterill. Did a great job in very different and challenging times. Phil Malley. Most thought he was absolutely terrible but without his steel in the middle of the park teams would have walked through us even more.
Ron Futcher. So far ahead in his thinking that no one had a clue what he was doing. Made him look terrible and slow but was light years ahead as far as a football brain.
Steve Taylor. Headless!!! Played about 500 league games and scored 1 in 3 career wise but couldn't even strike a ball right.

Re: Most divisive Burnley 11
Paul Weller, especially in his early years when he was developing under Mullen. Then some fans never seemed to forgive him for the trial at West Ham. I think only his illness stopped him signing? He was great at times when he got back regularly under Stan, and that goal at Oldham in the Waddle season was something else.
