I’m in my 50s and neither do I! Clearly England goalkeepers used to be a lot smaller!

I'm old enough to remember Colin McDonald playing for the Clarets (World Cup 1958 he was England's keeper). I know the passing of time sometimes clouds the memory, but I think he is still the greatest goalkeeper we have ever had.

In my youth one of the most eagerly anticipated days of the month was the one when Charles Buchan's Football Monthly dropped through the letter box. Even more so on the rare occasions that the front page featured a Burnley player.
Step forward - Colin McDonald - October 1958, resplendent in England jersey and Cap.

Fantastic line up of world class goalkeepers, what a shame we cant say the same about our outfield players so far.

Colin does look well! He was a brilliant goalie back in the day, unfortunately he had one major flaw. If he expected a shot to go wide, he’d raise his arms, on occasion the shot would go in just inside the post. If memory serves he broke a leg playing a meaningless game for Football League vs League of Ireland which more or less ended his career.
Re: A collection of England goalkeepers
Is Joe Hart the odd one out then? In that, although he has the most caps, he hasn't played for England whilst at Burnley?
And that he has tights on.

Being far too young for Colin McDonald, I just hit the google button. I happened upon a Lancashire Telegraph article - "vote for your keeper in the Hall of Fame". Just to show how blessed we are now, the candidates to accompany Blacklaw & McDonald were... Beresford, Jenson & Stevenson.
Re: A collection of England goalkeepers
Yes. We have more goalkeepers and Centre Forwards available than midfield players as things stand.

a midfield of world class players would set you back circa £300-400 million, I still cant understand why our board aren't giving Sean the money
Re: A collection of England goalkeepers
My dad followed Burnley everywhere at the time McDonald played....if he played in the 1958 World Cup and got the clean sheet v Brazil is that not the world cup that Pele broke on to the world scene as a young man ? Is it not that World Cup when they always show the goal Pele scored when he chests it down in the area chips to over a player and scores in the bottom corner ?
That's also the World Cup when all the home nations qualified I think....or at least Northern Ireland, Wales and England did...not sure about the sweaty socks !

Aye, prolific goalscorer was Juste Fontaine. Played for Reims against Burnley in 1960 in the European Cup.TVC15 wrote:Also the World Cup the most ever goals were scored by one player - Fontaine with 13 I think

Re: A collection of England goalkeepers
exileclaret I remember Colin McDonald doing the arms upto one side of his body or the other, depending which side the shot was going. Very clearly remember a goal he conceded at the Beehole end v WBA. A shot from outside the box flew into to right hand side of the net, as Colin arms raised to his right as he moved across his goalmouth and watched it go in. A shot he should and could have saved.
Royboy besides McDonald( in his blue England cap, with tassels), do you know if Adamson was the only other player we had who appeared on the front cover of Charles Buchan

Re: A collection of England goalkeepers
McDonald was 6ft 2ins although you can see from the pics he's nowhere near that height now. The only time they wore gloves was when it was very wet. Always green jerseys in the Football League with shorts and socks the same colour as all the other players.mkmel wrote:In those days not only were the keepers generslly shorter but am I right in thinking that they didn't wear gloves?

Re: A collection of England goalkeepers
Broke his leg in a challenge with Liam Tuohy. Wouldn't say it was a meaningless game as he was representing the Football League.
As for goalkeepers wearing gloves my memory is of the type of glove you see worn by snooker referees. Just a covering for the hand and definitely nothing like the ones worn nowadays.
The Charles Buchan Football Monthly always makes me smile. I had(still have) two elder brothers so let's say I learned how to 'wait my turn' when it came to reading it. Was always the same on a Saturday evening with the 'Sports' paper and that was after I had to troll down to 'Driver's on Bury Rd. in Haslingden to buy it. Wonderful memories though.

Re: A collection of England goalkeepers
Happy birthday to Colin, he'll be 88 next week. It's great to see him appreciated by the current crop of Clarets. I believe Tom Heaton has been instrumental in ensuring Colin has been treated as he should be. His horrendous injury prevented him from a League championship medal and loads of England caps.
Brilliant article... thanks

I can assure you Alan Stevenson was in a different class to Beresford and Jenson. Probably the last really good keeper we had before our current England keepers
