Have we ever had a Spanish player play for the mighty clarets?
Jay Rod doesn't count I'm afraid.
I can't remember any.

Did Wigan have a couple of Spanish players in early 90’s who appeared in our reserves on trial?

Re: Spanish player for Burnley???
This promted me to check and, oddly, not a single Spaniard has ever played for us, ever. 1 Italian (does anyone remember Luigi Cennamo?) has crossed our doorstep. There have been a smattering of Europeans but probably about the same number as there are at Chelsea right now. In fact, oddly, there seems to have been almost as many Australians as Europeans with a small sprinkling of Africans and South Americans thrown in.
Having never checked this out before and thinking about the fact that many people on here have often criticised our 'foreign policy' it appears that we are very much a British player only club. The flags at the side of the name tells it's own story, overwhelmingly English (not surprisingly) then Scotland, Ireland (both) and Wales.
Here's an odd one though. Jamaica is not a country you readilly associate with football is it? We've had seven (that's 7) Jamaicans plus two others from the West Indies in general. That's nearly enough to make up a useful cricket team. Wonder if I was looking at players who'd played for Burnley CC?

Gifton Noel-Williams was sold to a Spanish club.
So Spain owe us for the talent we sold them - or perhaps we owe them!

No. I saw that but although it is an Italian name he was in fact.....Dutch.gandhisflipflop wrote:Wasn't gentile Italian?
The Gentile I remember mainly was Claudio, the animal who Keegan once said of, "I was stood at the side of him at an awards ceremony once and it's the only time he didn't kick me'. Mainly with Juventus he was about as far removed from his surname as a player as could be. Apparently now some sort of managerial advisor to the South Korean side. Great defender but what an absolute beast.

Marco Gentile was the nephew of Claudio Gentile so whilst Marco is a dutch national his heritage is still Italian.houseboy wrote:No. I saw that but although it is an Italian name he was in fact.....Dutch.

Claudio like you say was a frightening centre back....but was actually also a very good player. There is some FIFA footage of the World Cups I once saw where there was a camera following Gentile as he marked a young Diego Maradona. It`s incredible - he should have been arrested !! When people talk about man marking an oppositions best player then this is probably the most extreme example you could ever see. But it did work as Maradona hardly got a kick (of the ball !!)

Played many times for Italy. Actually a remarkably good defender but he was, to put it politely, very physical.piston broke wrote:Almost Italian, Claudio was born in Tripoli, Libya.
