Maine Road
The best UK football ground ever for me even though we always did pants at City.
These new grounds have destroyed football.

Re: Maine Road
You weren't at the Charity Shield match in 73 then?

Re: Maine Road
We won the League title there and the Charity Shield. It certainly holds historical significance for us.

Only been twice.
A 5-0 drubbing in the league cup and a great Oasis concert.

Certainly had more character and more enjoyable to visit than the Etihad.

Behind the old White Heart Lane, Main Road was my favourite away ground.
Been on many times with friends.
Kippax always reminded me of the Longside.

Rune Vindheim and Andy Cooke - 2-2 draw.
Glen Little missed penalty and a big defeat.

Probably one of the grounds I have visited most over the years including games that did not include the clarets. And of course I was there when Colin Waldron won the charity shield for us in 1973.

Often wondered what the 'Bell / Waldron' restaurant was like that night.

Re: Maine Road
As a (sandwich course) student, I worked/lived south of Manchester in 2nd half of 1969. Shared a house with a few other lads who supported various teams including 1 Man U and 1 Man C.
I went on a fair few Main Road games & City had a great team then (Pardoe, Book, Doyle, Bell, Summerbee, Lee et al); we usually went on the Kippax Street "long side"- a great atmosphere it was.
That year I saw 3 derbies, a City v United league game + a two-legged League Cup tie in December (I think there were 5 derbies in all that season because they also drew each other in the FA Cup in early 1970 after I left).
There was huge violence at all 3 games I went to at both grounds.
Of course, Frannie Lee went down for a pen at one of the games.
Clarets didnt play at Maine Road that season until Jan 1970 but Ive seen us play there a few times otherwise. My dad went to see THE Man City v BFC game 1960 but I was deemed too young (at 10) to go to that one.

Re: Maine Road
It was a proper ground before that stupid oversized kippax stand, and away supporters were move to that temp stand. Sat on the back row for one game, didn’t feel I was at the bloody game.

Re: Maine Road
Best performance I saw there was the Rolling Stones in1990.
Became a shambles of a ground, was always dodgy for away fans and not a place I particularly enjoyed going to.

Re: Maine Road
On parking up we were usually greeted with 'look after your car mister'? You'd have been a fool to say no. Like CT says, it was a place I enjoyed more leaving than I did arriving.

Re: Maine Road
I got the car looking after routine at the Apollo once. They’d nicked it by the time I got back. Birmingham, Liverpool & Manchester is where that always happened.Silkyskills1 wrote:On parking up we were usually greeted with 'look after your car mister'? You'd have been a fool to say no. Re: Maine Road
Had the best day of my life at Maine Rd in 1960 and another great one in 73 for the Charity Shield win. Also had one of worst when I was dragged their to listen to Billy Graham ( 50`s I think) and also had a shocker their in the late 80`s ( not a Burnley game ! ) Overall the 2 great days give me fond memories.

Re: Maine Road
I got dragged there with my mate twice in the early 70's by my mate's dad,who was a City fan, to watch them against Wolves and Liverpool. He thought he was giving us the best ever treat but I hated it. Just couldn't see the point of watching two teams that were not Burnley. We sat in the stand near the woman that rang that bloody bell throughout the game.
