January transfer window
what Players should/could we be targeting.
I’ve tried to be as realistic as possible in my selections:
Mason Mount (15mil) probably the most unrealistic, given he is playing extremely well and will most likely be gaining attention from other clubs IE James Maddison last season.
Loftus cheek - no idea how much we would have to play. But isn’t getting a sniff at Chelsea and if he wants to carry on getting game time with England he needs to be playing.
Loan or fee he would be fantastic.
Alioski - cheaper option from the championship. Hasn’t set the world alight but would do a job.
Barnes - this lad has really impressed me every time I have seen him. I know he is on loan from Leicester, but I think he is exactly what we are missing. Speed, power, creativity. Would probably command a 20m fee even though he hasn’t started a premier league game.

Re: January transfer window
Leicester won't be selling Barnes and Chelsea won't be selling Mount. If Loftus-Cheek leaves it will be back to Crystal Palace and Alioski is a good Championship player.
So none of the above for me.
So none of the above for me.
Re: January transfer window
Harvey Barnes is on a season long loan at West Broom so don't know if he can be recalled by Leicester and sold or loaned out to another club
And Leicester may want to keep him after his stint with the Baggies
Barnes did well when he was on loan at that horrible club down the road from me
As for Loftus Cheek I don't think Chelsea would sell him but I would be delighted if we got him in on loan

Re: January transfer window
If the late deadline day rumour was true I could see us back in for James Ward Prouse.
Only 97 minutes played, I'd want a move if I was him. While we are ok for set pieces once Brady and Defour are back he seems to fit the Dyche mold, still only 23 (24 in Nov)

Re: January transfer window
We need to think about bringing in 3-4 players and shipping a couple out afterwards.
James Ward-Prowse would give us extra class in midfield and another wide option
Aron Gunnarsson would give us extra "bite" in midfield
Jay Rod would give us a different type of attaking player
Am sure that there are other names too that people can come up with. I think we also need a new LB too as Ward's days with us are numbered. God knows who though....
As for shipping out- I think that there's several who need to be moved on if we're to push the squad forward. Am sure that Dyche will have some ideas on this front too as he knows that we can't stay stationary and that we need to keep developing the squad.

Re: January transfer window
We need to start creating opportunities and taking shots!
Same as what we have needed for a long time. Unfortunately we will be lucky to get one or two never mind the 3 or 4 or so we need!
Fast, tricky winger
Creative midfielder
Dominant midfielder
Are all imperative.

Re: January transfer window
Add a full back and a striker to that, CC and I wouldn’t disagree. I’d assume though that if we were to bring a few more offensive players in that they’d need to be capable of filling a couple of positions, therefore reducing the numbers needed.
I’m hoping that with Defour back and Brady close, we may start to see more of Vydra. With those two hopefully providing a bit more class on the ball, it could really help Vydra to bed in.
A midfield and attack of
JBG Cork Defour Brady
Vydra
Vokes
Should hopefully provide a bit more creativity.

Agree 100% with DcWat re positions we need filling
Re: January transfer window
A fast aggressive ball winning midfielder and a forward that knows where the net is (a new Charlie Austin). Defour is an excellent player and only just coming back from injury, my only concern with him is his age (30) and he's not the quickest. With our budget it's going to be difficult but hopefully we might have more options this time.

One of each across midfield, left back and striker
Our "feeder" club Brentford have a few who look capable of developing into good young players

Considering our loan signings play the equivalent of 35 seconds per game, why would they bother?CombatClaret wrote:I thought he'd signed, my mistake.

Re: January transfer window
Although a pacy winger would be nice, I'm wondering whether this type of player fits into our system?
I don't think it's any coincidence that our "framework" has looked shoddy this season, and I think the main reason for that is Aaron Lennon. I just don't think he is very good at covering his position. I think if we'd played most of the season with Brady or (dare I say it) Arfield, then we would have been a lot more solid and shipped less goals.
I think this was SD's reason for pursuing Clucas, so he could play the Arfield role. Lennon is good as an option off the bench for the last 30 when we need to stretch the game, but nothing more.
I would ideally like us to pursue a wide player who is a good technician, and can understand the role that is needed. An upgrade on Arfield if you will.
Players like Snodgrass, Clucas, Ward Prowse etc or someone left field from abroad.
Also we need a new long term left back and a strong centre mid if possible.
The striker situation is a strange one, if we get a new striker, then we would have to probably lose one of our 4 strikers, but these type of players don't exactly grow on trees, maybe we'll go back in for Jay Rod?

And if that were to happen it would be the start of SD's downfall. There will always be injured players out and our squad is short on quality cover. Ward-Prowse, Jay Rod and a pacey winger would doFactualFrank wrote:I don't think we'll bring anybody in assuming no more nasty injuries.

Taylor takes a bit of stick on here, but unfairly IMO. I watched how we dealt (or didn't) with Mahrez, Taylor was narrow when Man City started attacking, presumably expecting Lennon to be picking up the winger in the wide position. Then when Mahrez attacked into the penalty area Taylor kept showing him the byline, surely both these defensive tactics are following instructions?

Don’t you think both Brady and Gudmundsson are perfect for those wide technicians who know their position well. Ward prowse would be good though as cover and he can cover CM as well. He could even play the CAM very effectively as well. He’d be like a really improved arfield.Ric_C wrote:Although a pacy winger would be nice, I'm wondering whether this type of player fits into our system?

A good clear out and a quality centre forward , a ball winning midfielder would be good but I think now Vork has Defour back he can concentrate a bit more on that .

Not a chance WBA will let Rodriguez go with them in with a shout of promotion. Seeing as we've only got 5 first team keepers we'd better sign another just to be on the safe side.

Yeah, I was thinking more along the lines of emphasis on Winger rather than pace.SGr wrote:In 2018 if pace doesn’t fit the system then it’s the system that’s at fault.
Of course pace would be an asset and preferable, but a traditional winger such as Lennon is less effective in this system.
Re: January transfer window
Yep i agree, JBG and Brady do fit the system well, hence why we've missed Brady so much. But we do need depth. Lennon isn't the answer. McNeil could be, but it's unfair to throw him in at the deep end.Iloveyoubrady wrote:Don’t you think both Brady and Gudmundsson are perfect for those wide technicians who know their position well. In hindsight, not keeping Arfield for another season was a mistake, but I'm not sure how much in our hands that was.

We are short of a front line striker however - one or two of Vokes, Barnes and Wood can go for me for a significant upgrade (likely to be in the £25m range, unless we can get clever in Europe).

We may aswell leave strikers off the pitch with the severe lack of scraps they are left to feed off.

Re: January transfer window
Certainly a good stop gap option and if he's fit, I'd be tempted to put Gibson there on Sunday instead of Taylor (who I think has had a tough few weeks). But Gibson is really a centre back and whilst he started at left back and can undoubtedly do a job there, I'm sure he ultimately sees himself as a centre back. Taylor doesn't convince me at all defensively, and he's not yet shown he has the athleticism to compensate for that with attacking impetus.ClaretAL wrote:May be Gibbson will step up to this plate.
Another midfield option certainly makes sense and you can absolutely see the argument for someone like Ward Prowse - but in truth, whilst Defour is fit, we're not going to making regular use of that player and once Brady is fit. Whether we need another wide player depends on whether young McNeil is seen as being a real option to play in the second half of the season.
Unless Vydra has gone out of favour already, I think we're fine up front. Vokes, Barnes and Wood all have perfectly respectable goalscoring records at this level.

top level strikers help create as well as score - that's the difference.
We have two woefully out of form (Barnes and Wood) and one who if we are being honest isn't quite good enough for week in week out (Vokes). Plus another in Vydra who looks like being the next tampax Mumby.

Agree with those that suggest a new left-back should be prioritised.
One player I know that has impressed Dyche is George Friend at 'Boro. Possibly at his peak at the moment, although not exactly one for the future.
