Lovely ground. I watched a couple of days from the Fort, the last time we played there, and a couple of days from a box. Superb. Two tier pricing. The locals get in for £1. Ensures that there are plenty in and a great atmosphere. Fabulous country.Buxtonclaret wrote:Just looking on Google maps.
What a place for a cricket ground!

It's a decent idea to have cheap prices for local to boost the gate/atmosphere. I think they do the same in W Indies & I doubt any tourists would complain- home and away crowds at cricket mix freely and tend to embrace each others cultures.
Cant see it catching on here for the ashes next year though.

Re: Sri Lanka v England First Test
The authorities decided that the prices at the World Cup in the West Indies a couple of years ago would be more than they were used to paying really affected the attendances and thus the atmosphere, which the locals create in their own special way. It was such a shame because watching cricket over there is a great experience.LeadBelly wrote:It's a decent idea to have cheap prices for local to boost the gate/atmosphere. Keaton Jennings great knock to get his hundred as England go 363 runs ahead and Buttler looking dangerous.

Re: Sri Lanka v England First Test
Apart from how K J's innings is contributing to the strong position here, this match should do his general confidence in test cricket a lot of good. Hopefully he'll have the confidence levels to back up his general batting ability now and be successful as an England opener- we need somebody there.
The weather forecast at the start of the test was for thundery showers through all 5 days & the draw was by far the shortest odds bet amongst the possible results. It hasn't rained at all yet but the forecast is still the same for the next couple of days. If the forecast was better, England may as well bat on as long as possible but I guess Root & Co will be thinking that they may declare soon to give SL a tester this evening (depending on what weather forecast info they have). Certainly seems like 450 is an unachievable chase here.

Your right about Jennings.
Admit to being a bit doubtful at first. He's looked good today. The right mix of 'shutting out' then taking the runs a good opener needs to have.
He's looked, to my mind, unsure in the past.
Not today.

Re: Sri Lanka v England First Test
Jennings was considered fortunate to be on the tour but he has a good record against spinners so is a good choice for Sri Lanka. He definitely batted well in this second innings.Buxtonclaret wrote:

Definitely better against spin.ClaretTony wrote:Jennings was considered fortunate to be on the tour but he has a good record against spinners so is a good choice for Sri Lanka. He definitely batted well in this second innings.
He struggled a lot against SA last year when faced with good pace bowlers.
Think the only decent score he had was in Mancs, and I remember that not being very convincing.
Hopefully he'll go on from this tour.
We do need an opener.
Not sure what's happened to Hameed.

Agree. Foakes here for the longterm. (Much better keeper than Bairstow).Elder statesman wrote:Surely can't drop Foakes for second test.
It's up to Bairstow now to work at his batting and try to nail down one of those upper order batting slots.

Buxton agreed, yes Jennings struggles against pace, does not know where is off stump is. As to Hameed, I think he is finished, a one season wonder unfortunately.

Re: Sri Lanka v England First Test
Moeen showing his worth again, and 3 wickets for Leach,Rashid very erratic once more.
Herath's final test action he is the last guy to play in the 1990's,not a bad career, ends on a run out.
Hameed needs to score big hundreds at county level before he can considered for England selection, shame because he would be an ideal no3.
England win by 211 runs,Sri Lanka will rue that first day when they couldn't finish England off cheaply.

Re: Sri Lanka v England First Test
Well done to England on finally getting a win in Galle and to Joe Root for his first win overseas, I think.
Good all round performance after a very ordinary start to the match in losing five wickets for 103.
Sad day for Herath in his last test but he has plenty to look back on in his retirement.

Re: Sri Lanka v England First Test
A great all round win with many excellent performances, Root may have to leave fellow Yorkies Bairstow and Rashid out for the next test?!
