Only Bardsley, Walters & Lindegaard now out of contract in the summer and Walters will clearly be leaving

Only a year's extension, presumably to prevent him signing a pre-contract with another club next month and walking away for nothing in the summer. If we want to recoup anything, we'll probably be looking at shifting him in the summer anyway.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick contract extended
Just wait for this to be marketed as "as good as signing a new player". So far this season we have awarded a contract extension to a player who has spent the majority of his time at the club sat in the stands injured and when he does play rarely makes it beyond the 60 minute mark and one who is constantly deemed not good enough to play in his preferred position, so is deployed as a square peg in a round hole playing off a lone striker, with virtually no success. His last goal was almost 4 months ago.
I am missing something if people are seeing these sort of contract extensions as good news. The one area we are woefully inadequate is midfield. We cannot keep hold of the ball, so create very few chances and heap additional pressure onto the defence, resulting in the regular entries in the goals against column. The answer to this problem seems to be more of the same, for an even longer period.

That didn't cause us too much concern last season as we never had the majority of possession anyway.Herts Clarets wrote:We cannot keep hold of the ball, so create very few chances and heap additional pressure onto the defence, resulting in the regular entries in the goals against column.

Happy about this.....but it's an area we still need to strengthen. Playing in a 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 could suit Hendrick quite well imo.

He could only sign a pre-contract with a foreign club. I don't know what the situation is with the potential for a new contract beyond that but I do know the club would be keen to tie him down for longer.DavePTClaret wrote:Only a year's extension, presumably to prevent him signing a pre-contract with another club next month and walking away for nothing in the summer. Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick contract extended
It wouldn't make sense to allow him to walk away next summer. We're already short in midfield so I'm glad he's signed an extension. However, 12 months sounds like a compromise on both sides. If we saw him as an important player surely we'd be offering 2 or 3 years?
Extending Defour's deal was another odd one. He needs to prove his fitness. He's certainly not been fit for at least 50% of his time with us. The guy has class but we might have made an error extending his deal already. With our squad size being what it is, we can't afford to have top players sidelined for this amount of time.

Haven't kept up to date with the rules, but is Scotland still classed as "foreign"? Could've seen Jeff at Celtic.ClaretTony wrote:He could only sign a pre-contract with a foreign club. Good news overall. Now let's see if we can play in his preferred position
and he can get the form back he was showing afore Xmas last year.
We need him and one or two others back to their best and as soon as possible.
Even then it'll be a dog fight me thinks.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick contract extended
Good news, particularly as Defour's fitness cannot be assured. Still room to bring in a couple of midfielders.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick contract extended
For me its good news. I think if this guy got an extended run in a deeper role you would see the true Hendrick. With Lennon out on Saturday and JBG just coming back and Brady a slight doubt would like to see a central three being played with him in it. Or maybe Jeff playing just behind Barnes-last week was awful in terms of attack
There are several good players not getting a game eg we have the second highest goals against and Gibson not made a league start yet.Hes our record signing With the high number of games coming up hope him and Hendrick feature more

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick contract extended
He's a bit marmite is our Jeff but a vital part of our makeup if deployed correctly
its unfair people having a dig towards him has he has carried the can in that supporting strikers roll
He needs to get back settled into his more natural position as his time here has been wasted and none effective.
Played in his natural position there isn't a player at our club better suited than him good bit of business all round by the club if we decide to sell and a good deal surfaces for all parties.
Tying these closes into contracts really is a positive move and stops player either running down their contacts and also gives us more time for maneuver
get jeff in his natural position now then see how we fair
If we decide to sell he can leave and I wish him well but we have to strengthen and get some serious competition into the midfield areas right across the board happy with the extension but we need something to challenge what we have and freshen up with a couple of strong ball winning commanding marshalls we are to lightweight for my liking

I do think he should play this week in a 532 system that should bring the best out of him but if he doesn't try and pass forward looking for assists or goals, his career will fade away.

Re: ARTICLE: Hendrick contract extended
Brilliant news.
Key player for us, and it's a massive boost to get the contract distraction dealt with so that he and the club can focus on the task of pulling ourselves clear of the drop zone.
There's a lot of chat about getting ourselves an athletic, ball winning midfielder and I remember a thread last week commenting we could do with unearthing someone like Doucoure. Jeff has the attributes to be exactly that sort of player and it's pretty unlikely we'll be able to sign anyone with those sorts of attributes who is as ready-made for the Premier League as Jeff is.
So he's not like a new signing, but he's definitely a player from whom we can get a hell of a lot more now he's tied down. I'd love him to sign a longer term deal but we can all worry about that in the summer when we know what division we're going to be in.

Numerous contributors to this thread have stated,if Jeff is deployed in his natural role he can impact the game,so why can't Sean see the bleedin obvious.
Good to tie him down for another year anyway, but he is not and never will be a NR 10.

It took a while for SD to see that Ben Mee was never a left back. Perhaps injuries is the only way it will happen.tiger76 wrote:Numerous contributors to this thread have stated,if Jeff is deployed in his natural role he can impact the game,so why can't Sean see the bleedin obvious.

We're short in midfield now only Cork and Westwood are 100% match fit,Defour is out,Lennon is out,JBG is doubtful, and Brady is still getting up to speed after his lengthy lay-off,Saturday is a free hit so it doesn't matter who features, but the Everton and West Ham home double-header will go a long way to deciding our fate at the end of the season,Jeff could play a major role in these fixtures but only from a CM position.FactualFrank wrote:It took a while for SD to see that Ben Mee was never a left back. If he certainly can't tackle, who was the bloke who made that superb tackle in front of the longside in the last minute against Brighton?BOYSIE31 wrote:No he isn't - not quick not agile and not a passer and certainly can't tackle
I don't think you're right about his pace either - he's an excellent athlete. Fair enough, he's not been entirely consistent for us, and (whilst I don't think he's ever been deployed as a true number 10), that more advanced midfield role hasn't completely suited him, but I think even most of Hendrick's critics agree that the basic talent is there for him to be a very good player - the challenge is to get more out of that talent (how much more depends on your assessment of how effective he has been to date).

Well maybe we have far too many defence minded players as going forward we are nothing but shocking - but each to their own i suppose.
