PC for Fortnite....

Post by ClaretDiver » Sun Dec 30, 2018 7:44 am

I know there are a few gamers on here so I thought I would post this....

A friend of mine is looking for a box to play Fortnite on but wants it on a budget so needs to be a decent spec but not expensive...

Any ideas? I have looked at minimum specs but would rather go for higher to get the best experience....

Go.....

Not sure if there’s an outlet like this in Lancs, but this place is fantastic for recon PCs

Most people usually buy PCs in the hope that they will last longer than a fortnight.

Fortnite isn’t that demanding so you can make something for not a lot. No point making something super cheap though as it’ll be useless for anything else and you may as well get a console

What’s their budget?

Fortnite isn't particularly demanding so you'd be better off with an Xbox One S or a PS4 Slim if you weren't fussed about the functionalities the PC brings. Otherwise you'd be able to build something for about £500 that'll run Fortnite at 1080p w/ a solid 50-60 fps I'm sure. Probably less.

Something based around the nVidia 1050ti

Will play Fortnite on max setting in HD at decent FPS, will give them a little space to explore other games if they.

Something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/CyberpowerPC-W ... B079YZM7D8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If that seems a little pricey for them I'd say go with console or face disappointment with a cheaper PC when they inevitably try something more demanding than Fortnite.

Those are only 2nd and 3rd Gen i5 processors ClaretDiver - you want something much newer really. Give us an idea of budget and people can give you an idea of options.

I've built (100+) and repaired gaming PCs for over 10 years if you want any advice.

To be fair their budget is about that....the £400 mark. I think I am going to suggest a PS4 or X-box One S as someone mentioned above...

For the price that's not too shabby, 16gb of Ram is a nice sweetner even if it's not the fastest, usually you'd be looking at 8gb in that price range. defiantly pay the extra £12 or so quid and get the i5-3470 box which is a year or so newer than the other.

If you just google "i5 3470 gtx 1050 ti" you can see people's video of the gaming experience.

Same goes for the fact its an older processor, you can see comparisons with a quick search, tbh it's not all that big, your going to lose around 10fps compared to a current budget processor.

So long as you know what your getting I'd be happy with something like that as a budget box.

I've got a fairly old laptop (4 years or so) with an Nvidia GTX860 graphics card and it runs Total War(hammer) and Total War(hammer) 2 without issues.

I don't know anything about graphics cards, so I don't know if my card is better than the one you were looking at, but given the age of my machine I'd wager not and it runs it fine so anything it's equal will likely run most new RTS, RPG, 4X etc easily.

Mind you, the best Total War game I've played is Rome 1. Have you played Shogun 2?

With exception of a few expansions I've played every major Total War since Shogun 2 and that's still stands out as one of the best. I should really go back & try Medieval, I've watched some let's plays.

Attilla is good, better that Rome 2. Both Warhammers are cool. Contrary to popular opinion I really enjoyed Empire, modern guns and TW will never work but given the mass ranks of muskets, Canon & cavalry it worked really well.
As ever naval combat was a mess.

Aoe3 being Age Of Empires, right?

I played AoE on PC because I played Warhammer in real life, way back when. I play Total War because I played warhammer way back when. I've only played total warhammer 1 and 2 from the total war series, but AOE was superbly excellent. I haven't played AOE3 (or even 2 I don't think).

Settlers, Settlers 3 (I think I missed a gen), then Blizzard games - Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo took a lot of my time when I was between thirteen and thirty five.

Yes played AOE 3, loved those games back in the day. And while you can create formation it's not quite like having a whole army in TW: Empire
Skirmishers out front, Main battle line, Blackwatch in reserve whilst your cavalry wait concealed in the woods as the enemy march into canon range...

[installs Empire Total War]
