Pope 6 Nothing to do
Tarky 7 out of position, but solid
Long 6
Gibson 7 looks solid and can play
Ward 6
McNeil 7
Defour 6
Hendrick 6
Taylor 7 played ok and in 2 very different roles
Vokes 6
Vydra 6

What a very poor spectacle. Created very little, no zip, no spark and don't think any of the players can be knocking on SD door asking to start games after that.

pope - 6 completely untroubled but wasn't it good to see a massive keeper catch some crosses

tarkowski - 7 looked like he had some good fun at right back

long - 6 fine

gibson - 6 fine

ward - 6 understandably rusty but the run out will have done him good

defour - 6 another who it was good to see back on the pitch

hendrick - 6

mcneil - 7 ran out of steam again but this was another decent showing and on the other side for most of the game

taylor - 6 not really a winger but he did well and put in 3 excellent crosses that should have been finished off

vokes - 6 should have done better with his header

vydra - 6 another who needs games but his pace was a bit of an outlet and he got in two good positions that got us the penalties. also should have done better with his header.

gudmundsson - 6 didn't affect things too much

making so many changes to the team was always going to make things disjointed but the performance doesn't matter in these games, just the result.

the players did well not to lose focus over the var farce and restricted barnsley to zero attempts on target.

the good news is that we've got minutes into the squad's legs and appear to have come through unscathed injury-wise.

as for var, its an absolute farce. very debatable whether vydra is offside but it shouldn't matter anyway, unless they are reviewing every decision in the game. just the foul should be subject of the review. either review everything or nothing and if we're reviewing everything, why bother having a ref on the pitch.
surprised the second pen wasn't overturned for a throw in given the wrong way at the other end of the pitch.

Pope: 6
Tarkowski: 7 - Played well out of position
Long: 6
Gibson: 6
Ward: 6
McNeil: 7* - Always looked to create
Defour: 6 - Would be a 5 but for some great balls
Hendrick: 5 - Nothing performance against Barnsley...
Taylor: 6 - Some good crosses
Vokes: 5.
Vydra: 5 (-1) - Point off for rushed decision making

JBG: 5
Wood: 7 (+1) - Thank god he scored that.

Typically awful cup spectacle. Generous scores as a result of the win.

Pope 8 - Not much to do but punted a few kicks straight out of touch to relieve the pressure and help us regroup
Tarks 9 - Captain marvel performance overlapping wonderfully and duffing his crosses into the first man
Long 8 - Distribution as terrible as ever but was immense against the mighty Barnsley strikeforce
Gibson 8 - Not only a great defender but some classy sideways passing to his fellow defenders
Ward 8 - Looked like he'd never been away even though it was one of the most tense and toughest games he could come back in to
O'Neal 8 - Missed a sitter and no end product but kept possession well with his twisting and turning when under the cosh
Hendricks 8 - Hardly touched the ball but floated around the pitch elegantly and really stepped up to the plate when no one else was willing to take that pressure corner
Defour 9 - Wasnt even trying and still managed to complete at least 3 passes to our own team successfully
Taylor 10 - Beckham like with his swinging crosses and looked a cut above those League 1 Barnsley players
Vydra - Not on long enough to give a mark
Vokes 8 - Hard day against some of the best defenders we've seen this season at the turf but gave it his all and nearly won a header

JBG 8 - Managed not to get injured
Woods 9 - Showed good thinking to take the penalty before the ref changed his mind
Cork - Involved a little more than Vydra but still not on long enough to rate

Dyche 9 - Showed his tactical nous to get us through a really tough tie and pinch a win. Doubt we'll get a harder draw than this for the rest of the competition

Pope 6 untroubled
Tarkowski 7 did well enough in an unfamiliar role
Long 7 usual solid performance
Gibson 6 ok
Ward 6 good to see him back
McNeil 7 Rapidly becoming our main play maker
Hendrick 6 and that’s a generous 6
Defour 7 some good moments, some poor as well
Taylor 7 poor 1st, but did far better in the second
Vydra 8* his movement throughout was the only thing that caused them problems and eventually won us the game
Vokes 4 very poor from Sam

JBG 5 looks rusty

Pope 6 Nothing to do
Tarks 6 Is Lowton injured or is he being sold ?
Long 6
Gibson 5
Ward 5 Good to see him back
Mcneil 7 Just needs to build fitness and stamina. Lot of quality
Defour 6 as Ward
Hendrick 5 Great Championship player ( but no good against D1)
Taylor 7
Vydra 5 How was he ever leading scorer in Champs
Vokes 5

JBG 5
Wood 6

Played bad. Won. Move on.

Because I thought some of our players were poor against inferior opposition, two leagues below us and playing at home. Possibly a little harsh with one or two who I nearly gave a 5. I was a little frustrated at today's performance. But what fecks me off is someone who pokes at other people's ratings but doesn't post their own.

I think I can answer this one. Because we were utterly bobbins against a league 1 outfit.

Also, 1-0 is not comfortable. Aside from that, good contribution

Not a great game or performance. Thought Vydra’s movement and McNeil’s positivity were our main threats. Barnsley weren’t easy to break down and we had a complete new team put together. Glad we are through.

Bizarre. Everyone I spoke to said we deserved to go through. Not a classic though admittadely.

Not sure people are worthy of 4s

Hard to say that was comfortable Lancaster. We wouldn't have scored from open play if we'd have played all afternoon. We shouldn't have to resort to hoofball and set pieces against a team from League 1, who tbh played the better football today.

You don't think it's possible for some players to be 'poor' when we beat a league 1 side 1-0 in what was a poor spectacle?

He wins us 2 penalties, and was due to take the first spot kick, (pretty close call for off-side),he hit the side netting, missed a good headed chance, and then won a 2nd penalty , (which one would reasonably assume he would have taken if he already had 2 goals and we were 2 up).
Is that a performance the warrants 4s and 5s?

Not at all, but 4s do suggest very poor. Fair enough if enough of you think the performances were worthy of a 4. The fact he won two penalties alone suggest that is harsh.

Pope was untroubled and we kept them at arms length and deservedly won.

I guess its all about opinions though!

The definition of 4 is 'poor' not 'very poor' as per the CTs consistent descriptions for the scores. We didn't win two penalties. There was only one penalty.

He was controlled by a 3rd tier centre back, he couldn’t get an easy header on target, completely fluffed another shot, then he missed the target again hitting the side netting, he kept falling over, didn’t link up well and you think that deserves even a 6?

Pope 6 No shots as such but commanded his area
Ward 5 Got game time but rusty
Tarka 8 Looked comfortable for the most part
Long 7 Just steady really
Gibson 7 As Long
Taylor 5 Didn't work last time he played there
Hendrick 3 Weak, inept, no creativity or presence, woeful
Defour 5 As Ward
Vokes 6 poor service but looked slow
Vydra 7 Made the runs but again poor service, got the impression he was trying to hard.
McNeil 8 Always positive just needs to look up at times to see his options.

SUBS. All 6 Wood was probably the most effective

Dyche 4 Weird selections , you may not like the cups Shaun but some of us do and would really like a cup run obviously not at the expense of premier league football but surely we can do better than this

Saw it on a stream which wasn't great.

Thought we did enough to win.

You want to hand out 4s fine

I think sixes and possibly a five for Vokes would have been fairer but all I wanted was us to get through.

All about opinions though

Pope 6

Tarkowski 7
Long 6
Gibson 6
Ward 6

McNeil 7
Defour 6
Hendrick 6
Taylor 6

Vydra 5
Vokes 4

JBG 6
Wood 6
Cork NA (but made an impact in the little time he had on the pitch)

Dreadful, unimaginative performance.

So with reference to your first contribtuion, your judgment appears to be based on there never being any justification for giving a score of 4 simply because we won. Without any consideration given to the nature of how we won, although bizarrely you think we won comfortably. This thread is littered with 5s which is marginally better than a 4 which you think means very poor which is incorrect.

Pope had nothing to do.

That counts as comfortable to me, but hey I guess I'm not you.

Aye because Davies had loads to do

I haven't read any match reports but perhaps you could point me to some neutral ones that say or at least imply we won comfortably

Because he was hopeless - and we spent 11 million in him - no wonder the board will not give him anymore money to spend on average dross
