Newport County

Post by basil6345789 » Sun Jan 06, 2019 5:36 pm

Are on the box just now.
Brought back the memory of them coming to The Turf years ago in FA Cup, singing Bread of Heaven and planting a leek on the centre spot.

I'm pretty sure that was my first game on the Turf. January 25th 1964 we won 2-1. I was 9 years old at the time.

Doing very well, but you feel it's only a matter of time before Leicester get one back here.

The F A Cup is for the Minnows, just as Christmas is for Kids !

Only 20 minutes to go. Come on Newport, we could do with a trip to Wales in the 4th Round !

My dad tells me tales of Newport away, said it’s the only time the police told them they couldn’t gaurantee their safety, whilst bricks were thrown at them

For those concerned about our performance yesterday it's worth remembering that we lost twice to them in Division 4 back in the mid-80s.

Remember going to Newport County, late 70s or early 80s. Havn't a clue of the result but for some reason I recall there was a Fire Service strike ? And the army replaced them ? Who was the Green Godess ?
Hope someone with a better memory could help me with this one.

We would be struggling today in this game. Newports intensity and fight would be too much for us judging how we were yesterday and generally play in the cups. Our tactic of launching long balls just doesnt work against lower league teams and we lack any creative ball player types.

The strike was November 1977 through January 1978. I was in charge of a Green Goddess (it was a fire engine of some vintage)

And yet we won yesterday following a penalty gained as a result of a long kick from Heaton, a headed back flick by Wood and a chase into the area by Vydra.

Leaving Newport aside, 3 of the bottom 4 in the PL knocked out along with the top 3 sides in the Championship.

PL mega millions has given clubs other priorities and the FA Cup is not at the top of that list.

Can't remember to be honest, I would have been on the Bee Hole End with my dad. We always used to go in the enclosure when we played Liverpool or Everton, my dad said they were too rough for us to go in our usual place.

I said we would struggle. We did yesterday..for long periods we were outfootballed and most definitely outfought. I also was commenting on the Newport game. They were closing down quickly and the tempo was quick. Leicester clearly struggled with this in the first half. We would ahve certainly struggled. Newports tempo was higher than Barnsleys.
It worked on one coccasion yesterday..it is hardly a ringing endorsement for our long ball football is it?

That was sensational...the BBC certainly picked the right game to cover. A packed stadium, lively crowd and the underdog holding a slim lead throughout most of the match.

Newport were fantastic and Leicester threw the kitchen sink at them.

That was an old fashioned cup tie. ;-)

Indeed..me neither. That was my point. We would be bullied all over the pitch more than likely. I would prefer a home draw against any non top 6 Prem team. Any team coming here with a point to prove or with any sort of aggression and tempo would mean we struggle. As we did yesterday.

It’s Reshmin Chowdhury. She’s done **** loads of presenting and interviews on various tv corporations all over the world. You might have seen her hosting the fifa world player of the year event thingy in English/French and Spanish.

Then again I’m not so sure what you get to see/hear in Vegas.

I remember going to that game. Just a couple of months short of my 12 the birthday and I was stood in the Cricket Field terrace. They had a decent following after they had knocked Sheff Wed. out in the previous round. We'd beaten Rotherham after a replay at.their place in the 3rd round, a game in which Frank Casper played for the opposition. Our cup run was brought to a halt in the next round at West Ham if I remyember rightly.
Edit: Just checked and we were knocked out by West Ham in the 6th round having beaten Huddersfield at Turf Moor in the 5th round 3-0 in front of nearly 40,000 fans. Ray Wilson was in the Huddersfield team that day.
