Closer to the River Mersey than Liverpool or Everton according to most pub quizzes.

I'd question most pub quizzes.

Both Liverpool and Everton grounds are nearer.

You can question them but they’d still be correct

Edgeley Park was (until County's relegation in May 2011) the closest league football ground to the River Mersey - it is actually closer than Liverpool's Anfield, Everton's Goodison Park or Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park.

You can blame Google Maps then. I'm going off the start of the river and both Anfield and Goodison (nearest east). According to Google, they are both nearer than Stockport's ground.

Edgeley Park is around 1Km from the River Mersey. Anfield and Goodison Park are both around the 2Km mark.

Prenton Park will be closer to the Mersey than either Anfield or Goodison. Of course when Everton’s new ground is built on the docks it’ll be right next to the Mersey so will take Stockport’s (only) claim to fame and ruin pub quizzes for ever!

Old Trafford is only a 100m or so further from the Mersey than Anfield or Goodison.

Yes, it goes through south Manchester. I now live on Merseyside (Wirral) but actually lived closer the the Mersey when I was a student living in a bedsit in West Didsbury, Manchester.

Yes I am in Chorlton, Manchester and I am 300yds from the Mersey....help!

I always thought it was Stockport's ground that was nearest too.
This has got me thinking.....
I wonder if Old Trafford is nearer than Anfield? (can't be much in it?)

See post #16. That seems about right on the maps.

And Edgeley Park is definitely closest; visibly so on Google Maps (and others).

Are you telling me people can see distances down to 100m on a map?
Surely Utd fans can't let the Scousers sing 'Merseyside..Merseyside..etc
without some sort of retort?

When they sing their 'Banks of the River Irwell' song shouldn't it be Mersey?

Crikey which is Old Trafford's nearest river?....I am off to investigate.

Possibly. Or you can use an "as the crow flies" map.

I hope they came 2nd just like in the 90s. we were once jumped outside a pub in stockport. 3 of us and 5 of them. One of my mates was a judo teacher and I wish I had it on film what he did to them. We only went to watch the footy and have a drink but every time we went there there was this hatred towards us but we thought nothing of them. weird.

As always nowadays there were videos flying about from Spoons in Manc.

Stockport bit off more than they could chew with the numbers of Burnley in there.

I wasn’t over there mate, apparently Stockport “lads” got a bit excited and mouthy and didn’t realise how much Burnley was actually there.

Just realised that the OP
had only just joined this board.
That this was his one and only post.
Plus, he gave us all a big clue in his username burnley SK5
SK5 of course being a Stockport postcode for the Brinnington/Reddish areas.
I really should be more observant.
