Gutted, but...

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Tue Jan 29, 2019 10:07 pm

Absolutely devastated with that. Especially a late goal to make it 2-2 from 2-0 two years in a row.

BUT, and despite results of those around is – in context it’s a huge result! A point we realistically didn’t expect to get.

Our front two both work well and score again.
Heaton STILL unbeaten and has another excellent game.
Cardiff lose – probably the most important result of those below us.
We probably now only need 10 or 11 points which are certainly achievable.
We send out a message that we are back (in the league).

Saturday is HUGE. Beat them and we aren’t far off. The late goal may fire us up even more.

Devastated not to win. But it shows there is nowhere we should fear going in this league.

Makes one wonder whether the decision to field a weakened team at weekend paid off.

Hendrick should never have grabbed him, just gave him the option to go down like he'd been shot.
Unlucky with the rebound for their second.
Heaton was immense.
A good point in the end, but somehow it feels like a defeat.
On to the next one.

Played well. Tarks/Heaton superb. Only downside are the subs yet again. McNeil was knackered at 50 mins. We desperately needed fresh legs up top in the last 10 mins.

Gutted too, but considering everybody is supposed to be “Dyche fit,” we don’t half concede a lot of goals at the end of games.

Still ticked off with moving Taylor more central and playing Hendrick at FB.
If we needed more cover centrally get Gibson on and leave your recognised FB against Young.
They just fed him until we cracked.

Gutted too!
Was watching the telly when a friend phoned to let us know we were 1-0
up and then checked later and we were 2-0 up!

Couldn't quite believe it but thought we'd got a win and then....
Didn't expect a repeat of last season so late on too.

But I suppose a point is more than I was expecting and just hope we can do the
business on Saturday against Southampton.

Still think Cardiff and Fulham will come with a push.
Cardiff sounded unlucky to lose at Arsenal and Fulham thumped in 4 against
Brighton after going 2-0 down.

I'd have took a point with both hands at 8 o'clock , so gutted but nobody gave us a snow ball in hells chance. It's a great point and the unbeaten run goes on.

Heatons save, when he hadn't realised it was offside was out of this bloody world. He had no right to get to it. But fair play to Tom!

Funny game football. Currently feeling sick, with the gnawing feeling that we’ve blown another chance to win at Old Trafford.

BUT Cardiff are effectively 2 wins away from us now. Every point is vital.

Keep playing as we are and we’ll be fine.
5 unbeaten in the league

Considering how the team tired in the last 15 minutes is it not conceivable that a more exerting game on Saturday with our key players getting more game time could have led to a much more leggy performance today?

Dyche’s decision has been vindicated, clearly, if you don’t want to admit it then that makes you look a bit silly.

And who said Man City were unbeatable?

Given the game it will always feel like 2 points lost rather than one gained.
But it's a point not many predicted and shows we can still go toe to toe with the big boys and get the odd point on the way.

But 500m man city also rested players - and lost against a struggling newcastle.

Had City won at a canter you may have a point. But they didnt. They lost. And they rested players. And they have far better players than us.

We got the exact same result last season in the exact same way having played Spurs 3 days earlier with the exact same side (except Wood was replaced by Barnes).

If you don’t want to admit that rotating was clearly irrelevant AND that we could have taken Saturday more seriously then that makes you look a bit silly. ;)

Looked goosed but with some games where a team is just defending a hell of a lot I think a substitution can go against a team.

Takes a few minutes to ge into the flow of a game where you’re being hammered and fresh players sometimes have a mistake in them.

Maybe City would have been a bit fresher tonight had they rested more players against us. In any case I don’t really care about Manchester City. I’m talking about Burnley and our small squad which has been heavily impacted by injuries. I think it’s clear that by resting a few of our key players we were able to compete better today.

Edit - worth noting that Solskjaer was saying this week that he would never sacrifice a Cup game for league points. Could it be that their efforts at weekend contributed to their dropped points tonight. The case is building.

As long as we bag 3 points on Saturday this is a vital point towards survival, credit to Utd a month ago we would have seen that game out,but Ole has instilled spirit in them.Shame about Newcastle and Fulham's results but we can only take care of our business,11/15 now with some winnable games around the corner,Barnes and Wood forming a great partnership again, just hope these late goals by Tottenham.Man U,and the dodgy offside call at Watford don't cost us dear in May.

Yeah I get that. Just thought Vydra up top would have given their defence a little less time on the ball once we belted it back to them.

Tonight was the kind of night that sends you down. 4 points lost in injury time in the last two games. Our rivals pulling off “miracle” wins. Not looking good. Which is a real shame given how well we’ve played recently.

I will give up because it’s like arguing with a child. My claim that we wouldn’t have beaten them had we played a stronger team is not me saying they are unbeatable. They are clearly not unbeatable. Barcelona aren’t unbeatable but we wouldn’t beat them at the Camp Nou no matter which 11 of our players we put our.

Hopefully you can comprehend that the two claims are different, and not even subtly.

Us playing any team against them and not being able to win - means you think they’re unbeatable for us .... no matter who we played against them.

The fact that Barca could beat them is irrelevant as we’re not Barca.

I believe Solskjaer was just brushing up his job application - comparing his approach with some other guy who may be interested in the job.

Tonight - the ups and downs of football - brilliant, ecstatic when it ends in a win - feels like a loss when we end with 1 point - feels just the same if we come away with nothing.

Pretty sure we'd all have taken 1 point at 8pm. That's how I'll get to sleep tonight. The point we won, rather than the points win nearly won.

The fact that Barca could beat them is irrelevant as we’re not Barca.
Firstly, the claim was that I said Man City were unbeatable. Not ‘unbeatable for us’, stop moving the goal posts. I said that Man City would have beaten us no matter what team we put out, and based on the last few times we’ve been there, and been hammered, I’ll stand by that. There’s no evidence or statistics to prove that my prediction is wrong. The bookies offering 40-1 for us to win backs that up.

I used winning at the Camp Nou as another example of a team who aren’t unbeatable, but who we also wouldn’t beat.

It’s really not difficult to comprehend so I’m not going to waste any more of my time explaining a simple point which has been clearly laid out.

There’s some fine examples of backtracking on this thread.

Bravo!
