Christmas Day 1965 at Bloomfield Rd. The last ever fixture played on this date in this country. Blackpool 4 v Blackburn 2. Attendance of around 20,000.
Also saw a great FA cup replay at Gigg Lane where Bury beat Rochdale 3-2 on a very wet night. They played us in the next round and knocked us out 1-0

I went to Maine Rd to watch non league Altrincham play Spurs in an FA cup replay back in the late 70's. Absolutely loads there and Alty did play well, but lost!
I also once went to Ewood with a Rovers supporting mate in the mid 70's and saw a top of the table (Div 3!) clash against Plymouth. Plymouth brought absolutely loads of fans and lead 2-0 early on, but ended up losing 5-2.

1978. Liverpool beat Spurs 7-0.
Also a Man Utd v Arsenal game in the late 70s. Stood at the back of the Stretford End: tremendous atmosphere.

Don't remember the exact date but I would guess about 68/69, I could check but I'm too lazy today.
Bloomfield Rd on a school trip from Richmond.
Blackpool v Chelsea, Blackpool were struggling at the bottom of the league.
Blackpool led 3-0 at half time, Harry Thompson who was in goal for Blackpool left the pitch punching the air in delight.
Second half Peter Osgood murdered them, Finished 3-4. A great game for a neutral.

I went to that game, too. A mate of mine,John Davison(Bobsy') was playing for Altrincham. Made a name for himself on Merseyside a couple of years later when he was involved in an incident with Everton winger,John Connolly that resulted in a broken leg for the Everton man.Dark Cloud wrote:I went to Maine Rd to watch non league Altrincham play Spurs in an FA cup replay back in the late 70's. Argentina 2 England 3, Geneva 12\11\2005. Monumental game of football and unbelievable atmosphere. Our newest signing featured in the England squad along with one of our former keepers in goal.

Went with some mates to Villa when Bradford beat them to get to the League Cup final. Went with same lads to Chelsea when Bradford came from behind to beat them 4-2. Two great games but the Villa away game was something else and reminded me of our Derby and York games in '92

Re: What was the best non Burnley game you ever attended ?
One afternoon in the early 90s our game away at Blackpool got called off. Disappointed and stuck for something to do, I decided to go to Everton v Sunderland with my blue-nose mate. Nothing particularly memorable about that game, other than an announcement coming over the tannoy to say the ticket stubs for the game would be a voucher for the cup match against Liverpool should it go to a replay. It duly did and I seized the opportunity to go to my first Merseyside derby.
It was the famous 4-4 draw. What a night that was for the dispassionate observer!

Holland 3 v England 1. Euro88 in Dusseldorf.
I've never seen a game to come close.
Unbelievable skill and commitment from both sides but a Van Basten hat trick settled it.
As a bonus Trevor played.

Old Trafford, 1972
Saw Stoke play West Ham in the League Cup semi-final, second replay.
Bobby Moore ended up playing in goal for 20 minutes. Saved a pen, but the rebound was scored.
Exciting match on a January mud heap of a pitch.
Some great names played that night.

Remember watching that on TV. Swindon 3 up, Leicester pulled back level only for Swindon to grab the winner. Glen Hoddle, player manager for Swindon.Thompson scored one of Leicester's goals. Signed for us a few years later.Rick_Muller wrote:Swindon 4 Leicester 3 in the playoff final.

Liverpool were trailing 2-0 after the first leg. It was the first game of professional football I ever went to, followed shortly after by Burnley 1 - 1 Blackpool in early ‘92.

1st Leg 1997 Eufa Cup final at the Gelsenkirchen Parkstadion ... Shalke 04 won 1-0 .....
We had taken my Step Sons German mate Stefan and his Girlfriend to watch Burnley v Hull and he invited us over and took me to a game... didn't realise until we were on our way it was a bloody Eufa cup final OK only 1st leg but .........
Fantastic atmosphere and let me tell you the German fans know how to party at a match like that.
Stefan got to go to Italy and to Inter for the 2nd leg, and see them beat Inter 4-1 on Pens after the 2nd leg....
Great memory

The best non Burnley game I watched on tv was the european cup final between Real Madrid and Frankfurt at Hampdon Park.
Real won 7 -3 and all ten goals were scored by three players.
Can anyone name them?

Can't match those but my offerings are.
Celtic vs Dundee 2001 Martin O Neill's first season in charge of the hoops, and the atmosphere was electric as they were on the verge of winning the title, they clinched this in their next game,we were also fortunate enough to enjoy corporate entertainment thanks to a family friend who offered us tickets when they couldn't attend, the game by and large was forgettable but when Celtic scored the winner in the last ten minutes the stadium erupted.
My other experience shows the other side of Scottish football.
Partick Thistle-Caley Thistle Scottish Cup 4th round replay,it went all the way to extra time and penalties,Patrick triumphing 4-2 on spot-kicks the game didn't finish until nearly 11 pm,and it was baltic around -10,at the time this was a big shock as Patrick were playing 2 divisions below then Premiership Inverness.

Di Stefano and Puskas for Real Madrid. Just can't recall the Eintracht scorer. I do remember they had a player called Stinka, which for an 8 yr old boy at the time, made me giggle. Eintracht had beaten Rangers 12-4 on aggregate in the semi final (6-1 and 6-3 in Glasgow). Over 130,000 at Hampden Park saw it.

The first of the classic Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle games. 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at the end was pretty spinetingling.
I also saw a Chinese Super League game last year, Beijing Guoan against Beijing Renhe. Not a great game but a fantastic atmosphere and the first time I ever encountered VAR. It made more sense in China than the one we had against Barnsley.

4 of us were also at the Altrincham v Spurs game at Maine Rd. I drove and parked the car, without checking the name of the street I'd parked on. We left 10 mins before the end to avoid being stuck in traffic. Walking from the ground I realised I didn't remember the street we parked on and the others didn't. But we avoided the traffic, because it took 45 minutes to find my car.
My favourite game, was the 1966 World Cup game I saw at Goodison, Korea v Portugal, after leading I think 3-0, they got beat 5-3. Seeing Eusebio play in the flesh (fantastic)

I have 2:
Uefa Cup Final Alaves vs Liverpool the sheer entertainment with it finishing 5-4 to Liverpool.
Germany 1 England 5 marred a little by the atmosphere after the game caused by idiotic England fans but what a game.

My mate is a Sunderland fan and have been to a few of their games and saw them V Newcastle in 2012
We had a “Double Derby” weekend with him coming into our game against Blackpool the day before (won 1-0 with Austin goal)
Newcastle took the lead in first 5mins and had Tiote sent off after about 20mins.
We were sat below the away fans and all you could feel was the hate from above.
Sunderland chucked everything at them but couldn’t find that equaliser, until Ba deflected a shot past his own keeper on 86min

Re: What was the best non Burnley game you ever attended ?
28th April 1973 ..... Meadow Lane, Nottingham, and I was 9 years old ...
My Dad, a lifelong County fan took me along, last game of the season, 23,613 turned up and County clinched the 2nd promotion spot beating Tranmere Rovers 4 - 1. County's manager was an eccentric nutcase called Jimmy Sirrell, and they played some great stuff, with Don Masson, Brian Stubbs, David Needham, and Kevin Randall ( last I heard, was scouting for us ! ) in the side. Les Bradd was the Centre Forward, Roy Brown ( resplendent in a flat cap ! ) kept them out...
County lost 2-4 at home to Oldham Athletic, on 25th November 1972, and after that did not concede another home League goal in 12 games, until Tranmere made it 2-1 on that day. County won 11 and drew 1 at home in that 5 months, with the goals tally being 21-0 !
2 points for a win in those days, no play-offs and the side that missed out by finishing 3rd .... Blackburn Rovers !!

'eccentric nutcase called Jimmy Sirrell'
He certainly was. He came out with the classic quote to supporters who wanted entertainment something along the lines of 'well don't watch us then, you're better going to the circus'.

Liverpool v Nottingham Forest in 1968/69, Forest (bottom of the league) won 2-0 against Liverpool (top of the league) with both goals scored by Ian Storey-Moore.
Always remember stood at the bus stop waiting to get back into Liverpool after the game and some woman was stood in the queue with a radio which was blasting out the football results which included Arsenal 2 Burnley 0. A lot of results were down to the pools panel because there had been loads postponed. When it got to the Liverpool game, you could hear LIVERPOOL 0 NOTTINGHAM FOREST 2 after which this woman shouted: "They should have played ours on the f****** pools panel."

At Old Trafford 7th October 1967, against Arsenal. In the Stretford End. It stunk from the great unwashed.
Thoroughly entertained by Dennis Law (MUFC Scottish striker) and Ian Ure (Arsenal Scottish stopper) who, shall we say tested each other regularly, and then squared up and started exchanging blows. Amazingly the Ref. sent them both off- not a popular decision on the Stretford End.
Didn't go back.

Rossendale Utd v Stafford Rangers fa cup 4th qualifying round 1971, Stafford were the best non league side in the country winning Fa trophy and northern prem that season, Rossy were winning 3-1 in the 2nd half before Stafford pulled it back t0 3-3 then Rossy scored 3 in the last 5 minutes to win 6-3. Fantastic finish to a cracking game. Some cracking characters around then Fred Eyre played for Rossy and mentioned game in his book kicked into touch one of he funniest football books ever.

Loved Fred Eyres book that tale about playing table tennis at City for 6d and the loser threw his tanner under the table. So the winner went and got a hammer and nail and nailed it there forever still tickles me.dr dre wrote:Rossendale Utd v Stafford Rangers fa cup 4th qualifying round 1971, Stafford were the best non league side in the country winning Fa trophy and northern prem that season, Rossy were winning 3-1 in the 2nd half before Stafford pulled it back t0 3-3 then Rossy scored 3 in the last 5 minutes to win 6-3. Dortmund fell short of a UEFA Cup spot by 2 points,if they had won their last game they would have qualified on goal difference.(lost at Stuttgart I think)
They weren't quite the power in those days that they have been over the past decade but in the 3 Der Klassiker games at Dortmund that I was able to attend they didn't lose.w1 d2

A couple of Rossy Utd games that I went on that are worth a mention:
FA Cup games. We were drawn at home to Bolton Wanderers and played it at Gigg Lane where we took the lead. Fantastic feeling until Bolton thugs came round our end and started trouble. It ended 4-1 to Bolton.
Another FA Cup game was Rossy v Shrewsbury when I thought we’d scored an equaliser from a corner with the last kick of the game and started leaping in the air. Everyone began drifting to the exit and I then found out the ref had blown up as the corner came in!

I was on that match with claretgimmer. A Bobby Grimshaw rocket from the edge of the box. Ref blew after Bobby had hit it. Graham Turner scored Shrewsburys winner.Claret wrote: Another FA Cup game was Rossy v Shrewsbury when I thought we’d scored an equaliser from a corner with the last kick of the game and started leaping in the air. The best women's match I ever went to (and there aren't many) was the Island Games final, Faroe Islands 5 Aland 4 after extra time, in the Isle of Man in 2005. (I'm willing to bet I was the only poster from this board to be there.)

Strange game. We were drinking with Shrewsbury fans in the Blue Bell before the match - buying each other pints, etc - then got assaulted by them on the ground! May have been because I was a bit tipsy and fell into a Shrewsbury fan, accidentally nutting him.Tricky Trevor wrote:I was on that match with claretgimmer. What a sod that ref was.

England v Turkey at the Stadium of Light, amazing night and atmosphere .. Beckham and Vassel scoring in a
2-0 win .. Went to a League Cup game with a couple of Bolton friends away at Notts County .. Notts scored 5
goals in about 7 or 8 minutes, there were folk coming on the ground to be told they are 5 nil down !! Some turned
round and left !!

1985: European Cup Winners cup Everton v Bayern Munich
It's a game firmly entrenched in Everton folklore. An absolute wonderful night at Goodison Park capped off by Trevor Steven scoring the last goal.
Most of my friends are Evertonians and I was dragged along that night to witness a superb display of attacking football, with more than a hint of thuggery, which saw Everton into the cup winners cup final which they eventually went on to win.

Euro 96, the semi final between England and Germany. We eventually lost, of course, on penalties but football at its finest.

No one has mentioned England world cup final in 66 - my grandfather was present at that one, he won a works raffle to win the tickets, at least that was the story he told us all when we were little.

December 1975, I took my mates girlfriend to watch Spurs v Liverpool. She was, and still is a Scunthorpe fan who when Keegan went to Liverpool also started to follow them but still, I must say, to this day retains a season ticket for Scunny. As I had a couple of Spurs fans we all went together and ended up on the Shelf watching the game. It was very entertaining watching a lone Liverpool girl fan jumping up and down on the Shelf as Liverpool ran out 0-4 winners. I thought at one point I was going to get a thump.
