WH Smiths in Skipton

Post by Rodleydave » Thu Mar 14, 2019 3:56 pm

I called in today to see no BFC books on the shelves which surprised me as there is a decent Burnley fan base in the town.
How many on UTC live in or near Skipton.

My girlfriend lives in a village between Skipton and Keighley. I was in the local pub there the other week watching some footy and spotted a couple of blokes in Leeds shirts, another in a Bradford City shirt and then by the pool table were a group of p*ssed up young lads chanting the Johann Gudmundsson song. A real mix!

I presume they were locals, Steeton's not exactly the sort of place you'd go for a day out.

I think there is a decent Burnley fanbase there.

On one of our visits to Skipton when the street market was on we noticed a stall selling "keep calm and support Burnley" posters (along with a few other teams) so I purchased a couple of the Burnley ones to send to some ex pat Claret friends.

Anyway, after I'd paid and the lady was putting them in a bag for me I heard her remark to her fellow stallholder that they should have bought more of the Burnley ones as they were selling a lot quicker than the Leeds and Man Utd ones :D

All the BFC books there have been shoplifted and burned by Leeds fans. It's a purge

I live in Skipton. I have supported Burnley for 50 years. I used to live slightly nearer to Burnley than I now do. Skipton is 18 miles from Burnley, Bradford is about the same and Leeds quite a bit further. There are at least 4 more Season TIcket holders living within 50 yards of me, and there are hundreds of us in the town. The same goes for Settle and all the villages between the two towns. It shouldn't be a surprise - we support our local team. I live next door to a Blackburn fan - he's a Skipton man but supports Rovers because his dad does, which is fair. A die-hard Guiseley fan lives nearby. I don't know any Leeds fans here but occasionally see their badge on cars. Lots of people wear Claret and Blue around town - it's rare to see anything else football-wise.

Gargrave has a high proportion too as seen by the flag as you cross the canal on the Skipton side :D

4 season ticket holders in my Village plus a few other part timers...

In my local we have PNE, WBA, Blackpool, Leeds, Manure, Liverpool, Chelski. The ex - landlord of 'The Maypole Inn' Robert is a Coventry fan.... can be fun on a Saturday having a post match pint and the banter :)

3 season ticket holders in the Bob Lord, I know of. 2 sat right behind me, plus Clarets books publisher, the Rev David Wiseman.

I also used to think it was odd, when driving back to Burnley after an away game via Skipton, the traffic police would be out in force at all the junctions, which I presumed was to stop Clarets fans stopping in Skipton for a few beers on the way home?

Three more here Dave. There are a good number of both Burnley and Leeds fans in Skipton. Decent amount of Bradford fans also in town. W H Smiths in Skipton does normally have plenty of choice, perhaps their stock is currently low or have decided not to keep as many?

They haven't had Burnley books for a while and its something to do with distribution and suppliers which seems to be complicated thing. Am hoping to rectify this along with the publisher of currently the Tim Quelch books, Phil Bird, and mine, plus the new Bob Lord that also involves Mike Smith. It just seems daft in there that you can see a decent range of football books, Merson, and all the usual suspects, but not a BFC book in sight.

Anybody who calls in the shop, the manageress is called Charlie and it would help if you just happened to say to her it would be
good if you started to stock Burnley books.

I think the lack of books in there probably says a lot about WH Smith. Over the years it seems to have become a bit of a summat and nowt store, lagging behind the times and stuck in a rut. I think they rely on outlets in airports and railway stations to generate most of their profits. I am surprised that they seem to perfom well financially despite seemingly being stuck in the 70s and 80s (for thosof us who remember that far back). Nothing seems to have changed.

I'm from Skipton and followed the clarets for over 55years, there are more Burnley fans in Skipton than the other teams.
Gargrave has a big following as well with around 15 that go away with Earby clarets most games.
All the local villages around, Embsay, Cononley, Cross Hills etc have a large fan base, so even though we are in Yorkshire, Burnley is the No 1 to us.
