Harper would have been in his 20s back then, think he's in his 70s now and still touring great effort.BurningBeard wrote:Hats off to him.

Nirvana in 1991 at Manc Academy. They were promoting their first album Bleach. They were awesome, but I don't think anyone there would have predicted that within a couple of years they would be one of the biggest bands in the world.

Re: Roy Harper
I haven't seen Roy Harper since the 70s, I still like his old stuff though. He's drifted in and out of being "known" throughout his career.
Another from that era who I'll be seeing this April for the first time since 70s is Michael Chapman. I like his new stuff just as much as his early stuff (which I still have on vinyl). He's also drifted in and out of being "known" throughout his career but seemingly fairly resurrected for the last couple of years. He's playing near me on his current tour which also features BJ Cole on pedal steel & Bridget St John on backing vocals.
Chapman's singing voice (never that great) is a bit "lived in" nowadays but his guitar playing is outstanding.

Saw him at Knebworth, '79.
And what a line up they had there!
Saw him again at Stonehenge, mid 80s.
Sadly someone I've never seen in a smaller indoor venue.

I became a ticket collector early 80s. It saves some arguments about who, where, when.
The Herd at Harrogate my first known band but my second was Led Zep at Newcastle City Hall about November ‘69.

I started keeping tickets (gigs & sports events) c 20 years ago, wish Id kept all the earlier ones.I became a ticket collector early 80s. It saves some arguments about who, where, when.
Unfortunately, though, a lot of the gigs I get to now have e-tickets so (for your extra quid or two admin fee) you get some paper with a bar code that you have to print at your own expense.

Re: Roy Harper
My first was the Big Day Out, MK Bowl, 1999 - Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Sepultura et al - as a green 15 year old.
Went with £20 thinking it would be enough for the whole day, spent a tenner of it in the services on the way down and managed to afford three bottles of water for the entire day.
Within minutes of arriving two blokes offered us some 'tabs' and we were like 'nah, we haven't brought our guitars.'
To be young and naive all over again....

Dire Straits "Live in 85" at the NEC Birmingham. A mate had tickets and someone else dropped out so I was offered it and really enjoyed it. I was a late starter on the live music scene!
THE BEST I've ever seen is Bruce Springsteen, several times. Absolutely amazing!!

They were at my first gig, supporting Status Quo, Bradford St George's Hall, something like 1972/73. Wouldn't have gone out of my way to see the Quo a year or 2 later, but enjoyed it at the time. And Slack Alice about whom I remember very little except for the singer waving about some kind of fake feather boa or similar...

Re: Roy Harper
First gig was Elvis Costello & The Attractions in 1978 at Leicester De Montfort Hall - great night! I saw Costello 7 times between 1978 and 1982.
I used to like the way bands named the tours after whatever album they had out at the time - In 1981 Costello had just released Trust so it was 'The Tour To Trust' - In 1982 Imperial Bedroom was released so we had 'The Bedrooms of Britain' tour
