What's Burnleys strength?

Post by Quickenthetempo » Sun Mar 17, 2019 1:51 pm

Every team and manager always has a strength that stands out.
Some defensive, some attacking, counter attacking, possession, good in the air or just plain organised.

Which, in your opinion is our strength?

Our togetherness I suppose, we haven't much else.

I'm not sure two promotions and a relegation on a CV is a strength in a league full of top managers with all sorts of honours.

As a club our main strength seems to be to have a healthy bank balance, which apparently to many is why we exist as a club. Forget football or actually trying to WIN anything, let's just get rich. Well, after all you don't actually have to buy players do you, they just fall out of trees. Keep the money in the bank lads.

Knowing when our midfield needs strengthening. Not. Its already put us down once and possibly will again.

According to Mr Garlick there's only 24m in the bank, not getting us very far in today's market even if we do survive, just a bit baffling where the rest has gone though, considering we were being touted as one of the richest in Europe not too long ago.

If we have only 24m in the bank (or invested elsewhere) then people should start asking some very serious questions of our directors. Burnleys forecast for 2017/18 alone from PL money was 120m (see Planet Football - breakdown of PL earnings). We pay the worst wages in the PL and don't buy players. Gawthorpe didn't take it and neither will the new stands. They even have the audacity to ask for volunteer stewards. So if those figures are correct maybe we should be mindful of where the money IS going. Perhaps if it were looked into it might explain why we don't even try to compete in the transfer market. Something doesn't add up. I'm not saying anything illegal is going on - far from it - but maybe the directors are 'doing quite well' from it all.

One or two people who seem to be in the know when it comes to club finances have said wait until the accounts are published in a few weeks time. They suggest that the figure of 24m is on the low side. By a long way.

I think you'd always say we're organised, apart from a bad spell early in the campaign.

We're also very good at exploiting any vulnerability/lack of organisation in the opposition back 4. Unfortunately, we've come up against some well drilled sides recently.

I personally think all our strengths, team spirit, togetherness, work rate, comaradarer, toughness, grit, determination and sheer bloodimindines have all but evaporated.
We aren't the fastest, we certainly aren't the most skillful, we definitely aren't the most creative but we have survived by the organisation of the above strengths.

This season, through a variety of reasons, Hart, Europe team choice, Mee's standoff & wage rise etc have eroded everything we have worked for.
We were doomed until Heaton came back in and created a mini revival but that has now disappeared.
Witness the fury of Mee when Brady made that backpass, witness the arguments between Tarks & Mee with the second goal.

Dyche has run out of steam and the players are now loose cannons.
Two choices - change 6 or 7 players during the summer or change the manager.

Up until this season I would have said our realism - or our 'authenticity' to use one of Sean's favourite words. Sadly I think that maybe we started to believe the hype this year. The Championship is littered with clubs who thought they'd established themselves in the PL.

Hopefully our strength this year is our superior know-how to keep our heads above water when it comes to he crunch. Going into next season let's hope it's the self-awareness to realise the squad needs an overhaul and the footballing philosophy has to adapt as we seem a long way off the pace in terms of being competitive in a rapidly evolving environment.
