Speed limiters on new cars from 2022 in the EU.

Good idea, especially in built up areas.
It can be over ridden when over taking is required etc, but it just means if you're caught speeding when not over taking its just because you want to be speeding.
It's apparently already on the Ford S-Max, but even being out of the EU, they'd still be fitted to cars sold over here.

I remember reading about this a few weeks ago as I saw an article on Facbook. But it mentions that the driver can bypass the speed limit simply by pushing harder down on the pedal, which kind of defeats the object.
Also, what will the Government do to make up the fall in speeding fines?

Sounds exactly like the speed limiter function you can already use on some cars, where you set the speed you want to limit yourself.
I use it when going through 50 zones on the motorway. Set the thing to 50 and just keep the accelerator pedal gently down. Like a DIY cruise control.

On Friday my satnav had me driving through a filed near Skipton, because there weren't enough satellites within range to get a good signal. I wonder what my speed limit was?

That's what the Express front page was going with today.
By the looks of things it won't matter if we leave or not - for ease the limiters will be fitted to all cars shipped to Europe anyway so we'd end up with them.

As someone who has recently been on a speed awareness course and also someone who never knowingly speeds I welcome this and I have often wondered how long it would be till in came in. Where I live (MK) I can still drive "fast" and not break the limits so it wouldn't really affect me until I drove to more unfamiliar roads where this technology would be very useful.

HGVs have had for decades Rick!from a technical perspective I can, for example the car in front (the Toyota ) has a slightly different calibration than your car and you are constantly gaining and slowing off in a cycle without the ability to over take without switching off the limiter and flooring it to go past, then having this recorded on your black box as an excessive speed event, which would go against you in the event of an accident. In reality, you wont get there any faster by getting in front, but the pure frustration of going 100 miles stuck behind a car with a different calibration would do my head in.
Its going to cut down on deaths big style, which is a really, really, really good thing.

I can only assume most would be reading from GPS style system, but regular checks on the system would be required.
The same checks are required for lane assist cameras and most people are ignorant of the fact that if you have certain work carried out on cars with lane assist they need to be calibrated again afterwards or insurance could potentially be invalid in the event of an accident.

I had a second hand Master van last year with a 70 mph limiter on it. It was absolutely brilliant for on the motorway, to be able to drive without the worry of checking your speed was great, they aid concentration.

In terms of your second comment - this will not cut deaths big style [sic] I argued successfully (as the instructors agreed) at my speed awareness course that speed is only one of many factors that can cause accidents - most of the others fall under the category of "stupidity"... using your phone; eating; smoking; distractions (kids in the car etc); all the things that are not driving the car can be included in that.
Yes, this will help reduce deaths, but I fear that many will rely upon the tech too much and be easily distracted more and have more accidents (within the speed limit!).

Will encourage lazy driving. I would prefer tougher driving tests and improving driver awareness. The majority drive well but we need to pander to the minority that don’t so we look to be doing something good. I can understand it in a built up area but don’t support it on the open road. I know up someone who fell asleep using an automated car driving system. Think this could encourage more of the same.

The lorries would be going at 56mph. That tiny difference is, usually, down to differences in tyre wear. A bigger problem is those companies who have decided to reduce fuel expenditure by limiting at 54, 52 (Sainsbury's & Asda) or 50 (Tesco). It's a bigger issue when someone driving along clearly has an issue overtaking a lorry, takes a few mins to think about and then actually doing it thus creating a tailback behind them of people who've no issue driving past a lorry

I use cruise control on a regular basis, eg setting it at 50mph in a 50mph zone, I never use the speed limiter.

Absolutely. It should be part of the test. I can drive and choose not to, so legally I'm allowed to tear arse up and down the M65 or whatever and no way should I be allowed to. I passed my test 10 years ago and stopped driving 12 months later. I can buy a car tomorrow and go out driving wherever I want. That shouldn't be allowed. Part of the problem is that some people wont overtake anything. Ever.

Dickhead driving does. And driving to the wrong conditions does. Speed doesn't kill. Granted crashing at speed is obviously significantly more dangerous.

My parents never told me DONT smoke, it was always I would be UPSET if you smoked. Same message just explained in a different way. And probably one of the main reasons I never did it. More out of fear of upsetting my parents. (Along with knowing you would have to be absolutely stupid to want to take up a smelly, unhealthy expensive habit).
God knows why anyone starts.
But usually if a parent, teacher, or other says DONT do it. Chances are, you will!
