Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
Heaton 8. Little to save. But commanded his box and back four very well
Bardsley 8 excellent defensively.
Tarks 8 dominated them
Mee 7 a couple of hairy moments in posession but great defensively
Taylor 8 brilliant going forwards and pretty good defensively
Hendrick 6 didnt really offer much and lost it cheaply a few times. Struggled to get involved.
Cork 6 OK but has defintely lost any pace he did have
Westwood 8 a real ratter in midfield and decent on the ball. Alwas involved and wound them up
McNeil 9 (+ 1 for goal) what a talent. So confident and composed. Popped up again when we needed him
Wood 7 took his goal very well. Linked up nicely at times. Decent perfoemance
Barnes 6 got stuck in but didnt really threaten going forwards
Overall fairly similar performance to leicester. But shows the margins.

Off a stream.Can’t remember if that’s allowed.
Heaton....7. 1 good save, little else to do.
Bardsley...7 defensively sound but nothing going forward. I don’t blame him, it was get it left to Taylor & McNeil.
Tarks.......8
Mee........8..MoM
Taylor......8 carries the ball so well but we still never see any product. Defensively sound.
Hendrick..6 see Bardsley. Not his fault but he was left to run around like a headless chicken.
Westwood..8 another smashing performance.
Cork........7 a lot better than recently
McNeil......8 just gets better every game
Barnes......7 the ref gave him nothing all day but he doesn’t help his cause.
Wood........7 missed an open goal for our first but contributed.

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
Heaton 7 Only had to make 1 routine save and 1 catch
Bardsley 6
Tarks 9 Outstanding against a dangerous team
Mee 7
Taylor 6 Surprised by some of the high marks today, thought he was given a torrid afternoon by Traore. Much better after he was subbed
Hendrick 5 Not really in game
Cork 6
Westwood 7 Tough job in midfield which he did well
Mcneil 8 Thought he was a bit off the pace defensively when Taylor needed help but top quality assist and Goal
Wood 7 Very sharp for first goal and worked hard without any end product
Barnes 6
A must win game which we WON.

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
Heaton 8. One decent save but controlled the box and his back 4 very well
Bardsley 7 Steady at the back if a bit "cowboy" going forward
Tarks 8 Sublime tackling and cool as beans in the box with a great block
Mee 7 Proper Ben Mee performance brave defensively with the dd bit of wobbly distribution thrown in
Taylor 8A nother excellent game from the ever impriving Taylor, soem good raids forward
Hendrick 5. Just struggled to get involved i thought though no lack of graft.
Cork 6 I like Corky but he's getting caught out a bit
Westwood 8 Good game harried them constantly,he could be great with a high class player alongside
McNeil 8 Cracking goal and nice to have a bit of class at last
Wood 7 One of his better allround shows nice link up and of course his goal
Barnes 6 Did his thing and had them flouncing and crying but a bit easy to go down himself
Reminded me of the Leics performance really but this was never in doubt.

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
Heaton Nothing to do
Bardsley 7
Tarkowski 8
Mee 8
Taylor 9 some great blocks, and good going forward
Hendrick 5 hand on heart cant remember him doing anything of note, good, or otherwise at either end of the pitch ( give him a go in the middle )
Westwood 8 does it most weeks now
Cork 6
McNeil 8
Barnes 6
Wood 6
A poor game to watch, other than McNeil's moments of magic it was a drab affair with neither team creating chances as such. You can see why wolves are where they are as they look good in possession with short sharp touches, luckily for us Troure ( sp ) took the wrong option
every time.
We've played better and lost, so I certainly ain't complaining.
A massive 3 points, but I wont be going out my way to watch the highlights.

Superb defensive display, put it all on the line and frustrated the very good players of an in-form Wolves side.

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
Heaton 6 nothing to do
Bardsley 7 did what he needed to do and what we’d expect our full back to do
Taylor 7 kept going manfully agaisnt ATs pace, both him and McNeil didn’t know what to do for a good 25 mins second half as wolves overloaded that side, not necessarily their fault though.
Tarks 8 awful first twenty then exceptional and 3 pieces of defending second half helped win that game
Mee 8 mom consistently solid
Hendrick 6 will get pellters but his discipline was crucial and came narrow to help nullify the Portuguese two a few times. Also looks to be positive in possession. That aside it’s not enough to say he was better than what I’d expect.
McNeil 7 all over shop defensively second half (like Taylor not solely his fault) but scored a beauty and set up the other with a wonderful ball
Westwood 8 very close to mom for me. Was everywhere, used the ball well. if you don’t know you’d have had him as the Interntional midfielder with a whole host of honours.
Cork 5 thought he did bits well but I just want a bit more from him (might be being harsh here)
Barnes 5 battled well some good hold up/ link play first half but no goal threat (again) And was pretty meh
Wood 7 timed his run perfectly for the opener (own goal) ran the channels well, held the ball up etc.

A win by hook or by crook, but I couldn't give a shiny $hit how wins are achieved at this stage of the season. Tarkowski was back to his imperious best and I thought both Mee and Taylor were superb too. A special mention for our "Teenage Rampage " who is rarely anything other than a delight to watch, enjoy him whilst you can because at this rate of progression he wont be with us much longer.
A massive win for us today

Appreciate the feedback. Thought he was dreadful again today.pushpinpussy wrote:wood 5. goes to show you know nothing about football.
Lucky to get the goal, could easily off been the post and goal kick. Free header from a few yards, tried to make a pass instead of a shot.
Lacks a strikers instinct and the balls to take a shot - would rather pass it.
Perhaps you are just happy he managed to avoid being offside today?

Heaton 7
Bardsley 7 - good defending but really snagnates any kind of football down the right
Tarkowski 8 - imperious
Mee 8 - likewise
Taylor 8- been consistently our best player for a while now
Hendrick 6 - nothing of note but hasn’t got anything to link up with down that side
Cork 5 - ponderous and brushed aside too easily
Westwood 8 - much more tenacious and passing seemed more crisp than Cork
McNeil 8 - really hope we get the chance to see him and Taylor again down the left next season they look a real threat. Excellent goal.
Barnes 6 - Boly brushed him off. Would have liked to have seen Vydra
Wood 6 - marginally better than Barnes and was involved with the first goal
Bardsley 7 - good defending but really snagnates any kind of football down the right
Tarkowski 8 - imperious
Mee 8 - likewise

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
Far from our most fluent performance, but we dogged it out and were pleasingly resilient against a technically very good side.
Heaton - 7 - A virtual spectator for the most part, but steady enough, and quickly out to tidy up once or twice, although not for the first time recently his kicking was a bit wayward.
Bardsley - 6 - Defended the back post expertly, but - whilst he was generally pretty well covered - he looked a tad suspect when Wolves ran at him, and once again the limitations of his forward game were obvious when he did break out.
Taylor - 7 - Had a rocky 15 minutes when Traore ran at him freely and we offered him precious little cover, but he did what he could to manage that threat and he was otherwise pretty sound defensively. Tidy in possession.
Tarkowski - 9 - Pretty much flawless defensively, with one brilliant block when he stayed on his feet rather than diving in early in the second half the highlight - and his dominance in the air was epitomised by the assist he'll presumably claim for McNeil's goal.
Mee - 8 - A couple of dicey moments in possession, but other than combined superbly with Tarkowski to create a wall that Wolves had no answer to.
Westwood - 7 - Not his finest game in possession, but he was once again full of energy and dynamism, and his reading of the game was a key part of keeping Wolves at arms length.
Cork - 6 - Looked a bit hangdog at times, as though he was having to push himself to the limits to keep going, but keep going he did and defensively he and Westwood provided an effective shield to the back four.
Hendrick - 6 - Nothing to speak of in possession, when he was guilty of giving the ball away a bit cheaply on occasions - albeit with a lack of options ahead of him as we focused our movements down the left - but did a sterling defensive job, and it was no coincidence that once again our opponents danger from full back came exclusively down the opposite side.
McNeil - 8 - Quiet for the most part, but we'll certainly take quiet games when he contributes a sweetly struck goal and an assist. Other than that early free kick, his dead ball delivery was a tad disappointing by the high standards he's set himself recently, and there were times in the second half when he left Taylor alarmingly exposed defensively, but in the end it was his two moments of sheer quality that settled the tie.
Barnes - 5 - Got very little from the referee, but not for the first time recently he was more effective when disrupting the opposition's possession than when in possession himself, and had we not had the lead we'd probably have been crying out for more subtlety.
Wood - 7 - Lovely movement and finish for the opening goal (even if it ultimately goes down as an own goal), and his link up play was generally more progressive than Barnes'. Even if other sights of goal weren't forthcoming, it was his run across the front that created all the space for McNeil's winner.
JBG - not on long enough but helped us to run down the clock.
What this game demonstrated was the importance to us against well drilled teams of the first goal - both in settling us, and in forcing opponents to come out and play. We looked far more comfortable today being able to sit in for long periods without the ball, rather than having to force the pace. In truth apart from both goals, we rarely threatened to produce even half a chance, and we were alarmingly wasteful with possession at times. But we defended well, kept our shape and kept Wolves at arms length - apart from a 10-15 minute period when Traore threatened to make toast of Taylor and created a couple of half chances. All in all, it added up to a pretty turgid affair.
We need to be better in possession, but this sort of resilience without the ball was heartening and in truth if we do stay up, the significance of the result will be remembered long after we've forgotten that we didn't play especially well, and that the game as a whole was a pretty dull.

I never read the previous post before giving my marks out, has I don't want to be influenced.
I can't believe how anyone would give Hendrick a 5, he was excellent today. His performance was incredibly disciplinened, and his contribution was one of the reasons why we kept a clean sheet

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
Heaton 7 - little to do but more assured
Bardsley 6 - we offered very little down the right
Taylor 8 - he had a slow first half against Traore but was superb second half with some terrific last gasp clearances and blocks
Tarkowski 7 - some really poor moments but lots of brilliance
Mee 9 - his best performance of the season, one of those days when he would stop everything almost single handed
Westwood 7 - totally outnumbered when out of possession but battled well and used his superior energy to make up the difference
Cork 6 - also outnumbered when Wolves had the ball and had six in midfield
Hendrick 6 - solid but did not offer much
McNeil 8 - a moment of quality just when we needed it (although we had already weathered the storm)
Barnes 5 - owned by the CB and not helped by the ref
Wood 6 - bizarre that we left two up against three centre backs but hadn’t realised Crouch was absent so a bit more understandable
Gudmundsson 7 - saw the game out very professionally and capably
The best and worst of us today. We were back to being better than Wolves at both ends of the pitch so deserved our win, even though they dominated the midfield. They made two mistakes, and McNeil exploited the second beautifully, with a shift of his feet and finish worthy of the best. It was the kind of finish one of the top six come up with regularly.
We struggled with our formation because they dropped five back in a line when we had the ball and out five across midfield when they had it. We aren’t playing the ball fast enough to switch the play and exploit the space they gave us, so laboured for the most part.
The upshot is that Cardiff are now in deep trouble. They have to beat us in 2 weeks, and get more besides. I haven’t seen they are capable of that so if we stick to our method we will be OK.

Whilst I don’t agree with you assessment on Wood everyone is entitled to their opinion. However what I find absolute mind blowing is that you rated Barnes better than him and by two whole rating points. A striker who offered nothing but nuisance value first half and little if anything second half and zero goal threat throughout.Burnleyareback2 wrote:Appreciate the feedback. Thought he was dreadful again today.
Lucky to get the goal, could easily off been the post and goal kick. Free header from a few yards, tried to make a pass instead of a shot.
Lacks a strikers instinct and the balls to take a shot - would rather pass it.
Perhaps you are just happy he managed to avoid being offside today?

Felt for the strikers, poor service again just the long hoof ball up front. It was a grind which our situation probably contributed to, but what a massive and just about deserved 3 pts.

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
We scored really early, and then defended well, then scored against the run of play and then saw out the game really, really well.
hard watch, but those three points put us back in the pack trying to avoid the drop. Still going to be tough though, but we've arrested that worrying decline, but we can't afford to let our standards drop again.
Heaton 7
Bardsley 6 - offers as much as I do in my seat going forward, though he's very solid defensively
Tarkowski 8 - got better and better as the game went on
Mee 8 - as Tarks
Taylor 8 - did well but struggled a bit for pace (not a surprise against Troare)
Hendrick 6 - very quiet on the ball, but very good off it
Cork 6 - worked his socks off, but he's getting closed down so quickly and isn't adjusting fast enough
Westwood 7 - full of energy, but distribution has to be better
McNeil 8 - Great goal, and games like this were he's got to work really hard to cover will do him the world of good
Barnes 6 - won fouls that weren't fouls, and didn't get blatant ones. But worked hard
Wood 7 - did his bit for the goal, and worked his socks off
Subs
JBG 6 - looked full of energy
Needed the three points. Got the three points and looked really solid at the back. But it was a tough watch, and we have to create more chances than this going forward and our ball retention was really, really bad. But still three points!

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
Heaton 7 (largely untroubled, but please, please kick the ball to WOOD and not Barnes. After all Wood is supposed to be our big target man!!!)
Bardsley 7
Tarks 7
Mee 8
Taylor 8* (Really has grown into the PL and is consistently strong, even when we're not at our best as a team)
Cork 7
Westwood 8
Hendrick 5
McNeil 7 (Actually not that effective today overall and looked tired AND unfortunately under instructions not to try to take players on down the wing. I would have taken him off after his soft yellow card tbh, BUT he then produced a moment of magic when we really, really needed it. Fair play to him and to SD)
Barnes 7 (More like his old self in patches)
Wooden 5 (+1 for scoring after 30 seconds, but after that largely useless)
JBG 7 (Provided a welcome steadying hand on that flank in the closing stages)
Such a typical Burnley/SD performance. Wolves looked slick and are definitely a very good side, but they had precious few clear cur openings tbf and although exactly the same could be said about us, we created two and took them both and danced off with the points. It was us all over and there haven't been enough of those games this season unfortunately. Our central midfield is very workmanlike, but lacks pace and creativity and if we get away with it and stay up this season we HAVE to address that or we're stuffed. Today Wolves had plenty of the ball, but we defended brilliantly, frustrated them and stole the points. It wasn't pretty and no way were we free flowing or fantastic on the eye, but balls to that. We won the match and if we go on and beat Cardiff it may well be enough! Today reminded me of Palace away a couple of seasons ago. A pivotal result, just when we needed it!

Re: Burnley v Wolves - Player Ratings
it's all about opinions, but quite baffling to me that anyone could rate Barnes 2 points higher than Wood.
Not one of Barnes better games and never looked like scoring, but he stuck at it.
