Casualties of playing to just survive ...
“It’s just boring how Burnley play - they used to try and attack teams a bit and pass it about ... now they just do the same thing over and over again and kick it upfront and then start defending, it gets boring to watch, so I’m going to meet my mates instead.”
Words from my nephew who has a season ticket and since before christmas hasn’t been a massive fan of going on the turf. He said he enjoys the day out with me and my mates and has a laugh but then once at the Turf he finds it a bit boring now and can have a laugh meeting his mates in town, going for a kick about or playing on his ps4 with mates instead.
It made me think of there are other young kids like this, who are just bored now on the football. As older fans we go out of habit and the results frustrate us and give us scope for discussion leading up to the next match but kids want more excitement - I can’t see a group of 13/14 year old a discussing how Nakhi Wells was a failed signing to keep their attaention on the football.
I’ve renewed his season ticket in hope he changes his mind but I’ve always argued the case of “it’s great to see all these big teams live at the Turf ...... but I guess for some kids nowadays they can do other stuff and watch football on tv.
From a football mad kid, to not wanting to go on the football has been a big swing with my nephew as he still loves playing and watching random matches/MOTD. Is this what we want for our next generation of fans?

Re: Casualties of playing to just survive ...
We got away with it last season because of the good start and chance of a high finish so he will have been caught up in the euphoria.
Now he is watching the same stuff with little chance of anything other than survival whilst his mates are talking about Liverpool and the Manchester clubs no doubt.
Sad to hear but understandable.

Since he got his ST he has seen us go up, get relegated ... go back up and then this season has bored him. After our last relegation he was still buzzing about the season starting, this time it’s different though.JohnMac wrote:We got away with it last season because of the good start and chance of a high finish so he will have been caught up in the euphoria.

10 months ago we just completed our most successful season in 40+ years. What has followed has been disappointing, without a doubt, but you’d have to be very fickle to stop attending based on such a short period of time.bfccrazy wrote:Is this what we want for our next generation of fans?
Obviously kids are fickle, but there’s not much we can do about that. This league is ridiculously tough. It’s a big ask to provide entertaining football whilst winning enough points to stay in the division.

Half Leicester City fan half West Brom.
Just seen a great high now reality bites plus moaning about pragmatic and survival based football.

Modern day thinking and attitude I'm afraid. Here today, gone tomoorow, hey ho.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Dont get me wrong. Its hardly barcelona. And we arent exactly doing well (relative to last season). But i dont understand fans who just give up cause it aint going their way.
Nowt's built to last, new models and inventions superceding almost everything at a frightening pace.
Must keep up with the Jones's, cant be seen to not have the latest cr@p. It's a largely superficial world
we live in today.
Attention to detail has all but gone out of the window, owt will do, hardly any pride anymore.Respect
is declining too.
Yours Faithfully,

Re: Casualties of playing to just survive ...
Totally understand it. Don’t like losing, but the style of play is absolutely pump at the moment.
Re: Casualties of playing to just survive ...
Boredom of the premier league for me not so much of watching Burnley. 99% of games the atmosphere is flat as a witches tit, players soft as s**t and some floppy haired German whinging whenever a tackle is made.... no ta!!
Re: Casualties of playing to just survive ...
It's part of the modern day world we live in, you can tune into streams and watch games so easily these days, everyones got used to good attacking football ala man city. Unfortunately, the football we have offered this season has been poor for the most part, A dyche team used to have real tenacity attacking when we used to mix it up, we have become more of a route one outfit and this style is likely to drive fans away when good football is at the end of a button.
Next season I want to see Dyche evolve the side, so it has the ability to mix it up and play again, unfortunately I think we will fail to do so. Whether thats through bad recruitment, poor investment or a manager who isn't changing with the modern game remains to be seen. I hope im wrong. But the summer needs a massive rebuilding job, of that there is no doubt!

Re: Casualties of playing to just survive ...
When was the last time we “ attacked teams and passed it about”? 1962?
Simply put if we’d have gone gung ho this season we’d have simply ended up like Hudds or Fulham in a Coylesque already relegated mess .
With the odd exception our hard working championship level team compete as well as we can in this league ,

If we get relegated, we'll be playing the likes of Luton and Barnsley. We might have a better chance of winning those games, but I'd rather stick with the PL for all its faults.

This is the PL, get used to it being a results business first and foremost.
Teams who've played prettier football than us have gone down and struggled.
It was pretty much always going to be like this, it has and is for numerous other teams, here to make up the numbers.

Re: Casualties of playing to just survive ...
Thought the atmosphere was good but the football poor until we went 2 up and we then regained composure, it's difficult to play nice football when under pressure against quality but those are the games we tend to win , we will never have the money to buy a full team of ball players to compete in this league so endeavour and effort will have to be enough , not a bad starting point though and something the young ones could take on board and use through out their lives, it's amazing what you can achieve if you put the effort in !cricketfieldclarets wrote:Well he missed out today!

TBH I wouldn't call it backs to the wall Heaton just did routine catches and a save or two nothing else.

He definitely missed out today - some very good passages of play we had even though we were under the kosh a lot.
Charlie Taylor and Mee did a number on Taore and for once (recently) our tactics seemed spot on to nullify their threats.

Fifa has grabbed these kids to the point they don't know what outside is or he's got to the age where he likes a girl or something can't blame kids for not going on turf as seeing the big teams has become the norm to the point it's nothing special anymore.

A teenager who doesn't show the same excitement and enthusiasm as he did when he was ten? I think you're overthinking this one.

We played some good stuff. I was impressed with our ball retention and defending. Wolves only had one shot on target. I thought we throughly deserved our win today, now lets hope we can crack on and finish the jobOoogeorgeorgeoghani wrote:Thought the atmosphere was good but the football poor until we went 2 up and we then regained composure, it's difficult to play nice football when under pressure against quality but those are the games we tend to win , we will never have the money to buy a full team of ball players to compete in this league so endeavour and effort will have to be enough , not a bad starting point though and something the young ones could take on board and use through out their lives, it's amazing what you can achieve if you put the effort in !

Wolves despite their speed and technical skills have played one game less than us and scored 38 in 31 as opposed to our 37 in 32 which surprised me

I used to go and watch 4th division dross in the rain as a tennager and enjoyed the match day experience. Today’s kids want to play on PS4 or whatever the latest games consoles are as in the OP post. Some would sadly prefer to stare at a screen. If a fan only started watching a few seasons ago then they’ve been spoilt but you should be hooked by now and not just give up.

Re: Casualties of playing to just survive ...
Yesterdays game was never going to be an open flowing game. Not against a team technically better than us, and the situation our league position puts us in.
That said the adrenaline flows just as much when you're nervous or when you're excited. It wasnt a great game, but how could you not enjoy it.
Youngsters growing up go through stages, they're always searching for something new that their age had always denied them till now. I'm sure he'll be back once hes found what hes looking for isn't as good as the Turf.
