Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
This is the title of a 142 page thread on the Brighton Board. It keeps being brought to the top of their board every time OUR Ash scores. Many of their fans see the error of , as they call it, witch hunt that led to Ash being sold. They keep bringing it back so as to try and point out what a ridiculous thing it was to ever let him go. One poster says. " Goals scored since 01/03/19... Brighton FC 3.... Ashley Barnes 3. What an absolute legend our Ash has become.

Quick browse of part of it and reminds me of some people on here who absolutely detest Barnes but have now mysteriously gone quiet, they haven't even held their hands up and admitted they were wrong.

Did we really only pay £250,000 for Barnes?

They really need to let it go. Bumping 8 year old topics just to try and prove some sort of point in the internet is ******* insane.

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
At the time £700k was the speculation, but Dyche said it was £450k and I seem to tremember the accounts that year backed that up.

I never thought he was premier league quality, but he's been absolutely superb now for the past two seasons and continues to improve.

Once again Brighton fans commenting on our club and players, what is wrong with the deluded w....rs, they are so jealous because we are better than them and cant stand for us to finish above them AGAIN. Barnsey has done fantastic since he joined us yet they still slate him. Bet they wouldn't say no to him going back there if the chance arose, it would make my season complete if they get relegated, its unlikely but it would be very nice .

Our Ash is far and away my favourite Burnley player, the man epitomizes what Dyche’s Burnley is all about. The more ‘seasoned’ posters may remember Andy Lochhead, Welsh great Mike England described Lochhead as the toughest CF he ever played against. I’d wager many of today CB’s feel the same way about Barnsey.

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
He was signed in the January window to bolster our first promotion push and I bet even Dyche thought at the time it was simply a very cheap short term measure to try to ensure promotion and then we'd fairly quickly move one. But he's been absolutely brilliant and utterly embodies what SD has created at Burnley and why we have been so successful. I was there at Yeovil when he made his first appearance (don't think any of us will EVER appear at Yeovil again!! ) and from that moment he has been an integral part of everything we've done! The day will come at some point when he becomes Scotty or Boyd or Marney or Barton or Vokes et al ....and we have to say ta da, but just like those mentioned his contribution to these golden years will never be forgotten.

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
He is just the perfect striker for this team. He has all the intangibles you would want: heart, passion, grit. I’ve never seen him give less than his absolute maximum. Talk about putting a shift in. But he doesn’t get enough credit for being a bloody good all round footballer too. Runs the channels well, can drop in and cover for the midfield, has a good touch and his finishing is first class.
A complete bargain and would definitely be in the top three best Dyche signings for me.

He plays for Burnley like a Burnley fan would play for Burnley. He leaves nothing in the dressing room on his way to the pitch, and has nothing left to take back to the dressing room at the final whistle.

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
Fantastic player and probably my fave player over the last couple of seasons. I read an awful lot of that BHA forum and in fairness the reason it is still going after 6 years is more BHA fans reminding the initial poster that he was wrong.
As for Chelsea fans, didnt they idolise Costa, the exact same kind of player. A menace that only your own fans love. Guarantee if Barnes signed for most other clubs he would be a cult hero almost immediately. With fans commenting how other clubs dont properly see his all round game and how much he impacts a game.

And when news emerged that they were considering Barnes as a replacement for Costa their whole fan base derided the notion - and the result since is that they have not had a striker who can score the big goals - Barnes would get 20+ in a team with that supply lineCleveleys_claret wrote:As for Chelsea fans, didnt they idolise Costa, the exact same kind of player. I seem to remember some of our fans lauding Brighton's transfer activity earlier in the season when we were losing and they were midtable. It seems all of a sudden it wasn't too clever afterall. If only they had Ashley Barnes.

I don't think so - he'd been trying very hard to get him in during the summer window but we couldn't raise the funds, even after Austin had been sold. I don't know for certain but I was led to believe he'd tried to sign him for Watford too.Dark Cloud wrote:He was signed in the January window to bolster our first promotion push and I bet even Dyche thought at the time it was simply a very cheap short term measure to try to ensure promotion and then we'd fairly quickly move one.

I also remember our fans lauding Derby's transfer activity in the summer of 2015 after we'd gone down. They signed Tom Ince, Darren Bent, Jacob Butterfield and Bradley Johnson.willsclarets wrote:I seem to remember some of our fans lauding Brighton's transfer activity earlier in the season when we were losing and they were midtable. I think we ended that season just a bit ahead of them.

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
I've visited that thread quite a few times over the last few years always good for a laugh. When he left it was 50/50 split, which changed to about 75/25 against after time. Now it's probably 25/75 for him. With those claiming they never wanted him to go lauding it.
I've always been a massive Ash fan. Even when he only had bit parts he always gave 110%, you can't help but love anyone who gives his all for the Clarets. I also thought he was a good footballer, his touch was always better than Sam's, and when played wide left could whip a ball in. Even I couldn't see what a great player he would become.
Every team, even the top 6 would love a player who could rough up the opposition centre halves the way Ash does. Hes suffered over his prem career from this persona that hes a thug, which refs have bought into, but his kiss on the nose, and his laughing at the Kovacic, imo, are all designed to try and show referees that he is hard but fair. I think in time it will work, so long as he keeps it up, and we could see a lot more free kicks coming our way.

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
Great post above saying he plays like a Burnley fan would. Genuinely astonishing improvement from Ashley over his time with us and is now without doubt a proven quality Premier League striker. Just a brilliant asset for BFC and generally makes me laugh, in a good way. every game through some facet of his sheer competitiveness. Love the man.
Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
All been said. I agree.
He improves his game, constantly. His touch is excellent. His finishing very good
He is Burnley.

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
Barnes missed nearly all of that season with his cruciate injury - was probably the following season when Gray & Vokes were the leading scorers. Think Barnes got six .Giftonsnoidea wrote:I can remember some on here clamouring for him to go a while back (was it the second championship season?) excellent player and a bargain too, definitely getting better with age !

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
Can anyone ever envision Barnes getting an England call up?
The only English players to have scored more this season are Kane, Sterling, Vardy and Callum Wilson.
With Kane potentially injured for the next set of internationals and Vardy retired would Southgate ever turn to Barnes?

Re: Ashley Barnes Is Not Good Enough For Us
Can’t for the life of me understand why he wasn’t involved as much st the beginning of the season. Opposition do not like playing against him and his sheer work rate, determination and let’s not forget ability to hold the ball, win the ball, and score vital goals is something we all know he’s contributed in abundance.
He might not be the prettiest on the eye to neutrals but ask our fans about him and the response will mainly be positive.
Aye aye
