We did better without him though....
When we played with him as a lone target man we weren't that prolific as a team were we?

He's actually no better than our current front two.

Probably on big dollar at Southampton, has a racing stable down there in the south, so cannot see him moving back up t'north.

More likely to move to Bournemouth or Brighton.

Also he is injury prone.

I feel a bit sorry for Charlie Austin. He's a decent striker but can never seem to find himself a settled home. Will probably be remembered as journeyman when he retires but he's better than that.

Personality might well be suspect off the pitch but a a very good player and finisher. Always looks committed too.

He's a more than decent PL striker when fit. But the "when fit" part is clearly the issue. If they were confident he'd get fit and stay fit, surely Southampton would no way be looking to let him go. And as said, he's not really an upgrade on the 2 we have starting. We need a really good back up guy to bring on and change games when things require it and although Vydra sits there week in week out thinking it could be him, SD really thinks it isn't! But it's not Charlie either.

Burnleys transfer policy is to sign players that haven't reached their peak. So I would be surprised if we signed him now.
Decent player though.

Charlie is still the best goal scorer I can remember, and I ain't young. But we did play better football without him, and we do have 3 very good strikers.
Time to move on.

He was quality when he played for us - natural goalscorer is an over used term but think Austin is (or was)
Liked him when he was here - but after he left he has not had a good word to say snitch his time here. He made a disgraceful challenge on Trippier in one game and for whatever reason showed a real contempt for us everytime he has played Burnley.
His off the field issues are well documented and his injury record is awful....he does not seem capable of getting fit again without picking up more injuries.
Someone will take a risk on him and give him a decent last payout which should mean he can afford his favourite hobby for a few more years...i’m just glad that it not likely to be us.

Sadly for Austin I think he's had his time in the PL, his next move will be back down to the championship.

He can score goals at any level, but his body just won't sustain the physicality of the premier league

Bench warmer at best, would be well down the pecking order here, he's Bournemouth bound without a doubt £50,000 a week he'll play about five time's for them and be on a three year contract..it will end in tears all round.

Not a chance Dyche would want him. I certainly don’t.
We have bigger plans.
Did well whilst he was here and saved us from administration. We’ve moved on now.
Why would Saints want him to go if he’s such a big draw? New Manager has seen enough and knows he needs to cash in now and save the wage.

It’s not a straight line Skipton. It’s a mixed bag.
4 of those players did well for us and 4 didn’t.
Of course we want young players with development potential and a good sell on value. Which club doesn’t?
However, you can’t have a team full of them.

I thought I read somewhere he didn't like it at Burnley ?

I have always been pleased that super Ash settled so well in the Burnley area - unlike Charlie and Eddie Howe.

I would be happy if Charlie came back

Charlie seemed to love it in Ramsbottom.

He probably prefers the weather down south mind.

Shame for him injuries have ruined a good career at the top level.

Have you not asked the question as to why he has been told he can leave Southampton? I always rated Charile as a top goalscorer but he's nothing like the player he was. We know about the shoulder and we know about the chronic knee problem because Steve Bruce told the world about it six years ago.

He's scored twice for Southampton this season in the Premier League - both coming in the last few minutes, albeit one was a winner against Arsenal. That's in 11 starts and 12 sub appearances.

I didn't know what we were going to get from him when he signed but he was an outstanding goalscorer for us, but I wouldn't touch him now.

One interesting aside, in his two years at Burnley, our results were significantly better when he didn't play than when he did but I think that was purely down to us tactically playing too much to him as anything else.

I'm not 100% sure on how Austin is playing at the moment but if I had to put money on one of them scoring a chance like Wood got against Chelsea, clean through with a bit of time to think. It would go on Charlie.
Wood seems to be an instinct type of player. Snapshot rather than slow it down and think about things.
Like against Brighton away, clean through and smashed it. Most strikers would of just slotted it either corner such was the big gaps.

Not to say Wood's scoring record with us isn't good enough. It clearly is.

Austin's a very good finisher and has a great goals:appearance ratio over his career (league games only: 48 from 42 at Poole, 31 from 54 at Swindon, 41 from 82 at Burnley, 45 from 82 at QPR) but 16 from 66 at Southampton.

He's great at banging them in but your body has to be up to working around and getting into the positions/getting through traffic etc- his cant do that as well as it used to do at the top level (as his decreased ratio with Saints indicates).

He probably needs to drop a division now, maybe QPR would have him back.

2017/18 Premier League
Wood 10 goals
Austin 7 goals

2018/19
Wood 10 goals
Austin 2 goals

You did say you didn't know how he is playing, I think you are relating back to when he was scoring goals for fun for us and QPR. Austin has scored twice since 8th April last year.

It sort of stands out when everyone else is nervously welcoming a new manager, wondering whether he's going to be a good, bad or indifferent appointment.
