I was asked a while ago to include the Derby v Burnley FA Cup report from John Sadler on the site and it's now done.

I was at both away games with my eldest son who is now 44.
To me, one of the greatest nights I've witnessed as a supporter of Burnley football club. Unless you had been there you just couldn't imagine what it was like.
Anyone remember the "Sensible Priced Van Hire" Transit which was on fire at the side of the road before the game?

That game always brings happy memories of being in the away end with my Grandfather, clapping along to the rythym.
He passed away 14 months later.

It's hard to put it into words. I've certainly witnessed nothing like it before or since and don't expect I ever will. So disappointing to lose the game but one of my lasting memories is Peter Shilton who was stood in front of us in the Derby goal all while it was going on and he just kept turning round in sheer amazement at what was going on and then stood and applauded us at the final whistle. I was in the stand and you could feel the whole structure moving as fans danced in the aisles, as the chanting went on and on to the beating of the advertising boards.bob-the-scutter wrote:Unless you had been there you just couldn't imagine what it was like.
I don't like losing but what an incredible day.

I was at the abandoned match and remember traveling in the fog. can't remember if I was at the rearranged game. Then again my mind plays tricks on me.

It would be great if we could make a lot of supportive noise on Sunday. I wasn't at the game at Derby unfortunately.

You can’t plan things like that. Hopefully there will be a good atmosphere but it’s not a big game for us in reality.
There was a smaller scale one at Anfield about 4 years later in a League Cup defeat.

I was at both away legs and still get goose bumps thinking about it. So many cherished memories over the years, possibly this was the best.

Another here who was at all three games as I foolishly attended the fogged off replay in between the two "proper" games, but tbh, it was a first and almost certainly a last and something not everyone can say they've experienced!!!
Re: ARTICLE: Derby County v Burnley, the day our fans were the talk of the cup
I too went to all 3 games and we sang "Want more Fog, we want more fog" at the 2nd game as the other goal slowly became invisible. The 3 games cost me a small fortune at the time but looking back now and honestly being able to say I was there is high up on the fantastic memories scale.

I was with several mates in with the Derby fans, on that terracing under the stand to the left of our fans.
Nearly all the Derby fans kept looking, saying nothing.
The longer it went on, the more they'd just stopped watching the game and were watching our fans.
As soon as the whistle went, I made all my mates (me the only Claret) follow me into our end. They even joined in!
It still gets mentioned now and again.
A genuinely phenomenal event.

Nearest its ever got to the night of that Derby game for me was in Athens this season. Due to being locked in, like Derby the singing went on and on well after the final whistle and it just felt like a special moment

I still wonder how we got home from the game abandoned because of a pea souper, our coach driver was foot to the metal and almost couldn't see six foot in front of him on the motorway,I was sat at the front and on the edge of my seat, funny how things look me that stick in your mind from watching the Clarets

Re: ARTICLE: Derby County v Burnley, the day our fans were the talk of the cup
If memory serves me correctly there were four or five games abandoned that night. They were all on the east side of the country and each one further south than the one before as the fog moved down from the north east.
We were losing 2-0 at the time and went on to lose 2-0 but thank goodness that fog came down and gave us that memory.

Went to both van full each time never have i witnessed anything like it and I never will again, the shear noise that day being generated from that stand for that length of time was unbelievable the energy the passion the velocity and the stance of defiance That stand was bouncing.
Four games away come to mine in my all time best theirs loads but top my list is
1 this one
2 Chelsea in the cup penalties
3 Sheffield United Cup Heath Goals
4 Olympiakos
Not in any particular order cos they all have there different reasons and very proud ones at that.
Thanks Tony nice one

That report is, to my mind, the best article ever written about what true support is.
Although it's over 25 years since it was published, I still have the page stuck on the back of a wall cupboard door and it still brings a tingle to my spine every time I read it.

One of my favourite ever memories of a Burnley away day. I was also 11 and went to both away games. Absolutely spine tingling stuff. And that article always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Also a very memorable chant during the fogged off game of 'We want more fog' to the tune of the Um ba ba chant seemed to go on a while. Can remember loads of fans singing it and jigging around to it, willing more thick fog to come down! Haha

I was at Uni with a Derby fan. Made it to the home gane, which was top class, but had to listen to the away games on the radio. I felt so proud of all those that represented us that night. I'm sure all clubs have reasons to feel special, well I hope most of them do, but that is certainly one of ours and sustained us through darker times. As Handbag Sammy would say it was "part of our heritage...aint it".

my cousin , who is a Dundee fan had spent the week in Burnley and drove us both down there, parked up and he had his arse bitten by a stray german shepherd on Dairy house road. the dog was clamped on tight and he was only set free from its clutches courtesy of a local resident who walloped it with a rolled up newspaper.Neither of us saw the game, spent several boring hours in A and E as he had his buttocks repaired, . Ah, the joys of football supporting.

Going back to the Foggy game I remember being lost and wandering around after looking for the car and kept bumping into someone else who was doing the same, rather amusing at the time.

Re: ARTICLE: Derby County v Burnley, the day our fans were the talk of the cup
I think the illusion of remembering it as being a night match would be cos it would have been dark by the end of the game and it being a replay.
As has been mentioned by others the first replay that was called off was a fantastic night in itself. If I remember rightly (which I may not) the away stand behind the nets had three tiers and for the first replay we only got two of them. Due to the first replay being such a great night and the rearranged match being on a Saturday I believe word spread and demand rocketed so they ended up giving us all 3 tiers for the final game
I was sat in the middle tier for both games and for the first replay I was sat very close to a certain Andrew Marriott who came to watch us and sit in with the fans even though I believe Forrest were playing that night. He got a few songs that night and signed my Burnley top although trying to make out his signature on that Championship winning top was not easy!
Edit: It might have been the final game Marriott was there but it is a long time ago

A mate of mine was the bloke who broke the minutes silence with "COME ON BURNLEY!" He thought he saw the ref put his whistle to his lips.
Re: ARTICLE: Derby County v Burnley, the day our fans were the talk of the cup
Thank you for posting the article and bringing back the memories.
I went to both matches. The fogged off match was all about the journey there, willing the fog to save us and the journey home to Salisbury. The motorway elements were ok. Foggy but reasonable, if you concentrated. The journey from the M1 to Derby was difficult. The side roads more so. Nonetheless, it was better inside, until it descended. Finding the car...yes! All looks different, when there are no landmarks to identify...in fact, nothing!
The entire journey back to the motorway, was just following others, hoping they were heading the right way. It was that bad. Better on the motorway and then horrendous near home, again. Was it worth it? No question. We had an evening match at Torquay, where I had to stop at a signpost, on the way home, get out of the car and stand by it, to read it! I was the only car on the road. At least I could follow lights, at Derby!
Then came the Saturday match. Ted McMinn was a pain!
...and then the chant. We always chanted well, so nothing new there. We sometimes continued for a good time. Nothing new there. This one continued. This one went on and on. It was an entity, in itself. We were essential servants of the chant.
The clapping was straightforward, for the first minutes, like every other match. Then we realised this chant wasn't stopping. Instead, the relentless rhythm changed. Who was responsible? We all were or none of us. It was a happening. As the minutes ate into the match, the rhythm changed regularly and perfectly, seamlessly easing into its new form, with everyone clapping and singing, as though we were chanting and clapping as we always did. Not so. Unique, but not enforced- natural. Watch an African or native American chant, when they 'lose themselves' to the intoxication of the beat and sound. This was our experience.
The match ended. The entity, aka the chant, continued. I don't recall clapping the team, at the whistle, or singing 'We love you Burnley, we do'. The rhythm and sound just morphed as we stood and roared our sound, to our team, our club, ourselves. We were one.
For emphasis, match over, we stood on our seats, perhaps to be nearer to our Burnley heaven
The Derby fans, to our left, tried to chant for Derby. We were oblivious. They stopped and just watched, in awe at this phenomenon- because that is what it was. Uncontrolled and yet perfectly resonated and continually changing its shape - just the words, 'Jimmy Mullen's Claret and Blue Army' remained constant.
Eventually, the Derby fans, their 'ultras' decided they had seen enough. Instead of just wandering off, they stood and applauded us, for some time, before leaving us. I suspect some of them still tell the tale, to their children and friends, over a beer.
We sang on and on and on. The team appear and applaud, as does a visibly moved, Jimmy Mullen. The holy chant is unabated, just the morphing rhythms distinguish changing events. The team disappear into the tunnel, once more and the chant follows them. We chant on, a little longer and then, suddenly, it was time. In a moment, it was done, gone. The spirit had been awakened and its purpose achieved.
We were as one. We filed out of the ground, silently. Knowing we had been the ingredients of something unique, inexplicable and important.
We were Burnley, we were representing every football fan, whose team had touched their soul. Above all, we were, for those many minutes, the soul of football.
Burnley fans visited Derby for a football match and the soul of football joined us.
Orient, from the Longside and Derby, are my two spiritual, inexplicable experiences.
Glad I was there.
Up the Clarets.
