What makes you happy?

Post by LoveCurryPies » Fri Apr 26, 2019 11:20 am

Having read the thread about depression, I started wondering what makes us happy. Not a superficial temporary happiness but something that brings you real happiness day after day.

I think my answer might be the pride I feel because my daughter is a nurse. She works on the Heart Unit in a major hospital and deals with life and sadly death everyday.

Yours?

You'reappyI'mappy...

I think it's the wrong word to use for adult human life on Earth.

Both having a sense of self in terms of fulfilling one's function as what one is, brings a sense of certainty and also losing oneself in something greater, like being a part of a crowd or swimming in the sea or walking on a mountain can bring absolution.

Both are forms of dynamic peace for giving a feeling of being an integral part of a holistic cosmology.

It's hard to quantify for me what makes me feel happy. There's nothing I could pinpoint right now and say if I had this I would be happy.

I take it on a daily basis and just take my emotions as they are. I do of course get pleasure out of things but those things don't always make me happy.

This is an age old philosopical question, debated since the time of the Greeks and beyond. It is more difficult to answer than would at first appear because happiness is difficult to define in itself. Is happiness a fleeting thing felt from the immediate sense of elation you may get from, say, Burnley scoring a goal? Is it more intermediate as in the sense of peace and tranquility you might get from maybe spending a few days in the mountains? Or is it that which seems to last (although few things ever do in an ever-changing life), such as a generally good life? Happiness (or the good as Plato would have had it) is the goal of life but, because all are doomed to die that goal will always be met with ultimate failure.

Happiness, however you define it, will never last because it is subject to change, as are all things, and as such will never and can never have permanence. All we can ever do is enjoy those moments or longer periods of time when we feel at our best, for whatever reason.

I find I'm at my happiest about 10 seconds after sex - for about another 10 seconds.

Bright blue skies with sunshine but not too hot, panoramic views with hills and mountains in the background, my wife and family to share these moments with good health all round - general peacefulness.

Today. Dropped about a few pubs. Met many friends. Been picked up by the other half and taken home. She lit the fire and started to cook. Very much aware that it not always like this for me and you though. Enjoy the moment...if you can.

Watching my boys playing sport. Spent many hours on the sidelines at training or games and I love it. Today is a huge day, and I'm not sure if I'm going to feel happy or terrified. My two boys play in the top hockey league in Western Australia. Youngest son made his debut last week, and today they play against each other for the first time, both of them in goal. I guess a 0-0 would make me happiest.

Following on from what I posted yesterday...…

Getting an email to confirm CovClaret junior has been selected into the Australia Under 21's. They are off to Spain in June to play against Spain, Holland, Germany, India, Belgium, Austria and England.

Does any one know if the light blue shorts we wore last week are available to buy anywhere? Jnr wears a pair of my old blue Burnley shorts over his pads but they are getting worn out and want to replace them. Last year he wore Burnley shorts instead of official Australia kit at the youth Olympics - he reckons they are lucky.
