Re: New Corner Stands
Funny when you think the grief Spurs got for building one of the world's biggest and best stadiums in about 18 months.

Same with the paint inside. White and grey just makes the stand stick out like a sore thumb when it's surrounded by claret and blue seats - surely this would've been a better idea?
(Excuse the dodgy paint job, but you get the idea!)

How do those corner stands work,do they just sit on the balcony bit at the front, what's going on inside ? Does it have a shop and a bar?

I applaud the club for their massive strides on and off the pitch in the last ten years, but these disabled facilities are a continuation of ill thought out, short term decision making when it comes to modernising the Turf.
Edit- when it comes to the Turf, it’s the one area we could and should be improving, but seem very reluctant to do so. We don’t need anything fancy. An extra tier on the Bob Lord, a modernised CFS and just better all round facilities for the regular fan.
It shouldn’t be hard or overly expensive, certainly with the money we have.

Yes I know Martin, I could have made my post clearer by adding it should have been located within the stand currently being built between the BL stand and the JM stand.martin_p wrote:But there’s another stand going up in that very corner.

The cost of knocking down a stand to incorporate a disabled section would have taken far longer, cost far more and would probably be too early to justify in terms of how long we remain a top flight club.
I think the look poor from outside, but from inside the ground they look fine, and will look even better when in use. The only gripe is the screen, but that's supposed to be getting reviewed.

Re: New Corner Stands
I agree with some of the above. Everything we do to the Turf appears to have a stamp of the here and now, and as cheaply as possible on it.
From the pillars at the main entrance not even hiding the fact they’re hollow, the shoddy rendering job on them and cheap caps on top, to the cheap cladding, which has been dented by workers that won’t be asked to make it right, to the corner stands. They should both be the same height regardless of the height of the Bob Lord, but that would have meant an angled roof for a small section of the Bob Lord, so slightly more expense.
In fact, if we’d have spent an extra £50K in 1995 to re-house the police box we may even have a stand where the goals sit in the middle of it.
Cheap. That’s all we ever do.
I wish our board had a vision. A serious 5-10 year plan with the ground. When we update one but it should be in preparation for the next stage, not building around a floodlight pylon with no idea what we’re going to do if we need access to maintain it.

We still don’t fully comply with the Premier League standards, despite the time, effort and cost. I’m convinced that either we’ve been totally ripped off for those corner stands or the £5m mentioned involved other work elsewhere.Colburn_Claret wrote:Improving disabled facilities wasnt an option, it had to be done to meet new Premier League rules.

Re: New Corner Stands
Totally agree. We're little Burnley in pretty much every aspect. As for the corners in particular, it's brilliant we're going to have better facilities for supporters (about time) but why don't the new bits join the other stands? Why aren't they flush? They look rank. They shouldn't be corners at all but rather extensions to connect the stands on either side. As it is, they're just separate chunks. Might as well have wheeled in the kind of temporary raked seating you see at country fairs for dog shows. But hey, is there contactless payment at the Turf yet? Baby steps.Claretforever wrote:I agree with some of the above. Everything we do to the Turf appears to have a stamp of the here and now, and as cheaply as possible on it.

My biggest gripe is not starting to plan for something that will need doing eventually (BLS & CFS), if we have a long term vision of what we want Turf Moor to look like in the future then you can plan it in as many phases as are necessary (that doesn't mean the club have to commit to some or all of the project)
The subject matter is 'Ground Redevelopment/Improvement', the board's response (and many on here) is we don't need a bigger ground/capacity, end of chat. IMO the capacity is a fair way down the list of outcomes from any possible building work, a small increase would be the benefit of the improvement to Turf Moor, especially the sight lines for many of our fans which is substandard and the cramped concourses which affect the majority.
Turf Moor has it's own unique character which makes it stand out from the soulless bowls but that does not prevent the club moving into the 21st century while it has the funds to make a positive difference, for now and the future of the club and it's supporters.
Re: New Corner Stands
I was told by someone who is involved in the club that the costs had risen to £12m. No reason to doubt what he said though it’s hard to see where the money has gone.Claretforever wrote:We still don’t fully comply with the Premier League standards, despite the time, effort and cost. Re: New Corner Stands
I like the idea that one corner stand is renamed on a rotating basis, maybe every season.
Bit like the 4th plinth
We could somehow organise a poll for the annual naming, as long as we can make it 'bast@rd proof' so they don't hijack it!

Re: New Corner Stands
£12 million for a bit of a framework and cladding, ridiculous. We should be claiming it all back from the builders in penalty fees, it's taken far too long to build, even if they uncovered problems when drilling the foundations that's down to bad planning and poor survey work they (builders) carried out. I hope the club disputes the final bill.

I think they look ok at best but we need to do something with the Perspex at the end of each stand, seeing the new stand through each end looks ridiculous. They also need some colour in there, grey and white is very odd.

Grey and White paint tend to be used as base coats and cheaper to buy than Claret and Blue.

We have a Board member that has been on the Board for almost 33 years and been at the club for many years prior to that. I recall the same director telling us the story of his first Board meeting back in July 1986, when a fellow director at the time Basil Dearing stunned the others with the news that the club was insolvent and operating illegally.Herts Clarets wrote:From the description it sounds as though it may be Jim Thompson. So, although we understandably criticise Bolton presently, it really is a case of "there but for the grace of God".

To be fair it was Basil that recommended we re-valued the ground, which was subsequently valued much higher and at a stroke we were no longer insolvent.Lord Beamish wrote:Basil Dearing. Employing him as your Legal Representative was essentially a Guilty Plea.
