Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
Since the start of the year we are fifth in the form table and the third highest scorers, if we can carry this form into next season without the distraction of Europe , surely we must have a chance of finishing in the top six?

Question is would Sean really want to finish 7th again and all that it entails?

Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
I see the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place teams as needing to transition their squads if they are to contemplate being realistic contenders to Liverpool and City next season. All 4 have reached the maximum potential of the players, and staff, they have in their 1st team 25s. I expect to see players like Hazard, De Gea, Son (I think Spurs will see him as being at his top sales value) and any of Arsenal's over-rated squad moving on over the summer. How they are replaced is what will determine how easily it would be to knock them off their secure perches. I see Wolves and West Ham as the most likely challengers - however, as a pundit, I am the crappiest pundit in crappiestville

Think if we finish mid table that would again have been an incredible season. Lets not carried away with results since early January-and lets hope that applies to the Board too. Several new signings, retaining key members of the team, retaining our manager and coaches and offloading some of the fringe players will be an excellent foundation-plus of course our "never say die spirit" will be a big factior

Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
Just being realistic and if we come 14th next season Im sure pretty much everyone will consider we have had a good season and done well.
Was the same last year when this seasons fixtures come out and a lot of people were saying how easy the start was and how we'll be straight back in the top 8. On the other hand I was a bit more realistic about things and got slated for the below opinion that proved to be pretty accurate

Its almost the reverse of last year where we had nothing to lose at the start got some great results and never looked back

Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
Whilst the ultimate aim is to stay up, I think aiming for a top half finish or at least 12th is where we should be heading so we continue to progress. I also think its realistic and achievable based on our performances in 2019.

If our sole aim is to survive each season, you can be sure that very soon we won't.
We need to build slowly and progress year after year. As a minimum we should be targeting the top ten.

I would like to be comfortably away from the bottom and have a decent cup run for a change.

Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
If you aim low you probably won’t do much better. On the other hand if you think we have the quality, squad depth and budget to finish in the top 6 you need to give your head a wobble. Mid table would be a good season and avoiding relegation again is still some achievement. It would be nice to have a cup run but with Dyches approach to these and past record along with the board’s prioritisation of the PL it is unlikely.

My “realistic” aim for next season would be to have a decent cup run, but probably won’t happen.

Points were more evenly spread and there weren't the so-called 'big six' teams.box_of_frogs wrote:Probably what West Ham said when they went down with 42.
Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
As Wirvine above has just intimated; any business that rests on its laurels soon finds itself overtaken by the competition.
Clearly this season the Manager and squad could not cope with the Europa League. This became apparent to me when the manager was asked in an interview about the next european game which was to be followed by playing Man Utd. He actually said that he/we had obviously got an eye on the Utd match. Something that he had hitherto never said. Always a match at a time.
So the big challenge is to regularly get mid table or above and start challenging for Europe. And it is a big ask on our budget. But, we have done it once so no reason to assume we cannot do it again. Mind you as Fulham found out to their cost, spending £100 on transfers is no guarantee of success.

Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
If you simply aim to finish 17th every year then it won't be long till you slip up and drop through the trapdoor. I'd say top half and have a go in the Cups is a realistic aim for us.

Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
As said, we should simply aim to win as many points and finish as high up the league as we can. We want to be comfortable and "safe" as early as possible during the season and I think this season has shown us that in order to do that we need to make some more serious investments in the summer. No way would I ever advocate spending zillions and zillions and betting the famous Kilby/Garlic ranch al la Bolton et al, but we need to be making some tough ish decisions about certain players and making some serious bids on udgrades and replacements. To me we've got away with it a bit this year as our form since Boxing Day has been nothing short of remarkable, but you can't get away with being in the bottom three at Christmas season after season.

Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
Unfortunately we'll be in a relegation scrap from the 1st game. It's a tough league, make no mistake.
Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
I would say midtable is where we should realistically be aiming for. If you look at our performances over the second half of this season, I think we have shown that we are worthy of holding our own in the Premier League. A 4th consecutive season in the Premier League is a massive achievement for a club like Burnley, the board now need to think about the plan for the club in the coming years and if their approach is hanging on each season for survival or aiming high. Hopefully it is the latter.
Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
If you take the first half season from last season and the second half of the season this year and combined them, would we be on around 65 points?
In the last two seasons in this division we have probably been a top 6 side 50percent of the time with the other 50percent probably seeing us as a bottom 5 side.
That probably means we are a mid table side right now.

Re: Should we be aiming for the top six next season?
Unlike this season we need to hit the ground running or we will be in a relegation scrap, like this.
We need to freshen the squad up and bring in a 3 or 4 new faces. I wouldn't get shut of many in the Summer unless they have run down their contracts. We definitely need to retain Bardsley though, and if Ward is off we will need a Lfb for cover.
Midfield is the key and a 4th striker to challenge Wood
