Tourists at the Turf

Post by scouseclaret » Mon Apr 29, 2019 12:49 pm

Not sure if it’s a good thing or not, but I spotted a couple of Japanese tourists at the match yesterday, fully bedecked in Clarets regalia.

Is this confirmation that we are now an “established”Premier League club??!!

Start worrying when you see a Burnley shirt in a Syrian refugee camp!

In the CFS yesterday there were a couple of American (I think!) gents who had bags full of merchandise. They were just soaking up the atmosphere and videoing everything that went on.

We once went to see a baseball match in Japan and they couldn't have been more pleased to see us so I'll ensure me and my lad always make visitors to the Turf feel welcome where the situation arises.

I've seen a few over the last couple of years, from various places around the world.
I like it, seeing tourists and hearing foreign languages around the club shop is a good thing. My club is the place people from around the world want to come and see (and not just against the likes of City... seen some during the 'lower-profile' games).

Keep your 'plastic' tags, if someone wants to support Burnley who didn't used to, it's good... it's because we're big league

Was it a young couple? We saw them walking up the flyover and gave them a friendly hello. We also had a family next to us, maybe Icelandic? The young lads all had Burnley gear on and they were all really into the game.

I agree it's great we are getting our name out there, as a club and I hope we see many more in the future, it can only be good for everyone and the town.

It's virtually every game now that there are some tourists there. Last season I even saw some ground tickers from Germany, they'd come over to do three games in a weekend and were at the Burnley v Newcastle game. They were in the club shop trying to speak in German to some bloke in a Dortmund coat.

I think we have to say that we are (kind of) an established PL club now, at least for the forseeable. That brings with it a global profile whether we like it or not and, at least from my view, why wouldn't we like it? For a hundred years or more the only reason people in this country had heard of Burnley was because we had a football club, I'm not sure the town is famous for much else positive. If it gives Burnley the town a wider profile why not. I've never been too keen on the 'little old Burnley' tag anyway and it wouldn't bother me in the least if, given the ground capacity, we had 30k out of towners attending games every time. I sometimes think some Clarets are proud of our 'smallness' and fear growth in the same way that people who have been a fan of some band that have only had cult status then suddnely find massive fame get all upset that they have. If we had the ground I'd love to see 70k people at games like United but it ain't gonna happen, but if it did I'd be even more proud of my club, not sad.

Either way let's embrace the Japanese/Americans/Latvians/Serbo Croats etc., the club deserve all the recognition they get, whatever quarter it comes from.

I love to see people from all over the world at the Turf.

Would much rather have a couple of Japanese folk with bags of merch than the City fans I had yesterday!

Not sure how it could ever be a bad thing.

Saw a young asian couple walking under the subway from the bus station at around 10am Sunday. They stopped me and asked where Turf Moor was. I pointed away but unfortunately did’t have time for a chat.

I think it’s fantastic.

Twice I’ve had a chat whilst getting my passport stamped going into the States. Both times they’ve mentioned they watch the Premier League and Burnley.

The tourists are far more valuable than the average fan, spending 100s in the club shop.
This is why Old Trafford and Anfield are full of them.

That entry in the accounts that always looks shite compared to other clubs, ‘other’, ‘match day revenue’ or ‘merchandise’, this is how other clubs get that number up.

Great to see.

Indeed there were. But I thought they were Chinese. Half a dozen of them. Massive in China are the Clarets. Now that May has given Hiswei the nod for 5G we should get Huseei on board.

Great for the club shop, they must spend a fortune. Met up with my great nephew from the USA last week in Barcelona, he is 14 and was playing in the Barca under 14 tournament next to the Nou Camp. He told me his mate spent €500 in the club shop, ridiculous

Talk about a d1ck swinging contest to see who chatted to the most tourists.. they’ve been around for the big games since the first Dyche promotion and most games the odd Chinese and few bits from Europe are around . Doesn’t do us any harm as a club

I saw a couple of Japanese fellows outside the club shop taking photos of each other. Bags of BFC goodies in their possession. One middle aged chap and a younger version of himself. Dad and Lad?

Thought to myself.....this is bloody brilliant

I often take a Lithuanian work colleague on the Turf and he loves the whole day with beers before the game, a bite to eat, Premier league football and a good bit of banter. He loves Burnley now. :)

Great to see. We have come a long way since the first promotion. Asians used to not feel welcome on the Turf. Was only under Coyle when i saw a young asian lad and his dad abused on the JHL to the point the kid was in tears and they left.

When we first played Rovers on the turf again in 2000 there was a big group of Norwegian lads who came over for the game they were all out in town the night before the game!

Daughter was at Lancaster University for four years until 2017. They were running a coach to every home game for the chinese students while she was there.

I remember a time during the 80s when people wouldn’t travel from Accy to watch us play, so all the foreign languages I hear in the club shop these days is s bit surreal!
