Also, club, stadium and general admin staff were due to be paid today. Unsurprisingly, they haven't been.

Handing in your notice (as I understand Olkowski has done - whatever that means here; footballers aren't usually in contracts which they can terminate at their convenience) and "wanting to leave" (reported by The Bolton News) are different from withdrawing your labour. I'm not an expert in football contract law so I don't know the nuances.ClaretTony wrote:Already been reported by the Bolton News that Pawel Olkoswki has handed in his notice. That's exactly what Olkowski has done. Make your mind up; handed in notice or withdrawal of labour (= going on strike) ? They are not the same thing
Anyway I'm glad the PFA have got involved

After a certain time, the contracts are deemed to be terminated, if not paid.

I'm sure non payment of wages would support the strike action while they individually also (apparently) hold the ability to terminate the contract. Again, I've no idea what the consequences of termination for breach are. Do all the payments to the end of the contract become due or not? It would be a very expensive point of principle to walk away from a long-term contract if wages are simply delayed.ceborame wrote:If that's the case, what the hell have the PFA been advising them ?

If they can walk away and seek a club that can/will pay them on time then I'm sure they'll forgo any future owed wages from Bolton.
Although I vaguely recall David James and possibly Sol Campbell chasing Portsmouth for years over owed money when it was all going down the drain there.

Re: Bolton
I'm not getting Bolton sentiment stuff either. There might be a few decent Bolton fans who would have mourned the Clarets in '87, but not many. My experiences of every trip to either Burnden or Horwich (not Bolton) have invariably involved Bolton idiots fighting or threatening to. What they did under Davies would be classed as cheating now, ok, not then, but there is still a reckoning to be paid. That reckoning is now. They shouldn't be able to slime out of it with an admin period and pop back up in League One on minus whatever points. Let the club die.

The point I was making was that if they can walk away from their contract after 14 days of non payment, why didn't the PFA advise them to do this rather than take the (potentially) unlawful strike action that they did.thatdberight wrote:I'm sure non payment of wages would support the strike action while they individually also (apparently) hold the ability to terminate the contract. Isn't Gordon Taylor the highest paid trade union leader in the UK (edit - highest paid in the world)? And this has happened at Bolton on his watch

Why would a player with 2/3 years at 10/15k a week walk away from a contract knowing that they will probably not get even half of that at another club?ceborame wrote:The point I was making was that if they can walk away from their contract after 14 days of non payment, why didn't the PFA advise them to do this rather than take the (potentially) unlawful strike action that they did.

In the last few years whenever this happened the players always ended up getting paid so the players probably thought after the 1st month that they would get it the following month once the PFA got involved. After 2 they have probably realised that their is a strong possibility that the club could become extinct. This has probably forced their hand regards the strike action as it is so close to the end of the season. If they hadnt done anything and the season ended they know there would be no rush from a buyer to buy the club in preseason when their is no income and just large outgoings.

Everything surrounding Bolton stinks, including the courts who should have compiled with the Inland Revenue months and months ago.

EFL quite happy just to kick this down the road by giving Bassani the green light.
With the debts they have, its just a matter of time before Bolton go bust, and the EFL want to put that off as long as possible.

I think Lancaster has this spot on. A club the size of Bolton going bust would be a huge embarrassment for the EFL. Seems they can’t prevent it from happening themselves so can only do what they can to delay it and pray for a miracle.Lancasterclaret wrote:EFL quite happy just to kick this down the road by giving Bassani the green light.

The number of clubs in this mess is so high that the PL/EFL/FA have effectively put themselves in a position where it is impossible to turn anyone down who is crazy enough to bail a club out for a season or more.

Re: Bolton
I seem to remember Bolton getting relegated some time in the early 1960s when I was a small boy. I remember gloating about it, mainly because of their beating Manchester United in the 1958 Cup Final, just after the Munich disaster. I was shocked when my grandfather gave me a good telling off, saying what a great old club Bolton Wanderers were with fine traditions. I still keep his words in mind so I have to admit that I am sorry to see Bolton in such a parlous state. Their supporters are no different to ours, they just wear a different badge, so I have sympathy for them as well. It's a terrible thing to see old established clubs driven into the ground like this by the modern, money-based systems in football

Bassini has absolutely no money and is a fantasist who is taking the P. How come it's obvious to everyone, but not to Anderson and the EFL? Crumbs, the EFL (along with the PL) have seen this guy "in action" before and it wasn't pretty. Anderson should actively be looking for and talking to others (if there are any)

(TBH, and it's been discussed on here before, I do wonder if Shackleton really did have someone in the background who suggested they'd back him with a shed load of cash, but ultimately they left him high and dry and let him down. Maybe?)

We were getting hammered by Wigan at Springfield Park on Easter Monday, we were in the stand and decided to leave early. Walking past the directors box mine and Peter's eyes met, with the rage of a shocking performance I shouted "you can fcuk off!" at him. Bad times those were.
Back to Bolton, has Bassini actually found out the real amount of debt and realised there is a good chance of starting next season on -12 points and he would be paying the Davies family for years?

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.
As already been stated, Boltons debt too big to successfully service, only a complete collapse and starting again is probably the only solution.

Frightening. You're (for some insane reason) thinking of buying a debt-ridden club and you don't conduct thorough due diligence. Is he playing with a full deck?
