I notice we've had a few FA Cup ties with Liverpool down the years, but always seem to lose replays at their place.

Add the 1914 FA Cup Final to the list, according to this superbly detailed article we took more than 15,000 to the Crystal Palace:

Preston 2011. Add 6 more Whalley Clarets ( if that was the jack cork last minuter) . We got a tad over exuberant in that nob end stand with the old fellas face on it. Turned out a bit like the old days.Claretforever wrote:As we're on a new page....

Re: Largest ever Burnley away followings...??
Went a fair few times to Gay Meadow, in the league and Cup as you say always took a big following in the Cup matches. And the Bond thing made it spicier their, the home game where the banner was the width of the Long Side making our point in big letters.Holtyclaret wrote:Was that the Shrewsbury game where bond hid in the stand? Absolutely mental scenes when Deary scored the late winner in front of us! Up there with York and Carlisle .
Think we drew them at there place around 81-82 season got beat 1-0 it was mayhem and one young copper came into the crowed trying to bring order back after his helmet was getting chucked about he went out on a stretcher in a critical condition it was very inhuman to say the least.
The trouble was they used to underestimate our followings when you could just turn up and never expected the velocity that we could accumulate with us being in the small leagues

The greatest day ever watching Burnley and that`s saying something as it was the Fourth Division. It was just a magical mix of so many things. Doing the conga over Blubberhouses something that will never be forgotten!ElectroClaret wrote:York was mad.

bit taken from the FA Cup final story v Liverpool
As huge crowds wended their way to the three principal railway termini, there was unmistakable evidence of Burnley's followers, who were a sober, orderly yet joyous lot.

Was there. Is that when Robinson `missed` the penalty?Quickenthetempo wrote:Liverpool away in the Fa cup when Heath was manager. We had the Anfield Road stand and maybe half of the side stand as I was in there near to the halfway line.
Maybe 8/9k there. A scouser walked past before the game and said 'bloody hell Burnley must be shut today'.

Re: Largest ever Burnley away followings...??
Could someone please help to refresh my memory (it`s driving me crazy now). After leaving York, the royal `we` had to make a pitstop to buy final supplies of beers for the celebratory drive home. Wherever it was, there were a good 100 people massed in celebratory mood BUT one car full of absolute morons had moved on from beer, fancied a No.124 from a Chinese restaurant take away are were threatening to RAM RAID the establishment if the poor owners wouldn`t open shop. WHERE WAS THIS??????Longside4evr wrote:Doing the conga over Blubberhouses something that will never be forgotten! haha

The occurrence is burned into my memory, alas the location is not.

I thought you lot were experts with statistics !!
what about the 17 million we took to Cowdenbeath for a pre season friendly in 1968.
They had to close the borders such was the fanatical travelling support. and we won 8-1.

It's a tad difficult when no statistics exist, other than people's memories. There'll be a bit of exaggeration goes on as that's how people's minds work, but they won't be a million miles out.Wile E Coyote wrote:I thought you lot were experts with statistics !!
Mind you, I remember a post, possibly on Rovers' forum(?), a couple of years ago which asked something similar. One bloke was adamant they'd taken 10,000 to Bristol Rovers in the 70's or 80's, until it was pointed out that the attendance that day was 9,000, and they averaged about 8,000 normally. It was then downgraded by others to nearer 4,000.
Where someone can remember our allocation, such as the 1965 cup tie at Man United, that's a good indicator. Great hearing the stories as well.

My dad told me before the Fa cup game at the Turf (early 90s) that it would be a draw and they will beat us at Anfield as that was what Liverpool always did. Their tactics were always to get teams back to Anfield were they had a massive advantage.Claretforever wrote:I notice we've had a few FA Cup ties with Liverpool down the years, but always seem to lose replays at their place.

Cup with Liverpool going back to WW2, not at neutral venues:

1995: home 0-0, replay 0-1

Re: Largest ever Burnley away followings...??
That game summed up for me what it was like supporting Burnley at that time. Massive expectation from an amazing support followed by an abject performance on the field and being made to look stupid by a clearly inferior small-time club, whose supporters took great delight in laughing at our ineptitude and failure to perform. Thank the Lord those days have gone (last week excepted!).Longside4evr wrote:Port vale away FA Cup in the 77 season was massive following as well and another defeat over 18,000 on

Re: Largest ever Burnley away followings...??
Our support at the 1988 Sherpa Van Final v Wolves didn't break the 30,000 barrier.
Wolves sold their full allocation and had a another section in the upper tier at the Burnley end (next to where we were stood). There was still room on the lower tier. 28,000 was the reported Burnley following.
Over 80,000 for two 4th Division sides who were both were playing 'away'. Incredible.

Re: Largest ever Burnley away followings...??
Some great followings:
The 37,000 who pitched up at Wembley in the Sheffield United play off final saw us reap the greatest prize in the football world.
I travelled with the Accrington Clarets that day and we were the last coach to get out of the car parks (except for a broken down bus full of Sheffield United fans). Emotionally spent, I drifted off to sleep with my head against the seat in front. Many hours later I made it home with friction burns on my forehead which remained festering for weeks afterwards.
The 6,000 Clarets that drowned out the Chelsea support in the cup win at Stamford Bridge in the Carling Cup fourth round in 2008.
The 6,500 that occupied the Town End at Preston in the Sherpa Van Northern Final in 1988.
The 6,000 - 7,500 + at York & Carlisle in 1991: This was in addition to the huge away followings that season. 2,000 turned up at places like Barnet, Northampton and Maidstone United who played nowhere near Maidstone (Dartford ?). 4,000 went to Mansfield. 3.500 to Chesterfield and 1,500 brave souls experienced Cardiff City.

I always remember 1,500 as the figure at Cardiff, and the fact 16,000 attended that day, because of the reports afterwards of their fans throwing bricks over the away end and our fans having to take refuge on the pitch.

Surprised at that considering their media report 45-47.0000, which leaves 7-8,000 of freebies and sponsor tickets. Seems a lot for such a game? Yeah, didn't they have 6,000 in the Burnley end?Dressinggown wrote:Our support at the 1988 Sherpa Van Final v Wolves didn't break the 30,000 barrier.

Wolves is such a big place cmpared with Burnley though, and their fall and rise happened within a much shorter period, whereas ours was prolonged.
