50's, 60's science fiction movies
50's, 60's science fiction movies
Inspired by Futurama's nostalgia for old sci-fi I've been binge-watching old sci-fi films from the 50's and 60's. Mainly the better known ones such as Destination Moon, The Time Machine, the marvellous The Day The Earth caught Fire, The Incredible Shrinking Man and Attack Of The 50ft Woman (I know!).
But now I'm running out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions of maybe lesser-known films from the time - maybe British films? I'm going to check out some Quatermass soon.
Recommendations welcomed....

Forbidden planet with Leslie Nielsen is excellent
Re: 50's, 60's science fiction movies
LC I've watched Forbidden Planet lots of times over the years - always entertaining. Others I recently watched are Fiend Without a Face, Things To Come, War of the Worlds etc. I'm looking for films released before 2001 A Space Odyssey which changed the game.

Re: 50's, 60's science fiction movies
The Day the Earth Stood Still from 1951 is the first 50's film that springs to mind.
The Incredible Shrinking Man is a great film, as is another of Jack Arnolds, Tarantula (1955).

THEM! Yes, that's a good call.
Re: 50's, 60's science fiction movies
Them! is a favourite of mine from childhood. I could only find it on itunes though.
The 1958 tv production of Quatermass And The Pit is excellent

My personal favourite is This Island Earth starring Faith Domergue. Most entertaining. Great colour and featuring a marvelous invention called an 'interocitor'.

Planet of the apes. There were a few sequels in the 70's too although the first from 1968 was the best received.
Re: 50's, 60's science fiction movies
Haha Dazzler. I thought Flesh Gordon was ace when I first saw it. Tried again recently and realised that it's really a terrible film!
Sleeper, Planet of the Apes are going on the list.

The Dammed:

Not conventional Sci-Fi.

Not sure that I have the title exactly right but I remember as a young teenager slipping in to watch 'The Brain from Planet Uries.'

Re: 50's, 60's science fiction movies
This is starting to lose the plot. As I’ve said before the the best film in this genre is This Island Earth. Check it out Svenster.

Dermot. This Island.... is one I've watched recently. I agree it is a cracker. When Worlds Collide is another.
FMITM - Great suggestion. Lionel Jeffries is always great, and he's wonderful in this.
Don't think I've watched the original Body Snatchers, only the remake with Donald Sutherland. It's definitely going on the list.

20,000 leagues under the sea.
Good film and the title reminds us of our near neighbours too.

Plan 9 From Outer Space is quite a giggle. Or you could just watch Ed Wood to catch the story of the film.Guitargeorge wrote:Check out Wild Women of Wonga. Rates as worst film ever.
