All these albums like ten years after, led zep etc, was the stuff all the dull crowd listened to at school, whereas the cool kids were into soul and going to the wheel and the birdcage in Ashton under lyne.
"cool kids" hahahahaha.

a tin pot army in replica togs, with their overnight holdalls neatly stacked at the doorways of the local pubs.
About as unoriginal and tedious as it got...and that dirge they pretended to like, I repeat..hahahahaha.

We met through a mutual friend, and I used to meet up with Francis and busk in Keswick. Then one week he says' I cant come next week mate, I'm off on a European tour'. They were on TOTP that week.
Ha ha. Brilliant. Frank wound up on a Yes album doing some backing vocals. He was a damn good guitarist though. I think I read that he lives in America now but not sure. They made good singles but on their albums there was a definite Yes feel.

And when did he start calling himself Frank? 😁

To be fair I would include every Kate Bush album to this list, one of the greatest female artists ever.
Totally agree with this Steve. Amazing songwriter and singer. Dave Gilmour saw the potential when she was about 15 or so I think. Helped produce her first album. The rest is history.

We've talked of the band Home.

I've just listened to their first album, Pause for Hoarse Horse, and there's this song on there that may interest some:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pJYEVn ... wW&index=4

It seems Mike Stubbs, lead guitarist of Home and lyricist of this song, had a brother called Willie who played in a band with Jimmy Page (Led Zep). Jerry Donahue, who played with Fotheringay and Fairport, is also mentioned in the lyrics. An explanation is given in the YouTube comments by Alistair Saldanha, about half way down. Interesting!
Stubbs was a talented guy. Played piano mainly live but he and Wisefield kicked up a storm when they both played guitar (Dreamer?). He disappeared from the scene and died pretty much in obscurity. ‘Pause’ is a great ‘lost’ album although not in the same league as ‘Home’.

I saw him do an hour folk singing when I was at uni and then saw him do two hours plus at Blackpool Winter Gardens a lot of years ago. As you say, achingly funny.

'During my student days, 1970-73, I acquired a low budget album called 'Nice Enough To Eat'. It was a compilation of various bands but I absolutely played it to death. King Crimson, Spooky Tooth, Quintessence and Blodwyn Pig were some of the bands on it, with Spooky Tooth's 'Better by You, Better Than Me being an absolute Better. Do compilations count?'

I have that album and the low budget one before that from Island Records called 'You Can All Join In'. It came out early 1970s showcasing some known and some up and coming bands as Free, Jethro Tull, Traffic, Fairport Convention, Spooky Tooth, who were with the Island label. The playlist of the album:

1. A Song For Jeffrey - Jethro Tull 2. Sunshine Help Me - Spooky Tooth 3. I'm A Mover - Free 4. What's That Sound - Art 5. Pearly Queen - Tramline 6. You Can All Join In - Traffic 7. Meet On The Ledge - Fairport Convention 8. Rainbow Chaser - Nirvana 9. Dusty - John Martyn 10. I'll Go Girl - Clouds 11. Somebody Help Me - Spencer Davis Group 12. Gasoline Alley - Wynder K Frog.

The album cost14/6 (fourteen shillings and sixpence) at the time, around 70p in today's money. Same album on vinyl is now going for £18 on Amazon. I was a big Free fan at the time of the album and their track on the album, 'I'm A Mover' is the standout track for me with Paul Rodgers in great voice and Paul Kossoff's guitar work.

I think, I could be wrong, that Harris had something to do with production on their first album (Wally)I keep thinking about a track on there that had the lyrics:
Horses for courses
Men and companion side by side
But can’t recall the title. I think it had something to do with the charge of the light brigade.
This song is on their second album, Valley Gardens. Here it is!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1C8R2hJvEc

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=17970

The third review explains a bit of the background.

Listening to this it reminds why I didn't like Valley Gardens. The song starts off well enough but then gets into a bit of a mess for my tastes. Compare to this from the first:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqeOtGLCZc8

Anyway, that's my tastes!

I love Kate Bush's first album. All the tracks are excellent except James and the Cold Gun which sounds ordinary in comparison. After that album there are only two or three tracks I liked but I admire her for that first album at such a young age and her willingness to try things (I never liked Bowies music either but admired him too).

It was great in the days of 'Samplers'. Another good one was from Harvest Records, The Harvest Bag:

https://www.discogs.com/release/2022747 ... arvest-Bag

Here's a track I still love from that, The Grease Band - Laughed at the Judge:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFcxqZm3S9s

Harvest, Elektra, Deram, Vertigo, Island and other record labels have each put together a compilation of their histories, both music and some text. Expensive but pretty interesting. E.g.:

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=9742

There are also books on people like Jac Holzman, founder of Elektra, and Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records.

Bit of a different slant an album I didn't realise how good it was Heathen by David Bowie.i was heavily into Bowie's 70s lps and bought a few of his later offerings but never really played them but for some reason I played Heathen last week while just pottering about the house and now can't stop playing it

I tried playing that nirvana song and got a bit bored, but it pulled up underneath an Irish priest singing hallelujah (a song) in somebodies wedding much to everybody's surprise and yielding a standing ovation.
I normally hate the happy clappy religious stuff, but that was surprisingly good. Can't post a link as I'm on the phone, sorry.

Just gone back to a couple old favourites this morning; David Sylvian - Gone to Earth and Japan - Quiet Life.

I like Stratosphere, and own about 20 Tangerine Dream albums but I really couldn't distinguish between them if my life depended on it. For favoured chill moments I tend to head towards Vangelis. Earth and the Bladerunner soundtrack are absolutely brilliant. Harold Budd has his moments too.

Not strictly stuff I'd 'forgotten' how good they were but I certainly didn't appreciate Pink Floyd and Talking Heads for a long time whereas now they're two of my favourite artists.

To try and fit the brief more accurately, I'd put forward Jarvis Cocker's debut solo album 'Jarvis'. Enjoyed it at the time but it ended up back on the shelf. Grabbed a copy on vinyl last year and Jarvis revealed himself to me allover again 🤣 In all seriousness, it's an absolute belter from one of the best and most enduring songwriters of our generation.

I love Graceland and everything it stands for.

I saw a documentary once that suggested it to be one of the early Hip Hop albums produced because of the cut and paste recording process. Struck me as a really unique take on that record.

John Martyns One World is a good chill out album. The song small hours on that album is arguably on of the first trip hop songs. Pulps We Love Life album has some good moments too.

Lucky enough to see him nearly a dozen times, sometimes so close I could see all his fingers on the fretboard, he was an absolute genius. I was also lucky enough to see Led Zep once at Alexandra Palace, Black Sabbath a few times, Uriah Heep countless times, Man and Stray, So many great bands and so great live. I saw Lynyrd Skynrd once in the Southend on sea Kurzaal as support to the atrocious Golden Earing. LS had the most amazing sound system.

Manchester band - Sad Cafe's debut album 'Fanx Ta Ra'.
