Burnley’s game at Arsenal tomorrow will be refereed by Jon Moss whose only previous Burnley game this season was the opening day home defeat against Swansea.

Sunderland man moss now lives in Horsforth in West Yorkshire and works even closer than that to Turf Moor as a schoolteacher in Todmorden.

He’s played his part in our recent ups and downs. In 2015 he wrongly sent off Michael Duff at West Ham and left us to battle for over half of the game with ten men. Although Duff won his appeal, the defeat that day on our last visit to the Boleyn Ground virtually condemned us to relegation.

On the same date a year later he was at Turf Moor as a Sam Vokes goal clinched promotion back to the Premier League. That was his 13th Burnley game and it was his earlier games that, generally, were the poorer, particularly those back in his native North East at Hartlepool in 2009 and at Middlesbrough a year later. There was also the shocking decision to send off Marvin Bartley at Nottingham Forest.

In that game against Swansea this season he missed the clear penalty for a foul on Michael Keane. It was 0-0 at the time so we might well have gone on to win the game had it been given.

Moss has refereed 20 games this season with only two of them in Football League games, both in League One, so he is now almost exclusively used in the Premier League where he first refereed over six years ago in a game between Wigan and Aston Villa.

In those 20 games this season there have been 82 yellow cards and two red cards. Of the yellow cards, 40 have gone to home team players and 42 to away team players. The first of the reds was Manchester City’s Nolito in their 4-0 win against Bournemouth; the second was on his last visit to Arsenal when he sent off Granit Xhaka although Arsenal beat Swansea 3-2.

There were no cards in his last game, this week’s FA Cup replay between Southampton and Norwich, the first time he’d had a card free game in over a year.

Jon Moss is 17th of 18 Premier League referees in RATE THE REF with a rating of 55.40 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Marc Perry (West Midlands) and Andy Halliday (North Yorkshire). The fourth official is Anthony Taylor (Wythenshawe) who has refereed us twice this season, at Leicester and the home game against Crystal Palace.
