Burnley’s home game against Manchester United tomorrow will be refereed by Jon Moss and it will be the first time he’s taken charge of a game at the Turf since the opening day of the 2016/17 season game against Swansea City.

It will be his 16th Burnley game but the only two since that Swansea game in August 2016 have both been on the road. He was in charge of the controversial 2-1 defeat at Arsenal in January 2017, the game that saw Dean Marney suffer the injury that ultimately ended his Burnley career, although he couldn’t be criticised for the missed offside from which Arsenal won the penalty that won the game for us.

More recently, he refereed our 1-0 win at Everton last season and had a good game that day but there have been some really poor games previously and that’s why you will find him next to bottom on RATE THE REF with a rating of just 58.03 out of 100 which includes a 14.42 for fitness and positioning, the lowest currently in the table.

Among the poor performances are certainly the defeats at Nottingham Forest in 2011 and at West Ham in 2015. He sent off Marvin Bartley in the first of those games and Michael Duff in the second; both were shockingly poor decisions.

This season he’s refereed four games to date. He was in charge of the Community Shield game at Wembley. There were no cards in that game but in two Premier League and one Championship game since he’s handed out 12 yellow cards, seven to home team players and five to away team players, and one red card which went to Pierre Hjbberg in Southampton’s 2-1 home defeat against Leicester a week ago. It was a second yellow for the player in a game that also saw Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand and Harry Maguire of Leicester yellow card.

Tomorrow his assistants are Harry Lennard and Andy Halliday. The fourth official is Michael Oliver whose last Burnley game was last season’s 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
