Chris Kavanagh is the newest recruit to the select group of referees and tomorrow he takes charge of a competitive game at Turf Moor for the first time although he did referee our pre-season friendly against Hannover 96 that was abandoned at half time due to crowd problems.

He replaced Mark Clattenburg in the top group during the summer having been allocated his first ever Premier League game at West Brom in April of this year. It hasn’t led to a regular place in the Premier League though and tomorrow will be just his third top flight game with him also having refereed the Brighton v West Brom game two weeks ago.

Kavanagh, from Manchester, has been refereeing in the Football League since 2014 where he kicked off in League Two with a game between Burton and Dagenham & Redbridge. He got his first Championship game in November, that between Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan, but he didn’t referee Burnley until January 2016 at Brentford.

On a night when Burnley played some outstanding football to lead 3-0 at half time, with the game ending 3-1, Kavanagh had an easy night in front of the television cameras with his performance earning him a RATE THE REF rating of 98.00 out of 100, a figure which, being his only Burnley game, sees him firmly at the top of the table.

This season he’s refereed four games, two in the Championship and one League Cup tie alongside his one game in the Premier League. Those four games have brought ten yellow cards with three going to home team players and seven to away team players.

In his last game there was just one card, for Nottingham Forest’s Jack Hobbs in their 5-1 defeat at Chelsea in this week’s League Cup tie.

Hopefully he’ll have as quiet a ninety minutes as he did at Brentford and hopefully Burnley will turn in another outstanding performance.

The assistant referees are Peter Kirkup (Northamptonshire) and Sian Massey-Ellis (West Midlands). The fourth official is Graham Scott (Oxfordshire) whose last Burnley game was our FA Cup defeat against Lincoln last season.
