Two former Burnley strikers are on the move having been released at the end of last season with Steven Fletcher (pictured) swapping Sunderland for Sheffield Wednesday and Marvin Sordell set to join Coventry City having been released by Colchester United.

Fletcher’s four year stay at Sunderland came to an end officially when he was not retained by manager Sam Allardyce in May, but he’d been at Marseille on loan during the second half of the season and hadn’t played in the Premier League Sunderland since Boxing Day when he lined up against Manchester City.

He leaves the Premier League having scored 53 goals in seven years for us, Wolves and Sunderland and he’s signed a four year contract with Wednesday.

Coventry are expected to confirm the signing of Sordell who left Burnley last August for Colchester. He scored four goals in 21 league appearances for Colchester but his season came to an abrupt end in January due to an ankle injury that required surgery.

Colchester were relegated to League Two and he was one of the players released at a club that is now under the management of John McGreal. He’s now agreed a deal to join Coventry with the signing expected to be announced soon.

One other Burnley player in the news this week is Richard Chaplow. Like Sordell, he was with a club relegated from League One last season, in his case Doncaster, and he’s triggered a release clause in his contract to enable him to find a new club.
