1516 burnley turf moor 04Should Burnley beat Sunderland next week in the replay, our opponents in the fourth round will be either Fleetwood Town or Bristol City and against either it will be a first for us.

We’ve never played a cup tie against either of the two clubs previously in any of the cup competitions so it will be a first no matter who gets through should we get that win against Sunderland.

Like us, Bristol City and Fleetwood played out a 0-0 draw on Saturday and they too will replay next week. Fleetwood, being in League One, had joined the competition in the first round and this is their fourth successive away tie. All three to date have ended in 0-0 draws, at Southport an Shrewsbury prior to Saturday’s at Ashton Gate. They won the two replays 4-1 against Southport and 3-2 against Shrewsbury.

It’s good news to have a home draw. Since beaten Burton in the fourth round at home in 2011 we’d had seven ties out of eight away from home, the only home tie comings against Tottenham two years ago, and that ended in a replay defeat at White Hart Lane.

The fourth round ties will be played between 27th and 30th January.
