rangers 1000x500It was a big of a shock on Friday when it was announced that our under-23 team would be heading to Scotland for a post-season friendly against Rangers at Ibrox.

With the announcement of the game three days ago, coach Michael Duff said: “It will be largely the squad we have next year that will go up there and we might look at a different shape to our play as we build for next season.”

When Duff named his team, it included both Mace Goodridge (Newcastle) and Josh Benson (Arsenal) in the starting line up whilst both Teddy Perkins (Leyton Orient), Rob Harker (Bury) and Anthony Glennon (Liverpool) all on the bench. We can only assume that, given the selection, we can expect those players to be signing for us ahead of next season and Up the Clarets understands, from a recent touchline discussion, that Perkins has already agreed to a two year deal.

We fell behind early in the game yesterday, played in front of an 800 crowd, through Stephen Kelly, but by half time we were in front and that after we twice came close to falling 2-0 down. After Kelly’s goal, they put an effort wide when they really should have scored and soon after James Clarke did really well to clear off the line.

But Harker, a player recommended to Burnley by former player Chris Brass, came on for the injured Tinashe Chakwana, got us level when he headed home a Benson cross and right on half time we took advantage when Tunde Bayode headed home from our long throw expert Jordan Cropper.

Rangers had one opportunity in the second half but generally it was Burnley who were on top with Harker getting his second when he finished a good move from close range.

The team was: Aidan Stone (Adam Bruce ht), Jordan Cropper, Oliver Younger (Teddy Perkins ht), Scott Wilson (Anthony Glennon 60), Ali Koiki, Christian N’Guessan, Tunde Bayode (Marley Blair 60), Mace Goodridge, Josh Benson (Oliver Younger 82), Tinashe Chakwana (Rob Harker 16).
