Nice friendly for Burnley
The first of our home pre-season friendlies is against French Ligue 1 club OGC Nice who have just ended the 2018/19 season in seventh place in the table.
To give them their official title, they are called Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice Côte d’Azur but are more commonly known as OGC Nice or just Nice. Formed in 1904, they were founder members of the first division in France and they’ve won the title four times and the Coupe de France on three occasions. All four league titles came during their hugely successful period in the 1950s as did two of their cup wins. Their most recent title is the 1997 Coupe de France.
During that 1950s period, they were managed for a time by Englishman William Berry who had previously played over 250 Football League games for clubs in the south of England. Berry was a manager for over 30 years in Europe but never managed an English club.
Their current manager is a French international but one known well to English football fans. Patrick Vieira took over last year having previously managed New York City.
It’s the second successive year we’ve included a pre-season game against a French club. A year ago we played Montpellier on the Sunday between the two Europa League games against Aberdeen. That game ended in a 0-0 draw.
The game against Nice will be played on Tuesday 30th July with a 7:45 p.m. kick off.Share this page :
