1617 burnley aiden oneill 01 1000Aiden O’Neill spent the 2018/19 season back in his native Australia, playing for Central Coast Mariners on loan. It was a successful season for the young midfielder who won all their player of the year awards but not for the club who finished bottom of the A League.

The Mariners were keen to see O’Neill, who scored four goals in 23 appearances for them last season, return for a second season but  the Australian press have reported that he will return to Australia but with his home town club Brisbane Roar who are now managed by former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Mariners have been gazumped by the Roar with several other Australian clubs keen to sign O’Neill although a number of them were put off by the loan fee Burnley asked.

O’Neill has been offered a new deal by the Clarets and the Herald have reported that he will sign that new deal and then move home again on loan.

Now aged 20, he made his Burnley debut almost three years ago when he came on as a substitute in the 2-0 home win against Liverpool. He made further substitute appearances at Chelsea and Southampton and started the League Cup game at Accrington.

He’s also played 36 times in the Football League while out on loan at Oldham and then Fleetwood. He scored just once in those games, that coming for Fleetwood at Ewood Park against Blackburn, not a bad place to score your first goal.
