Owls go nine points clear
At the beginning of November the two Sheffield clubs were level on points at the top of the northern group of the Professional Development League, but it’s Wednesday who have taken a big stride forward in the last month since they beat their local rivals.
Their lead at the top has now extended to nine points following their most recent win against Leeds two days ago. They won that game as United were losing again, this time to Forest, and that’s allowed Forest to get above them on goal difference while Barnsley have also moved level with them on points with a win against Hull last Friday.
As Burnley sat this week out, there was a chance we could fall further down the league, but that’s not been the case. Huddersfield, the closest to us were beaten at Birmingham, Leeds lost that game at Wednesday and Crewe, who were are now bottom, fell to a 5-2 defeat against Bolton which featured a second hat trick of the season for striker Connor Hall.
There is only three points between that bottom group of four teams and we could drop down the table in the next week with two of those below us having games and us missing out again as we play our Premier League Cup game at Swansea.
Things have tightened up at the top of the south group with leaders QPR beaten at home by second place Crystal Palace who are now just one point behind. Coventry missed the opportunity to go top when they were beaten at Colchester.
With a number of Premier League Cup games coming up, there are only four fixtures this coming week in the league. All four are in the north group and will be played next Monday.
