Palace take a play-off place in U23 League
Crystal Palace have become the first team to qualify for the end of season play-offs in the Professional Development League. They have a twelve point lead over both Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic in the south group.
Ipswich, theoretically, can catch Palace but Charlton, who have played a game more, can’t and that guarantees Palace a top two finish although in reality they are going to win the group by a big margin.
That second play-off place from the south group could still go to any number of teams and it might just be the same in the north group. Bolton and Sheffield Wednesday currently hold those top two positions but Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United, with games in hand, could still threaten Wednesday’s position in the top two.
Unfortunately, at the other end of the table, we weren’t able to close the gap on Barnsley on Good Friday. They lost 2-0 at Wednesday in the morning but we couldn’t pick up any points a couple of hours later when we were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield United at Stocksbridge.
That leaves us still four points behind Barnsley with a game in hand. We both play the much improved Crewe this week. Until recently they were down at the bottom but now have a say this week. They are facing Barnsley at home this afternoon and travel to the Turf on Friday. We then play our game in hand next Monday at Colchester where we will be hoping to avenge that Premier League Cup defeat that ultimately saw us fail to reach the last sixteen.
The player featured this week is goalkeeper Conor Mitchell.
