The youth team kicked off the week in third place in the U18 Professional Development League but Saturday’s postponement of the home game against Barnsley has seen us drop two places to fifth with both Sheffield United and new leaders Wigan Athletic moving ahead of us.

1920 burnley sam unwin 00 500x500We would have been behind Wigan in any case. They won against Ipswich last Tuesday to move ahead of us and then secured a big 5-0 win at Crewe on Saturday. They’ve played at least one game more than every other team in the northern group but now sit top with a one point lead over Nottingham Forest who were without a game on Saturday but also won an outstanding game last Tuesday.

With Sheffield Wednesday beaten, we would have moved above them with a win but we now await a new date for the fixture as we potentially drop further this weekend with us having no game in an otherwise full fixture list.

Barnsley will move ahead of us should they get at least a draw against Leeds while one of Hull and Birmingham will go above us unless their clash ends in a draw.

Watford still head the south group and extended their lead over the  weekend to three points. They won 1-0 at bottom of the league QPR but Charlton, who are in second place, could only draw against Millwall.

The result of the day came in the south group. The day started with both Crystal Palace and Coventry on six points with Palace ahead of them on goal difference yet having played a game more. It looked a tight game on paper but it was anything but with Palace recording a 7-0 away win.

The featured player this week is our newest recruit, wide player Sam Unwin. Sam, who spent time with both Blackburn and Manchester United but was with Bury until their removal from the Football League led to the closure of their academy.
